Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker praises sex offender as part of state's 'improving economy'

Quote:Emphasizing his role as a job creator, Gov. Scott Walker praised Christopher Barber's moxie during the governor's annual "state of the state" speech. Barber, 32, left the ranks of the unemployed to land a seasonal job as welder at Ariens Co. in Brillion in late 2012, eventually turning that into a full-time post, according to a press release from Walker's office. Newspapers around the state ran a photo of Barber giving a big wave to the crowd as he exited the Assembly podium to a round of applause during Walker's televised address. "These are the faces of an improving economy in our state," Walker said Wednesday of Barber and others. "Wisconsin is going back to work." But there is a reason that Barber -- a resident of Two Rivers -- has had trouble finding steady work in the past. Records show that he is a registered sex offender with two felonies and three drunken-driving offenses. Because of his checkered past, Barber has been in and out of jail and prison for much of the past decade, with his probation having been revoked at least twice.

Scott Walker said Thursday he was frustrated that a registered sex offender and felon was allowed to stand alongside him during his State of the State speech. "Obviously, it's frustrating," Walker said when asked about the situation after a speech to the Wisconsin Grocers Association. Walker said he had assumed that the man's employer, Ariens Co. in Brillion, had done a background check when it actually had not. Ariens spokeswoman Ann Stilp issued a statement saying the company recommended Barber for the speech as an example of an employee who had been unemployed before coming to Ariens. Stilp said Ariens is now reviewing its hiring process. "There were thousands of other examples we could have used and that would have been preferred," he said of Barber. http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/govt-and-politics/scott-walker-upset-sex-offender-allowed-on-stage-with-him/article_4f74086a-8451-11e3-a0dc-0019bb2963f4.html

Quote:As for Bill Ayers, he absolutely is a criminal, and avoided being convicted because the FBI screwed up the investigation.

Quote: Think about this. You're defending a guy who WAS convicted, many times, and condemning one who wasn't, ever. And you're doing it on purely partisan grounds. How do you feel about Roman Polanski? Is he just like 3/4 of American males? Should he ever have been charged with anything?

Well, when it comes to rape and sexual assault, I'm probably not going to give you a lot of second chances on that one. I know conservatives don't really believe in "legitimate rape", and I can see you number yourself among them in that regard. Sexual assault? Hell, that's probably not even a real crime!
Quote:Hell, even Walker himself is admitting that it was a mistake. Funny how your knee-jerk conservatism won't even allow you to make that admission.

Quote:How many DUI convictions does someone need before you refuse them the privilege of driving? Your suggestion is to put him right back behind the wheel and see how it goes; I'm a bit more cautious, given his past behavior.

A registered sex offender, the 32-year-old has got a rap sheet going back to 1999 that includes a 2005 felony conviction for third-degree sexual assault involving a then-15-year-old girl. http://host.madison.com/news/local/columnists/chris-rickert/chris-rickert-no-need-for-scott-walker-to-be-embarrassed/article_0cf12b0b-3829-566a-af5f-e46170e87834.html#ixzz2rQddR1jK
