Oscar Noms - Surprises, Comments and Snubs

Well Guys, it's that time of year again. What do you guys think? Any surprises? Snubs you saw, or didn't see, coming. I know you guys love the movies - so spill it. Let the Academy have it with both "barrels."

The Snubs, for starters:

Tarantino - He got snubbed, that was a small surprise. The controversy surrounding his film made me think that this maybe was in the works. His film is nominated for Best Picture, but he's shutout.

Affleck - This one's a mystery. Argo nominated for Best Picture, lots of buzz, but he gets shutout. This, I thought, was a no-brainer. I have not seen the film, but everywhere you turn you hear how good this film is.

Bigelow - Same thing here. The buzz for Zero Dark Thirty is off the chain, Chastain is awesome, it is a contemporary topic. Yet, the director of The Hurt Locker is shutout as well. Curious! By the way, ZD30 is nominated for Best Picture - weird, isn't it?

Zero Dark Thirty, Argo and DJango Unchained are all nominated for Best Picture, but none of the directors are nominated. Go figure! As a side note: Amour is nominated for both Best Foreign Language Picture and Best Picture.

Tom Hooper - Director of Les Miz. From what I've read and heard, he uses an inordinate amount of close-ups in his film. Critics were not impressed with his filmmaking style choice, and I believe that's why he was excluded from the Best Director nominations (he won for the King's Speech).

Comments:

Best Actor: 2 horse race

It's between Hugh Jackman (Les Miz) and Daniel Day Lewis (Lincoln). Bradley Cooper was actually very good in Silver Lining Playbook, but he's up against 2 powerhouse performances in powerhouse movies. They may swing back toward the epic movies, as Silver Lining was kind of an Indie film.

Best Supporting Actor:

Alan Arkin in "Argo"
Robert De Niro in "Silver Linings Playbook"
Philip Seymour Hoffman in "The Master"
Tommy Lee Jones in "Lincoln"
Christoph Waltz in "Django Unchained"

This one's a toss up, any of these actors could walk away with an Oscar and it wouldn't be a bad thing. All are good, solid actors in good, solid movies and all have won before. If I had to pick, my money's on the sentimental vote: either Alan Arkin or Tommy Lee Jones. Ok, so I didn't pick one.

Best Actress:

Jessica Chastain in "Zero Dark Thirty"
Jennifer Lawrence in "Silver Linings Playbook"
Emmanuelle Riva in "Amour"
Quvenzhané Wallis in "Beasts of the Southern Wild"
Naomi Watts in "The Impossible"

Another 2 horse Race: Chastain and Lawrence are both terrific actors in their own right. I haven't seen ZD30 yet, but I have seen Silver Lining and Jennifer Lawrence is amazing in it. But I wouldn't bet against Chastain. I think she's great (she was the mother in The Tree of Life, she was also very good in The Help).
I'm picking Lawrence because I'm in love with her. I know, good way to pick....lol.

But...........and I say this cautiously, don't be surprised if Emmanuelle Riva wins for AmouR.

Best Supporting Actress:

Amy Adams in "The Master"
Sally Field in "Lincoln"
Anne Hathaway in "Les Misérables"
Helen Hunt in "The Sessions"
Jacki Weaver in "Silver Linings Playbook"

Amy Adams is solid in The Master, but the movie suffered greatly at the box office, plus all indications is that it was a confusing, slow movie. Sally Filed and Helen Hunt are both solid in their respective movies, and Jacki Weaver was fantastic in her role..........but, Anne Hathaway is a revelation in Les Miz as Fantine (at least it's all the buzz). I plan on seeing Les Miz soon.

Best Director:

"Amour" Michael Haneke
"Beasts of the Southern Wild" Benh Zeitlin
"Life of Pi" Ang Lee
"Lincoln" Steven Spielberg
"Silver Linings Playbook" David O. Russell

First, I think the list is incomplete. Affleck, Bigelow and Tarantino should be included regardless of "politics." Life of Pi is beautifully shot, but the story had some minor flaws. I have not seen "Beasts" "Amour" or "Lincoln" But from this list:

Will Win - Steven Spielberg (I haven't seen Lincoln yet)
Should Win - David O. Russell (I did see SLP, and it was great)

I'm leaving the Best Picture list for another thread, because of the number of films, both on and off the list. But please let me know what you think about the Oscar Noms. This should be fun!!!

