I've been wondering about this for a while, but haven't seen any good answers. What are the most common political trends amongst us browncoats? A simple sample from this forum would be fine, but if anyone has a more definitive answer like a study or research paper that would be great.

Note: Please don't get into an argument over what the show tells us to be. There are lots of interpretations and an argument would not be helpful.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I'm a frequent visitor to the site since early 2004. I learned quickly that the "Real World Discussion" forum was not a place I wanted to hang out, but it was apparent that the show had appealed to a very wide range of people with varying political thought, from very conservative to very liberal, and even an anarchist or two.

Personally, I consider myself to be moderate, although compared to most conservatives these days, or at least those whose opinions I hear the most, I would be very liberal.

Your post seems to be looking for generalities, so will address your request for "good answers".
Further sampling might be observed in RWED where the liberals shout the loudest.

Generally, fans of Sci-Fi have a technical bent, and a youthful bent. Those highly focused on Technical sometimes neglect their civic, government, or political segments of their education or interest. Thus they remain largely liberal.
Those who are more youthful, not mature, also have neglected or not yet exposed themselves to the civic or political portions of their education or experience. Likewise they remain liberal.
Those of a technical bent have a tendency to think logically, and therefore will eventually trend towards the right side of the spectrum as they become mature and more knowledgeable.

What seems most lacking among Firefly fandom is the mere gadfly, the flitting and fleeting follower of the current fad. The fans seem to really, really, really enjoy and revel in the characters, their interplay, their creation, backstory, and their stake. In terms of political trends, this seems to leave out the mostly disinterested or disenfranchised observers of politics. What remains can be quite fervent followers of specific political ideas, ideals, and concepts - which somewhat actually reflects their fervent following - perhaps obsessing - of Firefly, and all of the Verse that it entails.
Sometimes I view the more gadfly type as those who profess a love of Sci-Fi but downplay Firefly as not up to par with Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, etc. I personally would expect a more middling political stance from those types.

I hope that helps.
