One thing I never understood....What is with the Chinese writing and the periodical chinese language used in the dialogue? Was there a time in the lore when the Chinese ruled over Earth or something?

The Alliance of Planets is also called the Anglo-Sino Alliance - that means China and America. I think the idea is that China and America are the worlds super powers, so it makes sense that in the future, they would have to work together to undertake such a huge mission as moving humanity to another solar system.

The effects of this alliance on the culture include the spoken and written Chinese in the show, as well as food (fresh bao, use of chopsticks, etc) and clothing, and the names of various planets and places.

Ah, I see! Makes sense. Although, I do not see the US mixing cultures like that. The western and Eastern governments are too controlling. Even if it meant saving the human race.

This was an act of desperation. Earth was dieing and they had no choice. Of course there are other cultures and nationalities, but the United States and China had the resources, so they are dominate.
