Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said the attackers shot at random to overcome security checks at the international terminal of Ataturk airport. One blew himself up in the departures hall, a second in arrivals, and the third outside.

Authorities said on Wednesday 41 were killed. The figure is now believed to be 42 after Turkish state-run news agency Anadolu reported an injured woman had died.

"Our thoughts on those responsible for the attack lean toward Islamic State," Yildirim told a news conference in the capital Ankara, adding that investigations should be completed in the coming days and the identities of the bombers revealed.

John Brennan, head of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, also said the attack bore the hallmarks of Islamic State "depravity."

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity on Wednesday, said U.S. intelligence agencies do not have sufficient evidence to conclude definitively that Islamic State was responsible for the attack.

But the official added that Turkish authorities taking the lead in the investigation may have evidence the United States has not seen.

Turkey is part of a U.S.-led military coalition against Islamic State and home to around 3 million refugees from the five-year civil war in neighboring Syria.

Islamic State has established a self-declared caliphate on swathes of both Syria and Iraq and declared war on all non-Muslims and all Muslims who do not accept its ultra-hardline vision of Sunni Islam. It has claimed responsibility for similar bombing and gun attacks in Belgium and France in the past year.

Turkey pointed the finger at Islamic State for a triple suicide bombing and gun attack that killed 42 people at Istanbul's main airport, and President Tayyip Erdogan called it a turning point in the global fight against terrorism.

In the deadliest of a series of suicide bombings this year in Turkey, the attackers struck the busy airport, a symbol of Istanbul's role as the Muslim world's most open and cosmopolitan city, a crossroads between Europe and Asia.

Three bombers opened fire to create panic outside the airport on Tuesday night, before two of them got inside and blew themselves up. Two hundred and thirty-nine people were wounded, officials said, giving a full account of the bloodshed.

Explosions Rock Istanbul Airport, Multiple Deaths Reported

Explosions rocked Turkey's largest airport Tuesday night, killing at least three dozen people and wounding scores more in what appeared to be a coordinated terror attack, officials said.

The gunmen opened fire around 10:30 p.m. local time (3:30 p.m. ET) at the entrance of the international arrivals area at Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul, where detonated explosives sent people running for their lives, witnesses and officials said.

The number of dead and injured fluctuated steadily overnight amid the confusion, and Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on television that at least 36 people were killed.

US presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have responded to the suicide bombings at Turkey’s largest airport.

“Terrorists have struck again in the heart of one of our NATO allies,” Clinton said in a statement. “Today’s attack in Istanbul only strengthens our resolve to defeat the forces of terrorism and radical jihadism around the world. And it reminds us that the United States cannot retreat. We must deepen our cooperation with our allies and partners in the Middle East and Europe to take on this threat.”

She continued by offering her thoughts and prayers with the victims and families involved as well as all Turkish people.

Trump offered his own statement to reporters offering his prayers with the families and victims involved in the attack. “The whole world is stunned and horrified,” he began.

“The terrorist threat has never been greater. Our enemies are brutal and ruthless and will do anything to murder those who do not bend to their will. We must take steps now to protect America from terrorists, and do everything in our power to improve our security to keep America safe.”

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Quote:

The three suicide bombers who attacked Istanbul's main airport, killing 44 people, were from Russia, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, a senior Turkish official said Thursday. ...

The Karsi newspaper, quoting police sources, said the trio was part of a seven-person cell who entered Turkey on May 25. The assailants raised the suspicion of airport security on the day of the attack because they showed up in winter jackets on a summer day, several media outlets reported...

The private Dogan news agency said the Russian attacker entered the country one month ago and left his passport in a house the men rented in the neighborhood of Fatih.

How convenient.

Quote:

The senior Turkish official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government regulations, did not name the attackers, the Associated Press reported. He also would not confirm Turkish media reports that the Russian national was from the restive Daghestan region.

Authorities believe the Islamic State is behind the attack, although the terrorist group has not officially claimed responsibility.

The Islamic State claims the credit for ANY attack, whether they did it or not, so why the laggardly claim on this one?

There are a lot of complicated things going on in Turkey, and Erogan, who is a double-dealing snake, is at the heart of it all. His family has been making beaucoup de bucks on its ISIL oil trade, and has been transporting Saudi, Qatari, and American arms to jihadists everywhere, whether to Libya or Syria or Yemen or elsewhere. At the same time, Erdogan has been trying to extort EU accession and visa-free travel from Merkel using the prospect of millions of middle eastern migrants as a bludgeon. And at the same time he's been making deals with the west for the TANAP pipeline.

