Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

...a few days ago made me wonder. Speaking of "trolls", it was suggested that the NRA's ad about Obama's children fills the bill of just that; putting out something outrageous enough to piss thinking people off and get attention, and nothing more. Several examples were given, like the "woman's body rejects rape" thing, supposedly as a way to get attention. Also as a way to speak to the fringe and please them that the rest of the populace (or just the "libruls") gets all pissed off...something Rush Limbaugh has made perfectly clear they adore.

I'm not sure how valid it is--in some cases, no doubt, it's quite on point. Quoting Pokemon in a presidential election seems to come under just such a category; especially given it was obvious later that his candidacy was never serious to begin with. But I find it hard to believe that the NRA would just be doing what they're doing to "troll", and I think some of the others actually believe the insanity they spout. So I'm kind of on the fence.

For those who are obscure, it makes sense to me, given the basis that "any attention is better than none", and I can think of quite a few who fit that bill--Palin probably at the top of the list. But for others...

Whaddya think?

Huh. I may be wrong about the NRA...Magons put up an article which included
Quote:

"They get support when people are mad and stirred up. They want the attention. They're not interested in fixing things. They want to stir things up, and the more they stir things up, the more members they get and the more money they make. What do they gain by compromising? Nothing."

That seems to put their recent ad, and much of what they've said publicly, square in the arena of "trolling". Hmmmm...

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Much of their money comes not from membership fees, but from manufacturers, so anything that gins up gun sales HELPS the National Trifle Association. They're not in the rights business; they're in the sales business, and they have a lobbying arm aimed at increasing sales at all costs, be they monetary or human.

We know all that, Mike, but does it increase their membership to troll something like that about the President's children? Actually, thinking about it, it probably does. They lose nothing by alienating thinking people who see it, but for everyone who buys their idiocy, there's a chance they'll go out and buy a gun, if for no other reason than to say " YOU!" to the "thing" that pisses them off (the thought that Obama's kids get protection while others don't). Hmmmm...

So maybe there's more purpose to trolling in that case than just getting attention and firing up the minority that agrees with them... Although, wouldn't the minority that agrees with them ALREADY own guns? It's a conundrum.

S'what we call demagoguery, Niki.
And hell yes is the NRA guilty of it, and it's one of the reasons I dislike them, the other being they no longer truely care about rights so much as holding bigger and better fundraisers to get the money out of you, to hold bigger and better fundraisers....

A vicious cycle which happens to any organisation which grows beyond monkeysphere range, I do believe, thus taking on a life of its own without any moral guidance and losing its initial purpose.

That said, SOMEWHERE in there, SOMEONE has made the decision to pull shit like this, and feels they can get away with it by diffusing the responsibility across many so they don't feel the guilt (or they're just a dick) and probably won't be held responsible.

But they are, cause it's why folk like me do not support them.
To them it ain't about the rights, it's about the money, and so long as that is true they cannot be trusted, and of course they'll stoop to any measure of rabble-rousing and fearmongering to get it.

That's a generalization with which I STRONGLY disagree. It's certainly true for some, no question about it, but definitely not for all. I can cite examples, if you like.

"Get away with it"?? Shit, when you look around at just the lies people are getting away with these days, not to mention the incredible statements many have made, there's no question of getting away with anything...it's a time when literally ANYTHING goes, and sad as hell to see...

I assume we're talking about the advert which basically says "Pres. Obama's kids get all this protection, why don't our kids?". While this point is worth thinking on, making a commercial about it is a bit lacking in tact, they could have said it in a more general sense instead of using the girls specifically.
