Ron, known for his portrayal of Shepherd Book on Joss Whedon’s beloved show Firefly and its cinematic sequel Serenity, has passed away

Ron Glass, the handsome, prolific character actor best known for his role as the gregarious, sometimes sardonic detective Ron Harris in the long-running cop comedy “Barney Miller,” has died at age 71.

Glass died Friday of respiratory failure, his agent, Jeffrey Leavett, told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Glass was also the voice of Randy Carmichael, the genial neighbour and father of four children in the popular Nickelodeon cartoon series “Rugrats” and its spinoff, “All Grown Up.”

A few of Book’s Firefly castmates and crew, including Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, and Whedon, tweeted out loving memories to Book after learning of his passing.

He also made appearances in such shows as “Friends,” ”Star Trek: Voyager“ and ”Designing Women.“

Joss Whedon, ‘Firefly’ Cast Pay Tribute to Ron Glass: ‘He Got There With Grace, Humor and Enormous Heart’

Jewel Staite posted a picture of herself on set with Glass. “This is me acting like an idiot just so I could hear Ron Glass laugh,” she wrote. “He was the kind of person that remembered the details, that asked about your family’s well-being. He hugged hard and often. He would laugh till he cried at a sick joke and top it with a worse one. He loved a Grey Goose crantini and spilled one on my white jeans in the heat of telling a story, and then just said, ‘Girl, those were ugly pants anyway.’ I adored him. Everybody did. I love you, Ron. Can’t wait to see you again. ‘I don’t care what you believe. Just believe it.'”

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Wow, that is way too young.

We just happen to be watching Barney Miller re-runs and it took me a few episodes to clue in who Dt. Harris was.

Firefly wouldn't have been the same without him. He just nailed that performance, like he did in Barney Miller. His portrayals were so complete it was hard to imagine that he WASN'T the character that he was acting.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Shepherd Book was my favorite character and Ron Glass my favorite actor from Firefly.

RIP Ron Glass.

Took a person of great soul to make such a wonderful character come to life.

15 years.....

That's a long time.

Not only do we mourn the passing of Ron Glass, but we officially put the nail in the coffin for any meaningful resurgence of Firefly in any meaningful way.

Firefly worked because of the great diversity and depth of its characters and how these strangers grew to overlook the unagreeable aspects of each other in a very cruel and unfair "Verse" and grew to love each other as family.

For the first time since I saw the show in 2005, I for one am taking a hard stance Against any further Firefly episodes. The only thing they could do now is make more movies after Book died in Serenity.

I'm still pretty baffled why Wash died that meaningless death in Serenity, but now Wash's passing makes sense in a pragmatic way.

Hell... I guess their still could be future episodes too, but we'd have to realize that it would be a much different show going into it.

The closest person that could even come to filling Book's shoes IMO would be Simon. On one hand that's totally insane since he's a huge Science Nerd and likely thought of religion as nothing more than fables, but on the other hand I think he had the makings of a very wise old man that people would respect one day. He was likely an athiest, and maybe still is 15 years later, but i don't think he would preach what he knew nothing about. People would come to him to seek guidance about things he did know.

He is a very kind hearted man and so long as River is safe I feel that he could be a good mentor to anyone who needed guidance. The only difference, in the end, between Book and Simon that I see is that Book would be able to fall back on his religion if River were to die. I feel that Simon would be driven insane and become a "Big Bad" if that ever were to happen. The type of Bad Guy who's only purpose in life is to watch the entire Universe burn down into ashes.

Jayne will always be Jayne. Malcom will always be Malcom. Even Kaylee will always be Kaylee (Sure, she was just oozing nerdy sex appeal in her mid 20's, but that didn't define her at all with everything else she had going for her).

That's where Inara has an inherent problem. As it was, she was already the Oldest Woman on Firefly in 2001. Her turn in Deadpool made my head spin when i was about halfway through the movie and realized it was Morena playing his sexy Cougar GF, but not too many years left of that in her. Even if they revived the show tomorrow, they should think about a storyline where her and Mal are already "space married", or on their way to it....

And what would you do with Zoe after Wash died? She was already cold as ice from her past battles and it seemed kind of insane that her and Wash were even a thing. I mean, she would sit in the mess hall with Mal while they shared an apple they cut with their knives over old war stories, meanwhile Wash was busy in the cockpit playing with his dinosaur toys like 5 year old me....

The reason Zoe was with Wash was because of the extreme Yin/Yang relationship they had. Balance. Opposites Attract to the Nth Degree.

What would happen to Zoe in the last 8 or so years, after she finished grieving the loss of Wash?

I honestly think that if you revive Firefly now, it's ZOE that would be the Die Hard, No Nonsense Bitch. If Simon was doing his job as Big Brother, River will be quite a bit more normal now, and maybe even be in a relationship.

I dunno. Just spitballing here.

Even after Serenity was made, I was hoping for years they'd go back to the TV show and fill in the many blanks, but now that's impossible.

Rest in peace, Shepherd Book.

Do Right, Be Right. :)
