Throughout history, governments have twisted science to suit a political agenda. Global warming is no different, according to Dr. Richard Lindzen of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

“Global climate alarmism has been costly to society, and it has the potential to be vastly more costly. It has also been damaging to science, as scientists adjust both data and even theory to accommodate politically correct positions,” writes Lindzen in the fall 2013 issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons.

According to Lindzen, scientists make essentially “meaningless” claims about certain phenomenon. Activists for certain causes take up claims made by scientists and politicians respond to the alarmism spread by activists by doling out more research funding. — creating an “Iron Triangle” of poor incentives.

Gotta love it. 97% of scientists agree - rappy thinks its a scam. 1 guy says whayt he *wants* to believe, and it's FACT, you hear, FAAAAACT!

Lets keep in mind, this is the same guy who says the levels of ice in Antarctica and Greenland have not changed (they have, very demonstrably).

Never change, rappy. You're the perfect poster child for the idiocy of the right.

That's technically accurate.

Regionally there has been broad changes, as well as from year to year and monthly records, but globally and over long term, the rate of change, the temperature trend, has leveled out.

And in the southern hemisphere, you don't see the nice hockey-stick graph. Only the northern hemisphere. But even the northern hemisphere has shown a sort of leveling off. It's possible this is because the oceans have become a big heat sink and are acting as a buffer to further surface temperature change. Or it's a result of a two-hit combo from el Nino and la Nina according to NASA. But leveling off is indisputable.

Not to say it can't still be serious, but this is an example of me agreeing with AURaptor - don't dismiss something just because it doesn't fit the projections. Alarmist approaches to global warming hurts both public perception and loses credibility for science. Science must ALWAYS be objective.

At the same time, don't dismiss something just because it's inconvenient either.

Well, I'm not sure what planet this guy lives on, but he says “A surprisingly large number of people seem to have concluded that all that gives meaning to their lives is the belief that they are saving the planet by paying attention to their carbon footprint.”

I don't know any of those people; all the people I know who are trying to minimize their carbon footprint are doing it because it's the ONLY thing we can personally do, little as we know its effect will be, and/or because it's just the RIGHT thing to do, and we can only be responsible for ourselves. Many, if not most, of us have given up hope of changing anything on the global scale, we just keep trying to inform people, be responsible for ourselves, and hope for the best. The LAST thing any of us believe is that we're "saving the planet"--how stupid does he think we ARE? Or how uninformed and stupid is HE??

Daily Caller:
Quote:

The Daily Caller is a news and opinion website based in Washington, D.C., United States. Founded by Tucker Carlson, a libertarian conservative political pundit, and Neil Patel, former adviser to former Vice President Dick Cheney. The Guardian referred to The Daily Caller as "the conservative answer to The Huffington Post".[4] An article in The Washingtonian commented that in comparison to The Huffington Post, "The Caller puts more emphasis on its own reporting, whereas HuffPo is happy to feature someone else’s story".

Opinion contributors have included Newt Gingrich and Andrew Breitbart.

In an article titled "Women: Sen. Bob Menendez paid us for sex in the Dominican Republic",[16] The Daily Caller reported that New Jersey senator Bob Menendez had allegedly paid two prostitutes to have sex with him during a stay at a Dominican Republic resort. The report included videotaped interviews with the women. The allegation came five days before the 2012 New Jersey senate election. News organizations such as the New York Times, ABC News and the New York Post declined to publish the allegations, viewing them as unsubstantiated and lacking credibility.[17][18][19]

The FBI investigated the allegations and found no evidence to substantiate them.[20][21] Subsequently, one of the women who accused Menendez stated that she had been paid to falsely implicate the senator, whom she had never met.[17][21] Menendez's office described the allegations as "manufactured" by a right-wing blog as a politically motivated smear.[22] On March 18, police in the Dominican Republic announced that three women had acknowledged they had been paid $300–425 each to lie about having had sex with Menendez.[23]

