America loves a winner!

She had more than enough built in excuses to just quit, and not even try. Or to just do the bare minimum, and let someone else decide for her how to live her life.

Naw, that wasn't what she had in mind.

Homeless Girl Overcomes Odds to Be Named High School Valedictorian

Homework was never easy for Chelesa Fearce — mostly because she didn’t have a home to do it in.

Chelesa was recently named valedictorian at Charles Drew High School in Clayton County, Georgia, even though she was homeless for most of her high school career and was forced to spend some nights sleeping in her mother’s car.

No matter how tough times got, Fearce always remained optimistic:

“I just told myself to keep working, because the future will not be like this anymore. You’re worried about your home life and then worried at school. Worry about being a little hungry sometimes, go hungry sometimes. You just have to deal with is. You eat what you can, when you can.”

Chelesa, who also scored a 1900 on the SATs, excelled in the classroom, earning a stellar 4.466 GPA. As if that’s not impressive enough, she took college courses for the last two years of school, meaning she’ll already be a junior when she begins Spelman College later this year.

Way to go, Chelesa, and best of luck.

Really?

Not 1 comment on this story ?

I guess since it goes against the ' Julia' meme of so many on this board, who are convinced that only BIG GOVT can solve life's problems for us, that when someone goes out and does something so positive, despite so many hurdles, it's best to ignore it,and pretend it doesn't exist.

What do I get out of this article: America grinds down huge chunks of its population under abysmally unfair and destructive circumstances. A rare few are far too bright and talented to be ground down.

You like it b/c it's an example of social Darwinism at work -and you say hooray for social Darwinism. And the rest can presumably eat cake.

Your distortion of reality is indeed fascinating.

What we have here, clearly, is a story of self determination and hard work, resulting in success.

Kiki...posting into the wind again. Just thought I should remind you.

Rap isn't going to pay any attention the LARGER, very real and horrible facts of life in America today, nor the millions who are beaten down by the system, nor ANYTHING other than the fact that one person beat the odds; if you remark on anything aside from that, you're in for abuse, dismissal, being told you're "pissed" because she achieved success (just think about the pretzel logic it took to get THERE!), etc. And of course, because you brought up the uglier truths, that makes you someone he's "against", ergo you must be a liberal. You know all this; why even acknowledge his snarks?

As for the person in question, gawd bless her and I'm thrilled for her success. It in no way changes the fact that she represents one of the MINISCULE FEW who will ever even get a decent CHANCE to succeed in our current society, how much harder it is for even those who USED to have a decent chance to succeed these days, or that those two facts are really, really important.

Giving Rap's "neener, neener" infantile idiocy about "you're pissed", etc., any attention at all is beneath any intelligent person here. There are far more interesting things here for us to pay attention to.

Stories like this are what people like AURaptor use to justify not giving a shit about poor people. It feeds their fantasy that poor people remain poor because they're weak, and rich people become and remain rich because they are superior human beings. It's the core myth of their religion of greed.

One guy who rises from the gutter to become a king of industry is proof that the American dream is alive and well and there's nothing that needs to be changed. It's amazing. Luck, good and bad, doesn't exist for these people. And the idea that few rise to the top BECAUSE so many are trapped below NEVER occurs to them.

Y'know, there's this great tv show that was on about 10 years ago now, it really exposed this delusion for what it is. It was this crazy space cowboy sci-fi show nobody watched about people who'd been fucked over by the system and never caught a break despite their obvious gifts. It vividly showed how the wealth of the few is absolutely dependent on the poverty of the many. If only people like AURaptor could have seen it...

Where in this thread, in the quotes you posted, did I EVER refer to you as a generic 'liberal' ?? Oh, that's right. I never did.

And for a 2nd time, you tossed out a red herring, w/ the pretense that SHE was the one who you insulted, when I never once indicated any such thing.

You and I both know you insulted ME, or tried to, for absolutely zero reason, what so ever.

But you are pissed off that she represents the very thing you say can't happen. Individuals succeeding w/ out the help of BIG GOVT, and actually, in spite of it.

Many would call her a 'sell out', an oreo, for trying to work hard and 'be white', instead of following the herd and just accept being what The Great Society wants her to be.

Also, apparently my posts about the extremely destructive circumstances she lived under - circumstances MANY Americans live under - which I backed up with facts, is beyond your ability to identify as the reason for me being pissed off, or address in any way.

True. I can't relate living like that, with barely 1 meal a day, and succeeding to the level she's already achieved. Which is what I find so remarkable about her. The focus, the will , the drive to not just get by, but to absolutely kick ass. I think everyone should take note, even myself.

