And not because Vox and The Atlantic tell you to. They're only jumping on board now because it's trendy and they can put the economical onus on you instead of on the current Administration.

https://www.vox.com/the-goods/22725031/buying-less-supply-chain-holida

I must say, that for Vox and Atlantic articles, these happen to be some of the most readable paragraphs they've ever put out. I don't agree with all of it, and they don't really ever tell you the real benefits of refusing to be a mindless consumer, but they do bring up some good points to consider. There's actually really little if anything at all to argue with the article from The Atlantic other than omitting some key reasons why ditching materialism is good for you.

The problem though, is that everybody knows that if you did a tour of these journalists houses in the first 30 seconds you'd realize that these articles are just them telling you to do what they wish they could do if they had any capability at all to stand by their non-existent convictions.

Forget about all of the stories of shipping problems and the tanking economy in the media for a moment.

The minimalist's life is where it's at. There are certain thresholds that many people could never reach, and that's okay. Most modern people could live the way that I do, but unless we actually suffer another REAL Great Depression, they probably never would.

I learned quite a few lasting life lessons regarding money and budgeting very early in my adult life, and I was fortunate enough to be living with my grandmother through one of them and she had always been extremely frugal having been born in a poor family during the Great Depression. I've bought all of my non-undergarment clothing from Goodwill for at least a decade now, but even I wouldn't bust out a sewing machine and patch holes in my socks like she used to. Certainly not when I can find 3 packs of socks for free after rebate about once per year in the sales paper and stock up on them.

Stripping away the need to be a mindless consumer will equate to freedom that you, as not somebody in the 1%, never before knew was available to you.

It won't happen overnight. Not hardly. But it is possible to get yourself into a position where you don't have to spend the majority of your adult life doing things you resent and/or find zero enjoyment in doing.

Right now, it's put me in a position where I don't need to be brave to stand by my own convictions regarding the vaccine mandates. I have all the respect in the world for anybody who has said no, whatever they have lost in the process. Especially those who were in high-paying positions that required a high amount of training and experience and can't just be filled by anybody. But the most respect comes for those brave enough to do it when they haven't padded out their savings and don't know where food is going to come from next week because of their choice. That is a terribly scary place to be in and I have all the admiration in the world for your courage.

I'm just going to sit this one out for now. I'm never getting the vaccine. Ever. No matter what. No threats to my life or livelihood are going to work. And just like everything else in the news cycle this will eventually all become a fading memory and then I'll go back to work for somebody...

Maybe.

Yup I've read about the KULAK, they were they the frontier redneck farmer but in the Russia Empire or East Europe or Socialist Republics
...the USA aint old Russia you still almost have your freedom of speech

Maybe they thought the same in old Ukraine long ago...the hopium lie of 'minimalist life'...but then ... government portrayed kulaks as class enemies of the USSR.
The redneck with a pitchfork or gun or corn were classed in CRT as an almost wealthy peasant these were considered "sub-kulaks"
the socialists wanted a redistribution of the bread crumbs

Shutting down a system it led to a Ukrainian famine—known as the Holodomor, a combination of the Ukraine words for “starvation” and “to inflict death” costing lives of millions of people. The new social policy, the political changes it has been recognized by Ukraine and 15 other countries as a genocide of the Ukrainian people carried out by the Soviet government, perhaps even planned by Bolsevik elites to eliminate a redneck Ukrainian off-the-grid independence movement?

We've seen this before, several times in my lifetime. This isn't even as bad as some of those were (yet).

You just have to believe like all of those other times that the sky isn't falling this time either.

Meanwhile, not loading up on shit you don't need when prices are getting higher isn't bad advice. Particularly if you're also loading up on credit card debt to acquire it.

Brown bag your lunch. Keep your car longer than you usually would. Don't turn your nose down at buying good clothes at Goodwill or other thrift stores. Cut the cable. Get a prepaid cellphone plan that will cost 1/5th of your current plan (after you can get out of it without forking over $500 for the privlige).

The end goal should be to reach 1/2 year of your current living expenses as a nest egg. After that I would recommend you use your new habits to continue that growth, but on the off chance that our currency really does a nose dive and/or gets replaced, you probably don't really need to. Just make sure you maintain that and that you pad it to at least keep up with inflation.

