Georgia man guns down immigrant after GPS sends him to wrong driveway

Quote:

A 69-year-old war veteran and former missionary was arrested over the weekend on the suspicion of killing a 22-year-old Cuban immigrant who mistakenly arrived in his driveway because of faulty GPS directions.

Gwinnett County jail records obtained by The Atlanta Journal Constitution indicated that Phillip Walker Sailors was charged on Sunday with the murder of Rodrigo Abad Diaz.

Friends who were in the car with Diaz told WSB-TV that they were trying to pick up a friend on the way to ice skating on Saturday but their GPS directed them to the wrong address. The friends said that they waited in the driveway for a few minutes before Sailors emerged from the house and fired a gun into the air.

Gandy Cardenas, who was in the car, recalled to WAGA that the homeowner made no effort to speak to the group before opening fire.

“He didn’t talk to them, he just started shooting,” Cardenas explained. “The first shot was in the air.”

At that point, Diaz tried to turn the car around to leave, but Sailors fired another shot, striking the immigrant on the left side of the head. The group, which included a 15 and an 18 year old, said that Sailors held them at gunpoint until police arrived.

This is exactly the kind of "responsible gun owner" and "law abiding citizen" the NRA wants to have more guns.

Well, at least he was arrested for murder?

The problem here, to me, seems less that he had a gun but that he apparrently felt justified in shooting someone just because they were on his property, although the article doesn't go into detail about what exactly motivated him.

Yup, one more responsible gun owner strikes a blow for...what, exactly? He most likely WILL get away with it, because they WERE on his property, eh?

The NRA and ALEC have done a wonderful job of empowering people who are bent that way in the first place to feel justified in being violent. Their "stand your ground" law has gone a long ways toward that, may they rot in hell.

This is American Mentality at its worst, our Wild West Attitude gone out of control. I wonder if he feels ANY remourse?

It may not BE about the gun specifically, but if he didn't have one, how do you think he'd have acted? Hollered at them to get off his property? He could hardly run at them with a knife or anything else; people who behave like that have a tendency to feel less powerful when they're facing multiple occupants of a car than if they have a gun and can behave however they want from a distance, I would presume...

Gawd, that poor man's family, my heart breaks for them...for something so innocent, he died. How they must be suffering.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

That's absolutely awful, I mean, what if the person was coming to visit or something? Crap people are dumb.

On another note, I think that you guys would benefit from coming up with titles that are more ... substantive. I can't wait until the title "Another one" or other things to that affect falls out of fashion, because you guys are cleverer than that and you know it. I suspect that some people don't even click on it because its so repetative as titles go. Oh well, up to you.

Riona, you're entitled to your opinion, of course. But do you actually believe that if we changed the titles to something more "imaginative", like "ex-soldier kills man who pulls up in his driveway" that anyone who doesn't click on the threads now would click on them THEN? If so, think a minute; the pro-gun folk are most likely to skim right past "another one", knowing what it'll be about, as they are to skim psst the longer title, since they know what THAT will be about, too.

Yes, it is up to me/anyone else doing the same. In my case, I choose those titles because eventually someone might notice how many of them there are in a short time, and start thinking about it. They're not going away; it's not a "fashion", it's a deadly serious issue, and I'll be posting them probably for the rest of the time I'm here.

I've stayed quiet far too long because I felt any attempt to bring it to people's attention was futile--as you said in the other post, we're so used to it, we pay it little attention. Now it's something people are talking about all over the country, so maybe there's hope. Who knows? But I've made my reasons for posting these stories clear in the other thread, and I'll go right on doing it, whether it bothers you or anyone else. It IS up to me, just as whatever anyone here puts up is up to THEM.

It totally doesn't bother me that you post these stories, they are news and thus worth talking about, hearing about and thinking about. the monotonous thing is you and Quicko's titles. I sort of grudgingly click on "another one", but I would more interestedly click on "Idiot shoots guy in wrong driveway" or "15 year old shoots family". Maybe I'm a sensationalist, I just think you and Quicko are smart and creative people with clever brains.