Who the frak cares about wealth or success ? That should be defined by the individual, not by some arbitrary, collective mind set. Whether it's having a roof over your head, not being in debt, and being able to provide for your family, or it's a house in the Hamptons, hell...that's up to you.

Main thing is... stay off the public dole, don't rely on hand outs to live your life, and you'll be fine. Hell, this idea that , if you're not in the top 0.001%, you're a worthless parasite is stuff the collectivists shovel. That ain't me.

You did say people will be fine if they just follow your silly little fantasy. Right here "Hard work pays off" and here "... stay off the public dole, don't rely on hand outs to live your life, AND YOU'LL BE FINE."

You, by your statements, wrote off the world's fatally poor as being a failure to follow your dictum. By YOUR logic, one or more of three things explains the pictures I posted:

(1) they are not working hard

(2) they are on the dole

(3) they are fine.

Since they are obviously working hard (1) is false. Since I posted pictures from countries that don't have 'the dole', (2) is false. That leaves (3) they are fine. And since they are fine, you are fine with it.

Unless of course you admit that hard will doesn’t always pay off, not even in sheer survival.

If not, well, we already know where you stand.

little kirk thingy

That's why I didn't post US POVERTY rates, I posted homelessness rates, hunger rates, and bankruptcy rates.

Please learn how to read. You'll find your life will go so much better.

"As many as 3.5 million people experience homelessness in a given year (1% of the entire U.S. population or 10% of its poor) ..." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homelessness_in_the_United_States

"More than 15% of Americans go hungry" http://www.marketplace.org/topics/business/maps-food-stamps/more-15-am ericans-go-hungr

"In that year, one out of every 55 households filed for bankruptcy." http://www.debt.org/bankruptcy/statistics/

Another article about her points out that there were times when she and her mother lived in shelters.

Nowhere do any of the sources claim that they ever got ZERO help from "the govt."

This school she's graduating from with honors - one assumes from the stories and from Rappy's constant bleating about how she never got any help from "the public dole" that it cannot in any way be a public school or any school that takes any tax money, right?

And it will be really embarrassing for Rappy if it turns out that she stayed in a publicly-funded taxpayer-paid homeless shelter, won't it?

Aw, dang... Looks like much if not all of her education was "on the public dole"...

Meanwhile, Kirk seems to be arguing that one cannot be truly poor if one still has possessions. So if you have a car to sleep in, for example, then you aren't REALLY homeless, it seems. If you own a house, you can't be in poverty. Or if you own a refrigerator, even though you can't keep it stocked with food or keep the power on.

Homelessness in the US is a very temporary thing for all but those that choose it as a lifestyle. Most of the statistics on homelessness I've seen include those in temporary shelters. In my work I run into homeless camps sometimes and most I've spoken with are homeless by choice. They go to the homeless shelters and food kitchens for a shower and food, but drugs and alcohol are not allowed so they need to live outdoors to continue their destructive lifestyle. Others are mentally ill and the courts in the US prevent authorities from helping them unless the are a danger to themselves or others. Homelessness is a problem in the US but unless we are willing to incarcerate the mentally ill and force the drug addicted into treatment there's little hope of doing anything about the permanent homeless population.

This is exactly what I was going to point out. The RapMoron has again brought up an example that shows the opposite of what he hopes it proves.

This girl has able to pull herself up because the government's education system gave her the opportunity to do so.

1) How can it be possible that a teenager is even forced to BE homeless at all? It seems insane. Is there no safety net for child homelessness?

Absolutely fantastic for her that she had the drive and aptitude to achieve what she did. Hats off to her. But that story probably stands out for a very good reason. That level of material insecurity (she speaks about going literally HUNGRY?) can and does wreak havoc on people's ability to even envision a good future, let alone give them the wherewithal to achieve it.

Being gifted with high intelligence certainly helps, as does proper guidance and motivation, which I assume she MUST have received from parents and teachers alike.

I think her mother (whatever nature her financial difficulties may stem from) deserves a lot of credit for instilling that sort of positive focus in her daughter. I wonder about the details, what her parental background is, education-wise, whether she had to work parallel to her schoolwork, and so on.

Kirkules

"The National Center on Family Homelessness estimates that the true number of homeless children in the U.S. is closer to 1.6 million."
"As many as 3.5 million people experience homelessness in a given year ..."

That makes children nearly half of the homeless (47%) in the country.

So, which of YOUR little of homilies do these CHILDREN fall under? Homeless as a lifestyle choice? Homeless due to choosing drugs and alcohol over shelter rules? Homeless due to mental illness?

You are seriously out of touch with reality.

"More than one million students in this country are homeless.

