Democratic Rep. Ed Markey Tuesday won a special U.S. Senate election in Massachusetts, topping Republican businessman and former Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez in an election marked by low voter turnout.

The contest was the second time in three years that Massachusetts voters headed to the polls in a special U.S. Senate election with national implications.

In January 2010, little-known Republican state Sen. Scott Brown upset Martha Coakley, the Commonwealth's Democratic attorney general, in a contest to fill the remainder of the term of longtime Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy, who died the previous summer. Brown's victory set the stage for the GOP wave in the November 2010 midterm elections.

Fast forward three years, and this time there was no upset.

With 100% of precincts reporting, Markey led Gomez 55%-45%, according to local media reports.

Markey, who had led in all the pre-election public opinion polls, will serve the remaining year and a half of the term of longtime Democratic Sen. John Kerry, who stepped down earlier this year after being confirmed as U.S. secretary of state.

Brown, who lost his Senate seat last November when he was defeated by Democrat Elizabeth Warren, passed on running in this special election, setting the stage for Gomez, who had never held public office.

While the GOP looked to comparisons to the 2010 special election and Gomez aides predicted a shocker, much has changed since Brown's upset victory.

Markey will succeed William "Mo" Cowan. Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick appointed his former chief of staff to serve as interim senator after Kerry stepped down.

If he wants to stay in the Senate past next year, Markey will need to run for re-election in November 2014, when a full six-year term will be at stake. Gomez has hinted that he'll run again, and minutes after the election was called, some national Republicans already had their eyes on a rematch. I voted for (Republican presidential nominee) John McCain.” - Gabriel Gomez.

Per Opensecrets.org, Markey had never spent more than around $1.2 million on a race before and averaged around $1.5 million in contributions. For this race, he raised $7.8 million and spent $8.6 milion.

Per the Christian Science Monitor, Gomez raised $1.7 million. he has no listing on Opensecrets. http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Elections/Senate/2013/0626/Edward-Markey-

Niki,
Some things stand out to me.

Low voter turnout is generally considered a bad sign for repeat results. It indicates that most people don't care, and only peeved people have bothered to show up. I think polls aren't terribly indicative in this circumstance, where opinions are free, until you have to bother to show up at the polls. And it looks like repubicans treated this as a dry run and not a serious race. So Markey got himself the job. Now he has to do something to pass the probationary period with the voters.

Someone should tell that to the Koch brothers. Oh, wait - they already tried that. Oh well - maybe Karl Rove can still try. Again.

Kiki: Excellent analysis, and I quoted that last paragraph specifically because we'll have to wait and see in 2014, obviously.

Remarks about how much money was spent and that it allowed anyone to "buy" the election are nothing but pathetic sour grapes, considering the GLUT of money Republicans have spent on various elections. Everyone always tries to "buy" the election; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. That the Democrats thought this one was worth putting money into and that Markey was able to get that much in contributions, and that the Republicans obviously DID NOT think it was worth investing in and Gomez did NOT get a lot of contributions, means nothing, except that Geezer is desperate for some kind of snark. It's a really poor one.

How much $ did the GOP spend on THIS election ?

* Markey spent $5.4 million on his campaign between April 11 and June 5, while Gomez spent just $1.6 million.

What it all comes down to is this. When it's Romney or the Koch brothers, it's evil, and a travesty in US politics. But when it's George Soros, or the array of Unions, THAT is democracy!

I'm thinking of a very bad word to say now, but won't use it.

I'll simply say - HYPOCRITE !

Outspent the GOP candidate by over 3x's, in a stronghold for the Democratic party.

So, what are the qualifiers which do and don't make a campaign 'bought and paid for ' ?

Democrats can't 'buy' campaigns. Only Republicans can.

Fahgedaboudit, Nick, you're arguing with a stone. "Dog with a bone" and all that; you KNOW Rap will never give up any idea that crawled into his brain and lodged there.

Of COURSE elections are "bought" by both sides from time to time--when it works. And of course if the Republicans had sunk tons of money into this one and won he'd be crowing about it and not bothered by the money at all. It's just how his mind works; no logic will ever interfere in the process, so why try?

It certainly seems that you hold such a standard. I can't help but notice that you've not uttered a word about your own governor's money troubles, the federal investigation into them, or the pending grand jury.

I guess when it's a Republican governorship that's being bought, you're totally okay with that.

So do you think it's wrong for Romney or the Koch brothers to spend money on an election in an attempt to win it?

And do you think it's wrong for a Democrat to play by the same rules?

"Hypocrite" sounds like exactly the word that applies to you. You're whining now about Markey doing something you were in favor of when Romney and the Kochs were doing it.

Are you saying now that corporations *aren't* people and *shouldn't* have free speech rights? Or should those only apply when they support Republicans?
