I've been having this battle with people on the internets ('cause I LIKE futility) about pits. Knowing a couple gals that had their faces put back together by a surgeon, I have a problem with pits. Yeah, their cute fuzzy animals, yeah they are capable of being good protectors like any other breed. Unfortunately, there's a reason they look like HULK...and it's because they were BRED for that look. I firmly believe that you should have a special license to have a pit in this country (like people do with exotics), and with it special insurance, training required, and if it attacks someone NOT trying to kill you YOU get put in jail and license revoked.

Couple dozen people get mauled to death by dogs every year, and in my experience, most of those are kids. AND NO, It's not ALL about the owners. They are animals that don't have logic centers. They can be trained, but most of their actions are INSTINCT and that is impossible to remove all together...

Here's another article that talks about people being sooo emotionally attached they can't see the damage.

I think it's about probability. If there's a larger than normal chance your pet will chew someone's head off, then I think we should err on the side of caution, since people aren't capable of being unattached. And if you have little kids GET SOMETHING ELSE until the kids are big enough to at least fight back, I mean, why take the chance???

I'm with you.

They are called pit bulls, because they were bred to fight & kill.
They are good at it.
Most people who want to own a pit bull, I suspect, should not have
any dog. They want the big, bad one for a power-ego trip. Some
folks who own pits are way into dog fighting, legal or not.

Well darnit! I thought I'd published my own pit bull account in here,
but cannot track it down now. In brief, a 3-year-old child & 2 uncut,
male, pit bulls in front of my house. They came within a hair's breadth
of having a big-bad dog fight with the child right in the middle of it.
And both of these dogs I know to be good natured. One of them was
not trained; the bigger, older dog was trained, but not professionally.
i.e., To have these 2 dogs within 50 feet of each other was courting
trouble. They will fight!

The dogs are good in service.

I don't care to ban the breed. I'd carefully select who can own them,
more carefully than who's allowed to drive a car or own a gun. i.e.,
they should be a "controlled working stock."

Search for "Tahoe pit bull search rescue" & find:

Dakota is a pit bull who's famous in search & rescue lore. Why is
Dakota so good at what she does? Her owner says, "They never
get tired; they never give up."

It's a great dog in the right hands. So ... how to get them away
from all the grabby wrong hands?

ETA: I believe for the fatal statistic above, "pit bull" includes American

We have a good number of pit bull attacks here in the Metro D.C. area. Generally the dogs that do the attacking are ones that folks have trained for dog fighting or outright aggression but have not managed to control. Sadly, there are a lot of folks out there who figure that a vicious dog will add to their macho image, and so teach the dog to be aggressive.

I've read now that Mickey, the pit bull, killed another dog 9 months ago.
With no details on it, I'll assume he did it in his own backyard, not the
dog fight pit. It takes a little while for one dog to kill another; it's
very loud. ... It disturbs the peace.

I'm thinking people sometimes get a dog, any breed of dog, on impulse,
and then, when they discover that they are busy, the dog is ignored. It
gets food & shelter, but no socialization. Most dogs need to be social.
The dog may be confined, even chained up. Dogs need exercise.

Was Mickey abandoned in this way?

I think young adults are more prone to this error than mature people of ...
say 50 or 60. Get a pet on impulse, find out you're not a pet lover, fail
to find a new home for your unwanted pet ... the pet pays.

Pet Peeves:
Several visits to Animal Control in recent years, I always went thru the
kennel out of curiosity. What do they have the most of? Unwanted, adult
Chihuahuas and Pitbulls. If you have a chihuahua or a pitbull, please don't
breed them ... the market isn't as good as you might think.

Another problem pets have: Some owners don't even bother to take them
to Animal Control. They just abandon them: & oddly enough, most of them
stay in the cities; we have dog packs roaming the cities. Breeding. How
many cats can we find raiding the dumpsters behind restaurants at night?
Lots.

A dog is not a human being. It doesn't have human responsibilities or
human rights.

While we may hold humans responsible for the mauling of young Kevin, if
I'm the judge, Mickey is a dead dog.

We always had dogs as kid. I guess I didn't know them that well.
Used to have a bf who explained doggy psychology to me -- he
could see I didn't get it.
I guess I watched a whole season of Cesar Millan. So then, I was
starting to understand them, see?

But no. I don't understand the mutts.

I do understand that certain types of treatment will ruin a dog.
Apparently, this was not the problem with the two dogs here. I am
placing the canine race outside of my ken. I will assume nothing
about them from now on.

Dogs bite. I don't always know why = Can't trust 'em.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Part of the reason why put bulls make up so much of that stats is because pit pulls make up so much of the population. I had to go to the pound at one point to find my missing cat (he was eating over at a neighbor's house, apparently!) and wandered thru the dog section, and at least half were pits or pitbull mixes.

I guess guys get pitbulls for the same reason they buy big off-road vehicles, shave their heads and get tattoos- trying to look tough.