According to a spokesperson in the Dominican government, the women in question had been paid to make the false claims in question by someone who identified himself as a Daily Caller employee. The Daily Caller issued a statement denying the claims. Wiki

As for Dr. Lintzen, he has long opposed the scientific consensus on global climate change. As to what his fellow scientists think of him,
Quote:

The April 30, 2012 New York Times article included the comments of several other experts. Christopher S. Bretherton, an atmospheric researcher at the University of Washington, said Lindzen is "feeding upon an audience that wants to hear a certain message, and wants to hear it put forth by people with enough scientific reputation that it can be sustained for a while, even if it’s wrong science. I don’t think it’s intellectually honest at all." Kerry A. Emanuel, another M.I.T. scientist, said of Lindzen's views "Even if there were no political implications, it just seems deeply unprofessional and irresponsible to look at this and say, ‘We’re sure it’s not a problem.’ It’s a special kind of risk, because it’s a risk to the collective civilization."[61]

A 1996 New York Times article included the comments of several other experts. Jerry Mahlman, director of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, did not accept Lindzen's assessment of the science, and said that Lindzen had "sacrificed his luminosity by taking a stand that most of us feel is scientifically unsound." The November 10, 2004 online version of Reason magazine reported that Lindzen is "willing to take bets that global average temperatures in 20 years will in fact be lower than they are now."[62] Lindzen has been characterized as a contrarian, in relation to climate change and other issues.[63][64][65] Lindzen's graduate students describe him as "fiercely intelligent, with a deep contrarian streak.".... "at gatherings of climate change skeptics ... Dr. Lindzen has been treated as a star", but that in the view of "the scientific majority ... he has gone beyond any reasonable reading of the evidence to provide a dangerous alibi for inaction.

According to an April 30, 2012 New York Times article,[61] "Dr. Lindzen accepts the elementary tenets of climate science. He agrees that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, calling people who dispute that point "nutty." He agrees that the level of it is rising because of human activity and that this should warm the climate." However, he believes that decreasing tropical cirrus clouds in a warmer world will allow more longwave radiation to escape the atmosphere, counteracting the warming.[61] Lindzen first published this "iris" theory in 2001,[7] and offered more support in a 2009 paper,[46] but today "most mainstream researchers consider Dr. Lindzen’s theory discredited" according to the Times article.[61] Dr. Lindzen acknowledged that the 2009 paper contained "some stupid mistakes" in his handling of the satellite data. "It was just embarrassing," he said in the Times interview. "The technical details of satellite measurements are really sort of grotesque."["

I don't think I find either the author or the source particularly convincing. Per that last paragraph, even he admitted his "iris" theory was screwed up, so what's his latest theory for what will reverse the effect of what he agrees is rising greenhouse gas--the denial of which he calls "nutty", I wonder? Obviously Rap and his ilk are precisely the audience Lindzen is aiming for, per the underlined, but I prefer dealing with reality, rather than what I want to hear. His statement that "If I’m right, we’ll have saved money. If I’m wrong, we’ll know it in 50 years and can do something" leaves me flabbergasted.

Poor Dr Lindzen. Nobody wants to follow HIS religion!

So I read the article, and what I found was...

Quote:

Throughout history, governments have twisted science to suit a political agenda. Global warming is no different, according to Dr. Richard Lindzen of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Opinion.

Quote:

“Global climate alarmism has been costly to society, and it has the potential to be vastly more costly. It has also been damaging to science, as scientists adjust both data and even theory to accommodate politically correct positions,” writes Lindzen in the fall 2013 issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons.
More opinion.

Scanning more quickly for even one nugget of verifiable information ...
Quote:

scientists make essentially “meaningless” claims...

compares global warming to past politicized scientific movements: the eugenics movement in the early 20th Century and Lysenkoism in the Soviet Union under Stalin.... goes even beyond what these past movements in terms of twisting science....