At the same time, Erdogan JUST apologized for downing the Russian jet, he JUST concluded a "peace deal" with Israel, and most astoundingly, his nation ... along with Syria and Israel, JUST APPLIED FOR MEMBERSHIP IN THE SCO.

The SCO is a MILITARY alliance which contains (among other nations) Russia and China.

I can't imagine what Erdogan thinks he's doing. Playing three sides off against each other? Flailing around for anyone who'll hook up with him?

I know this is a terrible thing to say, but since Erdogan has been implicated in several false flags already, this might jut be one of them. Or its possible that things are exactly as the Turkish media claim, but with the Erdogan government you'll won't know until much, much later.

--------------
I'll tell you what I DON'T like about Trump: I think that he has never confronted either the international banking cartel, nor the CIA-State Dept multi-headed hydra, nor the military-industrial complex. The last person to confront them was JFK (BTW, ALL immigration was illegal under JFK) and look what happened to him.

Turkey has alienated all it neighbors recently; all of them. That's why the about face with Russia and Israel. They are feeling very isolated. As for the bombers being from Russia, I believe it will make no difference.

I agree with you on the passport being suspicious. You might destroy it, unless you want it found. It could be a plant by Turkey, it could be a plant by someone else, it could be legit. So many ways to spin it.

- Erdogan is a snake and can't be trusted other than trusted to be up to something. Maybe here, maybe not. I feel the same way about Putin, about all politicians/governments.

- ISIS not claiming the attack? Might not be them. Maybe no one is claiming the attack because they don't want Turkey to know who did it? Maybe it's just too early? It really makes no sense for NO ONE to claim it... unless it's Russia. Or Turkey! Or Victoria Nuland! heh

I agree with your assessment of Erdogan G, but I am reminded of people acting covertly in these threads to promote their agendas. Agendas of hate. It is why I do not like posting in threads created by JAYNZTOWN. The theme is always the same. Anti Muslim, anti migration. His posts use populism in much the same way Trump does, and are a railing cry of hate.

I agree with the anger going on over mass migrations. I think (know) with global warming we are going to see dramatic influxes of migrants into the United States. Our Military warned of this being a major security risk a decade ago. I very much want to have theses discussions but without the hate. JAYNZTOWN is a skin head.

Mix of Turks and foreigners they claim
one seems to be a Chechen with perhaps Russian citizenship or an ex-Russian Chenchen

Turkish and Foreign fighters involved? The Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry denied that any of the attackers came from Kyrgyzstan, The A.P. said. According to the International Crisis Group, up to 4,000 volunteers from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan had joined the militant group by the end of 2015.In the transcript of his interrogation, Mr. Hame describes how, after reaching Syria last summer, he was first housed inside a dormitory that had “a hundred people – Russians, Chechens, some Chinese, one American, some Indians.” The presence of large numbers of Russian-speaking fighters in Syria has been widely reported. The three bombers opened fire to create panic outside, before two of them got inside the terminal building and blew themselves up. The third detonated his explosives at the entrance. A further 238 people were wounded.
The official gave no further details beyond confirming the attackers' nationalities and declined to be named because details of the investigation have not yet been released. Forensics teams had been struggling to identify the bombers from their limited remains, officials said earlier.
"A medical team is working around the clock to conclude the identification process," one of the officials said. The pro-government newspaper said one bomber was from Dagestan, which borders Chechnya, where Moscow has led two wars against separatists and religious militants since the Soviet Union collapsed. According to one account, a French citizen, Reda Hame, who was arrested in Paris last August soon after returning from Syria, told interrogators with France’s domestic intelligence wing that he had been recruited by the external operations arm of the group and assigned to create mayhem at a rock concert in France. Kadyr Malikov, a government adviser on Islamic affairs in Kyrgyzstan, said on Radio Free Europe last year that there was a special faction of Islamic State fighters that drew together recruits from Central Asia. It was called Mawarannahr, which he said was the Arabic term for Transoxiana, a region of Central Asia incorporating parts of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, he said.

The one-armed ISIS militant fled Russia 12 years ago and was granted 'refugee status' in Austria while he radicalised disenfranchised youngsters from the Chechen Republic – which fought two years of independence with Russia after the break up of the USSR.