I had a dog once- a Sammy- who got a little dotty in her old age. It got to where she would bite at people, absolutely without warning; I seriously was thinking of walking her with a muzzle but just kept her way from ppl once I realized her behavior had changed. At the vet's office, people were backing away from the pitbulls and crowding MY dog; I had to pretty sharply warn them away because she just looked so sweet!

Anyway, all dogs have the capacity to bite, and the bigger and stronger they are the more damage they can do. Once a hunting/ fighting behavior is activated, you'll have trouble.

Too bad you can't track down those 44,000 idiots and have them re-educated. They're more dangerous than the dogs.

In my opinion, there are no "bad" dogs, only bad owners. I've met many, many, MANY pit bulls at dog parks, on the trail, etc., and never seen one attack anyone or anything; virtually every one was a rescue, per what Sig wrote. On the other hand, I've seen many dogs of other breeds attack other dogs and people. I'll leave it at that.

There is a reason every judge in this country will say DON'T OWN A PIT and it's because they snap so frequently. Many apartments will not allow them. Insurances are beginning to not cover them. Judge Judy has said it dozens of times and it's because they see the court cases over and over and over and over again. How many times does it have to happen before we as a species LEARN???

Annie was a small, tough pitbull, very sweet natured, seemed protective.
But she was "abandoned," with Kim, the gal next door dog-sitting, not
getting paid, kibble in short supply.

One day, Annie forced a hole thru the chicken wire fence. She didn't chase
the chickens but instead went to the their food dish and licked up the left-
over laying mash.

Another time, she caught a domestic rabbit that the neighborhood kids had
set free. Without hurting it at all, she brought it to Kim. This seemed more
odd to me than not killing-eating the chickens when she was so hungry.
Rabbits are game; they smell like game. Nearly any dog will kill a rabbit.

I think there are more than twice as many kill videos on this sight, 'cause
they are more sensational = popular. IRL, the pitbull saves events may be
more numerous.

I've never been around a pit bull, but there are more than a few news reports of attacks by them on children every year in Florida. It's always really horrible, and the dog's owner is usually a low-life psycho living in a house of filth.

We never trained our family dogs in my kidhood; just assumed they'd obey us.
So naive! A dog needs and deserves proper training.

Most dog attack fatalities are kids; I figure the next most is the elderly.

My in-laws believe training a dog is abusing it because it isn't natural behavior

Meanwhile, I've taught mine voice commands, hand signals, and it tells me when it needs to go out by shaking it's head yes, and licking his lips when he's hungry.

They are just like kids, if you want them to live with people they need to be trained how to deal with people...

I have a neighbor that only walks her dog in the summer and it has a PILE of shit by her door because she holds it out the door on a leash, and another that has never left it's yard enclosure in five years.

On second thought, maybe it's people we need to work harder on training

Now we're in full agreement, Wish...and "what Oonj said", too.

And yeah, I've had bad experiences with Akitas--in relationship to my own dog being "aggressed" by them. My last dog avoided Akitas quite noticeably whenever we ran into one...of course, she also had a permanent crush on every Weimerauner she ever met, so go figger...

And every dog I ever had was perfectly voice trained by me. I'd bicycle street, they'd run sidewalk, and they were letter perfect...until I got these two huskies, that is...sigh. Silly me, I thought I knew it all...huskies are great for teaching patience...

Akitas are another breed that only responsible people should have...in a perfect world...

I look at the dog's picture: he looks miserable, lonely & too thin.
It does not say if any action will be taken against Mickey's owner.

Part of my view is: Animal Control shelters have 1,000's of dogs that

Having a dog, just like having a gun, or any other potentially dangerous thing, requires responsibility on the part of the owner. Millions of folks who are responsible have dogs, guns, power tools, fast cars, motorcycles, etc. and no one ever gets hurt by them. Folks who are irresponsible can get you hurt with pretty much anything. It's really not the dogs, etc. that are the problem.

Did I post about my brother here the other day and it's gone, or did I somehow go to sleep before posting it and it's gone forever :(

In the end, it was a happy ending and it's so lucky he was so young when it happened. Aside from a scar on his forehead you would never know that he had over 400 stitches and more than a bakers dozen of staples on his head when he was 3 years old and a dog practically ate his face.

It wasn't a Pit, and it wasn't a mean dog. I don't know what the hell my 3 year old brother did to piss it off or make it think that he was dinner, but holy shit.....

I'm not a big Dog-guy, but it was one of those more Regal and athletic looking dogs. Think Alaskan Husky, but if it were warm and it only had 1/4 the fur. One of the friendliest dogs you'd ever meet.

It's amazing how well a 3 year old's skin can heal. If that happened to me now, I would spend the rest of my life as The Man Without A Face.

I really love my Brothers. We've been through so much shit. None of us are dead yet :)
