Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Just one more illustration of how a gun in the home for "self-defense" can be lethal:
Quote:

William Owens, 11, of Jarvisville, West Virginia, was lying in bed when he received a single gunshot wound to his chest. Just prior to the shooting, Owens' grandmother, Tina Owens, 57, of Jarvisville and Owens' father heard what they thought to be intruders tampering with their properties outside.

Tina Owens went outside to investigate, taking along a .40 caliber pistol and fired multiple shots to scare away the intruders. One of the shots went astray, said Sheriff Marano, traveling into the house wall and hitting William Owens in the chest. William later died from his injuries.

Tina Owens' home and William Owens' homes are about 200 ft. apart, said Marano. http://www.wboy.com/story/22728815/update-9-year-old-boy-shot-and-kill

How many people who have guns in their homes for self-defense think about the danger of firing shots to scare away intruders? Or even where the bullets might go if they are defending themselves? Not many, I'll warrant. Certainly not this grandmother, and now a child is dead and two families are mourning.

The prosecutor thought it was worth paying attention to:
Quote:

Update: Harrison County Prosecuting Attorney Joe Shaffer issued the following statement Tuesday: "I will present the case to the upcoming term of the Harrison County Grand Jury for their consideration of whether any criminal charges would be appropriate. The reason I'm doing that is because the shooting victim is a family member, but you also have the issue of responsible gun ownership. It's a good case for members of the community to decide if charges will be appropriate in this case."

Joe Biden endorsed it.

Yes, with a shot gun, not a pistol.

So she fired a warning shot in the direction of a house? That's a special kind of irresponsible and stupid.

What a terrible tragedy.

Not that randomly firing into the air is generally recommended. Apparently people die or suffer from being hit by falling bullets quite regularly. Warning shots go... in the ground? Is there a recommended procedure there? Are they (credibly) recommended at all?

The ground would work, but as I understand it most jurisdictions a warning shot translates to "was actually trying to shoot them, but missed."

DEVERSE

Hey, Ive been in a firefight before! Well, I was in a fire. Actually, I was fired from a fry-cook opportunity.

If telling the person you are armed and will defend yourself with deadly force does not cause them to stop and think, then what does missing them when you shoot tell them? You are a terribly bad shot and thus it is pretty safe to attack you because you couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn door at 5 feet?

The bullet must land somewhere. To say you will fire into some object to “control” the bullet is just a stupid thought. Bullets break, bounce off/ricochet and pass through things they hit. If you think you have control of a bullet once it is fired from your gun, then you are an idiot and need your gun taken away before you hurt someone who doesn't deserve to be hurt.

If you don’t shoot to kill the person, then obviously you were not in any danger and not acting in self-defense. You should be charged with gross stupidity and sentenced to death because there is no worse crime than being stupid, especially when it involves guns.

Warning shot.... sounds like something a terrified dimwit would say as an alibi for killing an innocent person.

With stars to fill my dream;
I am a traveler of both time and space;
To be where I have been

And that's all this is to you... a political pinata.

Yes. Guns are lethal. That's nothing new. In fact, that's kinda the point.
