Ted Cruz actually has a constituency that continues to support his policies (or lack thereof) and tactics. This does not bode well for cooperation in government in the near term. Leaders need to lead.

On This Week, ABC's Bryon Pitts talks with Tea Party supporters in Ohio on the shutdown. The people in the video snippet seem to be good people who love America. Listening to them shows what receiving a singular message can do to one’s psyche. They simply cannot see that Ted Cruz’s tactics are holding America hostage. By implication they are holding America hostage.

Polls show ( http://news.rutgers.edu/news-release/government-shutdown-blamed-gop-ne
w-rutgers-eagleton-poll-shows/20131016#.UmVad4nn_ct
) that Ted Cruz, the Tea Party, and Republicans are justifiably taking the brunt of the blame for the government shutdown. The financial cost of the shutdown was $24.1 Billion. 800,000 workers were furloughed. Not reported as much is the effect it had on the healthcare of children ("Every week that the National Institute of Health (NIH) goes unfunded, an estimated 200 patients, 30 of whom are children, will be denied treatment at the facility's Clinical Center. Of those 30 children, many have cancer, said NIH Director Francis Collins to The Wall Street Journal.", http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/02/government-shutdown-nih-kids-
cancer-treatment_n_4030016.html
) and on the hungry ( http://wcfcourier.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/bread-for-the-world
-president-hungry-hurt-most-by-government/article_dec255b1-a3e5-5aca-b2ed-afc556b65bf4.html
). Not reported as much is the incalculable damage it has done on scientific research ("It is not just that government researchers were locked out of their labs and offices, but whole programs were wastefully delayed and, in some cases, endangered", http://www.alternet.org/environment/government-shutdowns-incalculable-
damage-scientific-research
).
http://news.yahoo.com/video/week-talking-tea-party-161707198.html

In their discussion these issues never came up or were glossed over. In their reality the government shutdown was a good thing; fiscal responsibility by all means necessary, even if it means being fiscally irresponsible and inhumane. That, by inference, is holding America hostage.

This group, which is very representative of the Tea Party, believes a government’s budget can be treated like one’s personal budget. They believe the grassroots of America is with them. This delusion is similar to the delusion of the 2012 election when less than favorable polls were replaced by their belief in a newly created ‘un-skewed poll’.

The frustration the gentleman speaks about at the end is real to him. The frustration they all feel is real. The answer is to bring to light the real causes of their frustration. It is not Obamacare. It is not government spending. It is a sect of the body politic that has indoctrinated them to look away from the real problems of the country. In effect the frustration is of their own creation, which prevents the solving of the problems they are so rightfully frustrated about.

MOST of the economic impact was done by Obama, like trying to close a *PRIVATE restaurant in a park , as well as trying to shut off open malls and parks for citizens, while allowing illegals to hold large, organized rallies.

It truly is sad to see how our " press " so blindly accepts the signs of Obama's shut down as some matter-of-fact cause and effect of a shut down which they falsely blame on Cruz and the GOP.

The govt was funded, by the House. Reid and Obama chose to play partisan politics, by putting the gun to the head of the American public. Obama did this, unilaterally. It's completely on him.

No Conservative since Ronald Reagan has so riled and ruffled the old guardians of the Republican Party establishment, and at the same time sent Democrats into fits of rabid hysteria and unbridled panic.

And how can this be? For he IS the Kwisatz Haderach!

Oh, please. You suckers were singing that song over Sarah Palin, too. You mistake mockery for fear.

Liberal mockery is merely an arrogant attempt to conceal their true underlying fears. Since EVERY Conservative, whether White, Black, or Female gets mocked by liberals relentlessly and obssessively, the behavior can only be be interpreted as staggerring desperation to overcome paralyizing fear or severe mental illness or both. In your particular case it's clearly severe mental illness.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"Liberal mockery is merely an arrogant attempt to conceal their true underlying fears." So, when you all make snide comments about liberals, I'll just assume you have deep-seated fears.

Deal?

Ironically, when it comes to rabid HATRED (which is what our far-right wingers display hourly against our President and anything on "The Left", "the behavior can only be be (sic) interpreted as staggering (sic) desperation to overcome paralyizing (sic) fear or severe mental illness or both." It's well established that hate comes out of fear, so given how much hatred they espouse constantly, there can only be a ton of fear there, obviously.

Mockery, on the other hand, for me comes out of frustration. There is no way to communicate, no way to reach out toward compromise or understanding, so mockery is all that is left.

That's a pretty moronic thing to say, even for you.

The crazy conservatives get mocked - the vast majority we ignore almost entirely. But hey, if you can back up your claim that "every" single one is mocked here, please go for it (you can't of course, but I eagerly await your angry and inane attempt at a comeback).

You neglected to mention the fact that numerous conservatives have been held up respectfully here and/or agreed with, when they've done or said something we respect or admire...as in John McCain, for me personally. I've felt sorry for Boehner and others and applauded their efforts to deal with the insane Tea Partiers, as well, AND expressed respect for Chris Christie and others on some issues.

It's the idiots and insane extremists we mock, because all you can DO is mock them, you can't discuss them or disagree with them intelligently.

The conservatives that get mocked are the ones that have proven they can't grasp reality.

You know what's interesting? We MOCK; they HATE. I can't remember the last time I read anything a right winger here wrote that was FUNNY, mocking The Left of Obama or anything...THEY DON'T LAUGH. They hate, and they're dead serious about it, and their hate is visceral and ugly and needs vicious words and personal attacks. Interesting...
