Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

The technology is CRISPR-Cas9

“I don’t know that we know enough about the human genome, or maybe any other genome, to fully answer that question (of gene editing consequences). But people will use the technology whether we know enough about it or not.” Jennifer Doudna

“With gene drives and CRISPR we now have a power over species of all kinds that we never thought possible,” says Hank Greely, director of Stanford’s Center for Law and the Biosciences. “The potential good we can do is immense. But we need to acknowledge that we are dealing with a fundamentally new kind of power ...”

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I think people have no idea how radical this technology is. I know I don't. When I read about it, what biologists say is that it can be used to splice genes together in a selected fashion, as opposed to the "shotgun" approach of (literally) shooting foreign genes on gold pellets into host DNA, the way they do genetic engineering (more like genetic gambling) now.

I suspect that this technology is what is being used to make the now-allowed "chimera" (human and non-human DNA mixed together). The "chimera" will certainly cause the anti-abortionists fits, since many of them believe that "human" life begins at conception. Now, they have to decide HOW MUCH genetic material is required to be "human", or whether there is a special gene sequence (the god sequence) which endows embryos with a human soul. Real life: it sure doesn't follow our strict categorization! Alive or dead? Human or not? The lines are so blurred!

But I have no idea how it works. Another thing to learn.

I think it's time you disabused yourself of that pleasant little fairy tale about our fearless leaders being some sort of surrogate daddy or mommy, laying awake at night thinking about how to protect the kids. HA! In reality, they're thinking about who to sell them to so that they can get a few more shekels in their pockets.

This one thing is like the genetic Manhattan Project. It's THAT radical. It allows you to locate one very specific gene, remove it, and replace it with another of your choosing.

People are already making designer genes for animals and plants.

Let me just point out that the author left out vital relevant facts in the opinion piece. Doing that is known as cherry-picking. And whether you do that in the news, in discussion, in debate or in opinion, when you distort the facts, you've changed the nature of your communication into propaganda. But WE don't have any of THAT in the US, do we?!