I don't think Hugh Jackman will win it, response to him as Jean Val Jean was too split, whereas response to Daniel Day Lewis was consistent across the board.

Anne Hathaway as Fantine was surprisingly good. Her solo song and the scene around it is very raw and well done.

I always look at these award ceremonies a little bit sideways. Certain movies are always overrepresented in all categories. And it always kinda seems like there's politics involved, plus it seems strange to give awards for art. I guess it's not too different from how we give scientists awards for their breakthroughs and humanitarians awards for their works, but it also seems like science and humanitarianism are things that have enduring impacts on real life. Art wants to do the same, but do any of these movies really stay with a person?

Ive yet to see it, but a lot of the feedback Ive heard on Zero Dark 30 has been mediocre. Many comparing it to a bland episode of 24...

Django is the only best pic nominee Ive seen so far. I liked it a lot, but Im not prepared to declare it best by default, so Ill need to see some of the others first.

Can't say I'm disappointed by the QT snub. I thought that movie was pretty much destroyed by a one dimentional, thoroughly underwhelming third act. The worst of QT on display there: childish, bloody to the point of exhaustion and utterly morally vapid.

Yeah, Affleck got robbed. And since it will be so obvious by the end of the day, he'll be a shoo-in for winning Best Director for whatever he does next. lol

I'm kind of appalled and not surprised for a second that folks have been politicizing ZD30 so relentlessly. The very possibility, however remote or trumped up, that the movie could be sympathetic to torture has scared sooooo many people away. It sucks when people decide to not even see a movie "on principle." Condemning art sight-unseen is pretty indeffensible.

Which brings me to the Cloud Atlas shut out. Depressing. The editing on that movie, alone, was masterful and the editing on that movie was clearly EXTREMELY challenging.

I think regardless of who wins the big awards the big, big winner of this year is Silver Linings Playbook and David O. Russell. With all these noms, EVERYONE is gonna have seen this movie before it's done. And it's good.

Best Actor is prolly gonna go to DDL, but, seriously, though his performance was flawless, the movie was shockingly lazy at times. Sally Field really needs no more nominations from the Academy. She always plays the same tormented nut-case. Sorry.

Naomi Watts was devastating in The Impossible. But yeah, I think it'll either go to Chastain to throw ZD30 a bone or it will go to Lawrence to make up for her having not gotten it for Winter's Bone.

It would please me greatly if Helen Hunt got BSA for "The Sessions" but it's looking like Hathaway will indeed be walking away with that one.

It's weird, when we get to best Director, I kinda don't care. Spielberg prolly did some of his weakest work in years on Lincoln. The movie seemed really to get away from him at times. But then I've yet to see Amour or Beast, so maybe I'd be more engaged if I had.

Best Picture? Whatevs. I'll be fine as long as it's not Lincoln, so...I'll prolly not be fine.

Hey Bytemite,

You may be right about Jackman, there's been some backlash to Hooper's choices in filming extreme close ups. Funny how politics comes into play for, as you correctly state, artistic endeavors. Still though, I enjoy watching the various clips and tributes throughout the show (yes, I'm an Oscar geek!).

As far as movies "staying" with us: Few movies inspire me. Kubrick's 2001 Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange. Others I celebrate because they entertain to such a level that they become a part of my imagination - The Matrix, original Star Wars, Firefly/Serenity. Others are a joy to watch - Wizard of Oz, Mr. Roberts, Casablanca. I know I'm missing a few, but you get my meaning.

I think Jackman's still got a solid chance. Lewis already has a couple wins under his belt, and Jackman is extraordinarily well liked in Hollywood. That good will could push him through.