The number of homeless children is actually much higher. The U.S. Department of Education, which released the one million figure this June, included only “children enrolled in U.S. public preschools and kindergarten through 12th grade for the 2010-2011 school year,” according to the Orlando Sentinel. As the Sentinel points out, that excludes “infants, toddlers, preschool-aged children who aren’t enrolled in public programs and homeless children who are home-schooled.” It also excludes homeless teenagers who are not enrolled in school. The National Center on Family Homelessness estimates that the true number of homeless children in the U.S. is closer to 1.6 million"

Homeless children in the US would fall into the very temporarily homeless group. Homeless children are a result of the fact that most Americans live pay check to pay check by choice. People earning 100 thousand dollars a year could be homeless in a month because they choose to buy the new BMW rather than save for a rainy day. The family unit as a first fall back for people in hard times has been destroyed by out of wedlock births and government dependency. The same people who cry about the homeless children are the biggest supporters or the lifestyle choices that cause it.

Edit: Thanks Kwicko for pointing out my obvious error, anyone but you could understand what I meant by context.

As for the person in question, gawd bless her and I'm thrilled for her success.

They do love that word, "hate", don't they? The ugliness on the right is pervasive; gotta hate, hate, hate, ascribe "hate" to others, and call people names, whether it has anything to do with reality or not. Not a SINGLE person here "hates" that this woman is succeeding. Any attempt to point out that this is not the norm, that many, many people who work just as hard as her will never get half as far, or that any public safety net HELPED her survive and succeed, will be seen as us expressing "hatred", rather than us nothing that there is a very real problem in this country with both poverty and homelessness, and decrying that more people don't have the chance to succeed as she does OR that so very many have to struggle and suffer just to get by.

Pretty much says it all, in my opinion. And I don't "hate" anyone, least of all this courageous person. It's not about "hate", much as you guys like to say it is; it's about the realities in our country and that we SEE them.

It's impossible to even respond to Kirk; the things he writes are so horribly outside reality, so I won't even bother.

Definition of 'temporary'? How about 'VERY temporary'? Of 'homeless'? Facts? Cites? References?

Just as an aside:
Quote:

Main thing is... stay off the public dole, don't rely on hand outs to live your life, and you'll be fine.

Quote:

The lib/occutards just hate a good success story that doesn't involve a Govt. handout.
Quote:

But you are pissed off that she represents the very thing you say can't happen. Individuals succeeding w/ out the help of BIG GOVT, and actually, in spite of it.

So let's look at this. If she got NO "big govt handout", then she got none of the following:

Now, beyond that, you KNOW she didn't stay at a shelter which was made possible by any government grant, didn't attend a public school (oops: "Charles Drew High School"), that her mother never got any financial assistance, food stamps, unemployment or housing assistance ("The girls' proud mother, Reenita Shephard, told WSBTV that the family occasionally had an apartment but when she was laid off from her job they ended up back in a shelter"), or ANY OTHER government assistance, right? You can prove that? Otherwise, you will be forced to admit that government assistance, government safety nets contributed to her being able to succeed, ALONG WITH her determination and hard work.

Oh, and obviously they only stayed in a shelter "temporarily" ("homeless for most of her high school career"), and she would be one of those "non-poor-poor" Kirk highlighted, because "I studied by the light of a cellphone when the shelter lights went off". Cellphone, imagine that, how disgusting! So they don't even count as truly "poor" by your standards.

We might also note that her older sister (also Chelsea...must get confusing in that family!) graduated from a different school as salutatorian and will attend West Georgia University. The first Chelsea will be attending Spelman College in the fall. I wonder if they'll get any government grants to put them through college?

The entire argument--because it sure ain't a debate--is absurd. Of COURSE these children, and others--in fact, virtually all of us--received some form of help at one time or another from the government, even if you just count public transit and public education. It's what America is ABOUT, and the consistent attempt to belittle it is unAmerican and disgusting.

This family is to be applauded, mightily, for overcoming what millions of people in America deal with every single day. That doesn't mean they got there with no help, or, more importantly, that millions more wouldn't get there, perhaps without suffering as they have, if America was living up to it's founding principles.

ETA: Kiki, c'mon, "most Americans live pay check to pay check by choice"--you actually feel it's worth your while to RESPOND to this guy???

I agree that homelessness is a problem in the US,I see it every day were I live. The problem is that many of the homeless are homeless by choice and those that are not are sometimes not educated enough to get the help they need to dig their way out. Homelessness in the US is the result of a lack of education, not a lack of compassion buy the US population. You simply can not help those unwilling to help themselves. I'm all for helping those that can't help themselves, but that is not what we are dealing with in the majority of cases I see. When the US government gets involved in the name of helping the homeless what results is the rewarding of bad behavior.
