Quote: Sacrifices? What a joke. Even the kids from the rough neighborhoods who go into sports eventually just skate on scholarships then they get endorsements from corporations. It's like it's not even a real life, it's detached from reality. And it fades away in time.
Quote: So no, I don't respect them, I don't "appreciate" them, or their "sacrifices". Animosity it is, but baseless and ignorant it isn't. I see people trying to live up to other people's examples, living vicariously through them, instead of living their own lives and seeing their own worth and having confidence in themselves. I hate the celebrity worship, and I hate that it's over something so POINTLESS and MEANINGLESS.
Quote: If they deserve respect, it's only when they've done something with their time and money BESIDES BEING A CELEBRITY.

Quote:So, as long as they lose, and stay out of the limelight, it's ok with you ?

Climatically, it being further north than Boston makes pretty much no difference. The climate is mediterranean. Quote:Originally posted by 1kiki: People I know who are genuine athletes tell me that the differences in people at the top echelon are virtually zero. So immediate factors are weighted more heavily at any one event. If someone didn't sleep well the night before it could throw their entire effort. That means one-time winner take all competitions aren't really representative of true talent, but more of uncontrollable random factors.
Quote: So I think that a system that compares people over time is far more representative of who's better.
Quote: That said there's problems with ranking systems. It depends on what you think is the metric of greatness. Is it wins? Total points? Total time in the top 5? Over a lifetime? A year? Four? In any case, my disinterest in the Olympics remains. I don't find it meaningful.

I've come to dislike the Olympics. Besides draining countries of incomes and resources, there are far too many "sports" that aren't really "sports". Not to mention there isn't much to be gained in many of these actual sports because they are at the limits of what humans are capable of (ohh he finished a tenth of a second faster, wow). I agree they used to have a purpose, but where they WERE a uniting forces, I think they are more divisive than anything now and that that is going to get worse. Also, we have a little thing called the internet now, I don't think traveling to the other side of the world when you can compete just as well in the country you are from and compare scores just as easily on a computer makes sense. But then people generally don't to me....

They try to involve everyone else via a sense of nationalism and unity, but that sort of propaganda doesn't work on me. So the Olympics fail to pass the "why should I care?" test.
