"Even liberal columnist Maureen Dowd commented: "The defense secretary at the time, Leon Panetta, insisted, 'We quickly responded.' But they responded that they would not respond." Dowd sums it up: "All the factions wove their own mythologies at the expense of our deepest national mythology: that if there is anything, no matter how unlikely or difficult, that we can do to try to save the lives of Americans who have volunteered for dangerous assignments, we must do it."

They could have been saved. Someone just decided to let them all die. Someday we'll find out who and why.

When has that ever been a national priority? We could have saved the lives of more than four thousand American servicemembers by not invading Iraq, and the choice was made to let them all die. More died in Afghanistan, purely by choice, when they could have been saved by NOT doing anything unlikely or difficult, simply by NOT starting yet another war of choice. More than 58,000 could have been saved by not starting a war in Vietnam, but the choice was made that trying to save American lives that way would have been less profitable to American corporations.

As long as there is profit in war, America will never know lasting peace. That's your choice, and that's what you've chosen.

That's Maureen Dowd, the renowned liberal columnist for the NY Times you quoted, not me. Your Bush obsession is still hilarious. And I like how you just conveniently forget that Democrat presidents got America into WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.

As for the topic, absolutely the US military could have done something, That's not even debatable.

I'm just a bit surprised that Paneta would blatantly say something so ridiculous. Democrat or not, he's earned some level of credibility. Or he HAD, until this.

No more.

Nope, that's Maureen Dowd that YOU quoted. I've never read her, but she sounds like an idiot. The NYT has a history of hiring morons, it seems. They have a habit of working at Fox when no rational person will buy their bullshit any longer.

By the way, nowhere in your article does Dowd say that the military could have saved anyone at the consulate. Neither does anyone else quoted in the article.

Your Obama Derangement Syndrome is making you hallucinate; you seem to be reading things that aren't there.

Exactly. Nowhere in the article does ANYBODY in the U.S. military say what Jongsie claims in the title.

Republicans just can't help but make shit up when it comes to this kind of stuff.

*EVERY*thing?

OK - then you should have no problem finding where the military said "we could have saved Ambassador Stevens", just like the title claims - "U.S. Military: We Could Have Saved Ambassador Stevens".

So go find it.

Not in the linked article, you didn't.

Did you find it in your ass while your head was up there for a look around? That's where you generally find your "facts", after all.

Yes, that way you don't even have to deal with the message that isn't in the article Jongsie linked to.
