The United States will deploy additional ground-based missile interceptors on the West Coast as part of efforts to enhance the nation's ability to defend itself from attack by North Korea, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced Friday.

Still relatively new in his post, the Pentagon chief told reporters that 14 additional interceptors to be installed by 2017 would bring the total to 44. It is part of a package of steps expected to cost $1 billion, officials said.

"The reason that we are doing what we are doing and the reason we are advancing our program here for homeland security is to not take any chances, is to stay ahead of the threat and to assure any contingency," Hagel said.

Friday's move came after North Korea recently threatened a pre-emptive nuclear attack on South Korea and the United States in response to stepped-up U.N. Security Council sanctions over its latest nuclear test last month.

In December, North Korea successfully launched a long-range rocket for the first time under what the United States and other Western nations say was the guise of putting a satellite into orbit.

Moreover, Pentagon officials said they became concerned about a mobile missile spotted in a parade last April. The KN-08 missile can be moved around the country and hidden, making it harder to detect compared to a missile on a launch pad.

"We believe the KN-08 does have the range to reach the United States," said Adm. James Winnefeld.

North Korea also said last week it was nullifying the joint declaration on the de-nuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. One of the country's top generals, according to published reports, claims Pyongyang has nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles that are ready to be fired.

While Hagel said the steps he announced were aimed at addressing the threat from North Korea and Iran, the focus was clearly on the potential for North Korea to some day follow through on its belligerent rhetoric. More at http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/15/us/north-korea-missile-defense/index.htm

Hey, wait a minute...if I remember right, Saddam never SAID they were going after us, nor did anybody in Afghanistan. Since N. Korea is SAYING they're gonna bomb us, does that mean we get to start another "pre-emptive war"? Everyone ready to go to war again? Get out those assault weapons, gun bunnies, maybe you'll get to fight someone other than your own countrymen...wouldn't that be FUN?!?

Saw this over on CNN.com about the first thing when I got internet back. CNN is my home page. Last I heard the N Koreans didn't have anything with enough range to reach the USA. The map on CNN was not much help- I couldn't get it to enlarge. But it's a LONG reach even to Hawaii or Alaska, let alone the Continental 48. Much different level of threat of course, to our buddies, allies and commercial partners in S Korea, Taiwan or Japan.

Aparrently, the Pentagon guy thinks they might have-- but the 5 sided paranoid factory has exaggerated an enemy's capacity often before, sometimes out of conservative estimation, sometimes out of paranoia, sometimes with political and budgetary motives.

If the Conservatives and R's start beating this drum, that will clarify the motivation. If Cheney, a Bush, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft or Gingrich starts in on this, it will be crystal clear. Hey, it worked for Iraq, didn't it?

Remember the fable about the boy who cried wolf.

Oh, c'mon - it's a ploy so the Pentagon gets moved to the front of the trough and the defense pigs get to spend more money.

North Korea is about as big a threat to this country as Iraq was in 2003.

Well, that's about how I figure it, too, myself. But then again, maybe the Pentagon, or CIA or somebody who studies and keeps track of that stuff knows something more about their capability than I do.

'Course, I thought the CIA and Colin Powell knew more about Iraq's WMD capability than I did, in 2003. And I thought that they wouldn't LIE about something that important.

So I guess I've grown some.

Ditto NewOld, with the exception that I never doubted politicians/congressmen/senators/presidents/CIA or any of the rest would lie through their teeth if it was in their interest. Iraq was just the most recent reaffirmation of my belief, for me. Which is why I asked the questions I did. Think we'll be that stupid again, this soon?

HERO

I note for the record that we can't start a premptive war with North Korea because the last war is STILL going on. Last week little Kim, the dictator, not the singer, cancelled the ceasefire. Not sure yet why we're not bombing them already.

found this over on CNN.com:
"Seoul, South Korea (CNN) -- A new North Korean propaganda video shows images of what appears to be an imagined missile attack on U.S. government buildings in Washington, including the White House and the Capitol.

The roughly 4-minute video was posted Monday on the YouTube channel of the North Korean government website Uriminzokkiri.

It carries a montage of clips of different weapons, including artillery guns firing and large missiles on display at military parades.

Just before the three-minute mark, it cuts to footage of the White House in an electronic sight's crosshairs, and then a simulated explosion of the Capitol's dome.

At the same time, the voice narrating the video says, "The White House has been captured in the view of our long-range missile, and the capital of war is within the range of our atomic bomb."

Analysts say that North Korea is still years away from being able to target nuclear missiles at the United States."

Certainly hope the NoK government and military aren't watching their own propaganda, and aren't DUMB enough to believe it. Taking out Washington DC, like taking out the World Trade Center or Pearl Harbor, would not cause the collapse of the American government or military. Tragic losses, yes. Embarassment, yes. Shock, yes.

But nowhere near enough to defeat America, just enough to piss off everybody here, and unify the nation. SAC would still be intact in Omaha, and whatever chain of command that remained , there or elsewhere , would be savage.

Meh, they're blatantly trolling us cause they know we will do more social, economic and political harm to ourselves freaking out about having our alleged supremecy challenged than they could EVER do to us themselves.

Like a drunken homeowner trying to kill a fly with a flamethrower and a shotgun, we're out own worst enemy most days, and our so-called-protectors are in fact the gravest enemy our whole nation and society has ever faced.
