Madame and I are going on a road trip sans computer, so unless I find one somewhere, I'll be out of touch for a while.

Remember.

Abuse is bad, M'kay? It is identified by intent, not just a list of yes/no actions. A simple checklist approach leads to zero-tolerence policies like those that get elementary school students expelled for nibbling their toaster pastry into the shape of a gun.

Libertarians want the maximum freedom for everyone, as long as no one initiates the use of force.

If human-made greenhouse gas emissions are causing global warming/climate change/climate shift, then it's inevitable - unless China, and to a lesser extent India, get on board in a big way to reduce emissions. Since I do not see this happening, I suggest preparing for climate change instead of a probably futile and expensive effort to control it.

As to what you said, obviously there's overkill/oversensitivity possible with any kind of abuse, we see that every day.

Is there anything wrong with trying to mitigate the problem, maybe allow a few more million people not to suffer as much, put off "the inevitable" longer so maybe science can help out (or we can get smarter?).

Just some observations from the road.

Sure are a lot of potential organ donors out there. In pretty much every state that doesn't have a motorcycle helmet law, most of the folks you see on Harleys and Harley-type bikes are riding bareheaded (sportbike riders generally have brainbuckets on). I appreciate their consideration in case I ever need a liver or heart, but I wish they'd lose a little weight and keep their organs in better shape until they're harvested.

From Virginia through Iowa (driven mostly off the I-States), there seemed to be a dead raccoon every ten or fifteen miles. Don't know if this is raccoon suicide season or mating season or what, but they're dying in droves. Much more than squirrels, deer, and other critters.

Avoiding eating at chains and asking locals about places for good local grub continues to pay off.

The Crazy Horse Monument near Custer, S.D. continues to advance. It's being done completely without government money or assistance, and mostly by one family. plans include a Native American university and cultural center. It makes Mount Rushmore look tiny. Check it out on line.

Madame Geezer and I spent a couple of days fishing Rapid Creek below the Pactola Lake dam in S.D. Tough catch-and-release area with wily trout. Madame caught a 22" Brown, and I got a 20" Brown and a 16" Rainbow. Many more hooked and lost. Big fun.

On the live critter list, so far we've seen deer (whitetail & mule), antelope, buffalo (often in the road), big-horn sheep, ground squirrels, prairie dogs, wild turkey, wild burro, river otter, rattlesnake, and post-Sturgis bikers.

Still got a week or more to play, and may spend a few in Wyoming.

Per dead raccoons and other critters, I'm wondering if evolution will ever kick in to the point where they develop some sort of aversion to asphalt or some such. Probably not.

Home again with a few more observations.

The internet, and specifically eBay, have killed antique stores (and "Antiques Roadshow" has helped). Used to be that you could find good stuff in even the most backwoods store, including silver, crystal, nice furniture and good usable old tools. Now pretty much all that's left is books, 40's and 50's glassware and ceramics, plastic chotchkies, Star Wars action figures (not in the original package) and old clothes. Everything worth anything at all is out on eBay, where you can't really look at it before you buy it, and returning stuff not up to advertised spec is a pain. Even some of the high class stores we used to visit don't seem to have as much good stuff, or have gone to on-line sales only.

There are a whole lot of heavy folks out there. And they often don't dress very well.

Speaking fo getting heavy, the only thing better than the Bison Filet at the State Game Lodge in Custer State Park in South Dakota may be the Rack of Elk. The chef, quite rightly, refuses to cook either one more than 'medium', and will try to talk you out of that.

If you're in Louisville, Ky. and want a drink, go to the Haymarket Whiskey Bar at 331 E. Market St. 75 bourbons and Matt will suggest one for you. Also can get a Miller Lite, and live music four nights a week. A dive, in the best sense. And stay at the Brown Hotel, home of the Hot Brown sandwich. If you eat in their English Grille, get the Chocolate Striptease for dessert. Their bar is nice, although prices are somewhat higher (100%) than Haymarket.

In a bit more than two weeks on the road, we were rousted from out beds twice by fire alarms, both false. This seems to happen to us quite a bit on the road, and I wonder if it's that common, or if we just attract false alarms. The only time we really needed a warning, in Kingman, Az. several years ago, we sat in the bar at the Holiday Inn and watched the wind blow whitecaps on the pool with no alert at all. Next morning, we emerged to find the roof of the motel next door sitting in their parking lot.

Interstate highways are good for covering lots of ground in a hurry, but U.S. Highways and State routes get you around almost as well, and you can see a lot more. Stop at local museums in little (5000 or less population) towns and get the little old lady there (it's almost always a little old lady) talking. You'll find out who did what when, why things were better back when, and the best place to have lunch. Also stop at wineries and distilleries when you can. Free samples are usually worth it.

Pretty much everywhere we go, folks treat us nice and are willing to share a favorite scenic view, back road, fishing spot, or restaurant. We're rarely disappointed. I'd suggest that if you travel, turn down that side road when you see a sign for the local natural bridge, or city museum, or geographic center of the United States, or largest ball of string, or whatever.

Lots of places we used to visit were in high rent areas, and I guess the dealers wanted to get out from under the overhead of keeping a brick-and-mortar presence when they could just use a computer and a camera to display their goods. Also gave them more time to browse estate sales etc. for more stock.