*Flips page*

Quote:

“Global Warming has become a religion,” writes Lindzen.
Even more opinion

Quote:

“A surprisingly large number of people seem to have concluded that all that gives meaning to their lives is the belief that they are saving the planet by paying attention to their carbon footprint.”
Not even talking about climate anymore...

Quote:

“There may be a growing realization that this may not add all that much meaning to one’s life, but, outside the pages of the Wall Street Journal, this has not been widely promulgated, and people with no other source of meaning will defend their religion with jihadist zeal,” he added.
Downright strawmanning

Quote:

However, there has been no rise in global temperatures for the past 15 years.

AHA!

Quote:

[T]he cracks in the scientific claims for catastrophic warming are, I think, becoming much harder for the supporters to defend,
SUCH AS?

Quote:

“Environmental advocates are responding by making increasingly extreme claims,”
WHO?
Quote:

Lindzen writes. “Politicians are recognizing that these claims are implausible, and are backing away from both the issue and support for climate science. The incentive is then for scientists to look elsewhere for support. Regardless of whether this will be sufficient, one can only hope that some path will emerge that will end the present irrational obsession with climate and carbon footprints.”

Wow, for a scientist, this guy sure makes a religious pitch. I was hoping for some substance... maybe a restrospective about ice cores, or a re-analysis of ice melting, or a new insight into how to measure geologic temperatures more accurately.

But, nah. Only one single verifiable observation in the whole article, which wasn't even true...

To be fair, it really does depend on how you parse the data. 2012 was ONE OF the hottest years on record, but that's still relative to the years around it, which have been also pretty hot, but not necessarily hotter than 2012, and it's been that way since 1998.

I mean, even in your own link:

Quote:

While global average surface temperatures have not increased much during the past decade, Karl said natural variability in the climate system, such as a spate of La Niña events in the Pacific Ocean, have helped influence temperature trends on such short timescales. “When we look at the records, the prevalence of La Niñas since 2000 have contributed to colder ocean temperatures, and obviously that affects the atmosphere as well, and our global temperature numbers,” Karl said.

He said that during the decade ending in 2012, global temperatures decreased slightly, after warming during the previous decade. “There is considerable variability” in decadal trends, Karl said, cautioning against reading too much into them. The longer-term trends over 30 to 50 years all show a significant increase in global average surface temperatures, he said.

^That's what is fact and indisputable.

But yeah, the article was mostly opinion. And various things could account for this leveling off and so the leveling off does not itself necessarily discount the theory.

It's still hotter than it's ever been, but it hasn't been getting hotter for a decade. It could still get hotter, or something might be happening that is poorly understood which provides a natural buffer to all this. I'm keeping my options and the projections open - climate and weather can be tricky. And I also prefer to assume there is a problem, but I like solutions that are voluntary that benefit people for other reasons, they're simple to implement, and still useful no matter what ends up being right or wrong.

This professor claims that AGW is a "religion", it's a fairy tale.

Okay, if you want to prove a fairy tale, then bring out the facts: Where is the narrative wrong? Is it in the current data? The models? The geologic evidence? Is there something wrong with CO2 infrared absorptivity? That is the nature of fact- something that mpre than one person can point to and measure.

But no such discussion ensued. It was all blah blah and then more BLAH BLAH BLAH. Maybe the guy is correct in his opinion, but there is no way to track his thinking and verify it. Yeah, I know... too much work, too much thinking, eh rappy?

Whenever people begin to argue about Climate Change I always remember something I heard George Carlin, the comedian, say to his audience in one of his stand-up concerts:

The world does not need saving because it's been around for millions of years. The world is going to look "climate change" in the eye and not bat an eyelash, it's people who will disappear long before the world ends. So, it's not saving the planet, but saving our asses that we should be worried about.

As he put it, the world has survived meteors, ice ages, prehistoric animals and violent storms (including 40 days of flooding) and it's still spinning on it's axis. Funny but true.