And when you do buy "stuff" again, maybe consider buying things like tools that can help you get things done on your own that you used to pay other people to do. Invest in yourself. Not in mindless consumerism, keeping up with the Jones's, and on things that will depreciate in value.

Well... You can be blackpilled about everything if you want to be, sure.

What you seem to be saying here is "Why do anything when everybody is fucked no matter what you do?"

I don't believe in predetermination. Not religiously speaking or otherwise.

And if your predictions come true, which very honestly they could, I will be among the last of the people forced to bend knee and kiss the ring or die.

You could be too.

Does the entire of Middle America, the Dry Basin Mountain people, the Cities and Towns of Great Lakes, the Mid West do all these people have the ability to live off the Grid if the Shit Really Hit the Fan?

... Can the Nordic New England Canadian and Native Algonquian peoples live off the Grid in those cold winters, what of the Appalachiam Cultural Region or the Gulf, the French Hispanic Black odld America Culture and Cajuns of the Gulf Coast...I know some do almost live off Grid but then they also heavily Depend on Federal help whenever some Hurricane starts up. Can you really disconnect?

I won't tell you how much I spend but if I did , You might be shocked to hear how little I spend. They probably will find a way to tax you, China and other places already have social credits, it could come to Europe and America and a government always find new ways to add on new social payment costs....spying on your 600 $ bank accounts was a debate in another thread. Like I said you can read about human engineered social problems in our old history of our world like Ukraine, there was also a collapse in Ireland under the British and Yemen is getting bombed today and currently under starvation and civil war. I like people who can live off the grid, its wise to have a stock of medications, food stocked up a generator etc but going Amish or "Rip Van Winkle" story is not always wise. I still believe we should be futurists, don't go Luddite andmaybe we should continue to connect to our modernizing world.

I don't think the future will be happy and good or miserable and bad, it will be probably a mix of both, a mix of the Utopia and the Dystopia

For one year, I lived and survived in a city with 6,000 people without water, electricity, gasoline, medical help, civil defense, distribution service, any kind of traditional service or centralized rule.
Money soon became worthless. We returned to an exchange. For a tin can of tushonka (think Soviet spam), you could have a woman.
Arms, ammunition, candles, lighters, antibiotics, gasoline, batteries and food. We fought for these things like animals.
In these situations, it all changes. Men become monsters.
Strength was in numbers. For a man living alone, getting killed and robbed would be just a matter of time, even if he was armed.

So you get tired of the system, climbing the ladder, an endless rat race.

Even if people go off-grid I for example can still connect to the world by phone or computer, look at new sciences and inventions, keep an eye on what propaganda world governments or medias are pushing. If you totally remove yourself from the system sometimes you remove your own buying power, your political ability to engage. Let's go back to 'Ukraine' now what if someone really wicked and evil got to power, be they Left or Right, Blue or Red ... All of the West Coast votes one color ... its starting to feel like Ukraine history a global Commadre and Socialism system on the West Coast, with at least 40% maybe as high as 60% of shipping moving through that West Coast ... isn't that a strategic danger, a risk of security against the US people. The corrupt political weirdos could simply gang up and starve the USA, yup its not just Playstations, Furniture, Nintendo, Plastics or Machinery that comes from Asia...your health care products are getting shipped in, your textiles and clothes, even Food.

Having an entire Coast that ships most of your trade and economic life all one political color is not wise

I'm not predicting any of this 'apocalypse', I'm saying its unwise to start disengagement, maybe there is no perfect answer, maybe the world and universe will always be in flux between extremes of left and right and the battle of debate could be an endless struggle

I'm not telling people they should be disengaged. I'm also not telling people to live off the grid. I'm certainly not doing either of those things myself.

Honestly, a very large part of me being able to live the way I do is by absolutely maximizing the internet that is in my home for only $20 per month. It provides all of my entertainment needs (more than I'll ever use). For an extra few bucks a month I have a phone on it. It's a virtually limitless source of how-to stuff.

It would be a lot harder to live off of nearly nothing 25 years ago before the internet was a thing.

The boredom alone would probably kill you.

If any of the visions of the future that preppers are prepping for come true, that's probably not a world worth living in very long anyhow.

Besides. Anybody with a gun is going to be able to get whatever they want. No need for prepping when you're armed, I say.
