Some folk are a little unhappy about certain characters in firefly, for instance there are those who think Simon & River are a danger to the firefly crew because they have the Alliance on their tails, others say Inara might put the group in jeopardy because she's not really one of them and supported unification, some are unsure about Shepherd what is his past about, while others think Jayne is untrustworthy.

So what do you folks think ?

The biggest danger to the longevity of individual characters aboard Serenity is Whedon.

They're all going to die.

I was just funnin'.

That said, I could probably make a case for him being the biggest threat. It would go something along the lines of who would be the least likely to turn on Mal:
Zoe - Always faithful, always ready.
Kaylee - Serenity, 'nuff said.
River - Mal's the replacement father figure, She'll hold on to this life preserver with both hands.
Simon - Where goes River, there goes Simon.
Book - Rightly or wrongly he's latched on to Mal as his unicorn. He'll redeem himself by restoring Mal's faith no matter where that takes him.

Now things get a bit trickier:
Jayne - Why does the whipped dog still come at the master's call? He won't knowingly turn on Mal himself. He's learned that turning on anyone else is the same thing. Jayne knows he can trust Mal and will always be treated fairly (even the airlock incident) which is probably better than he's ever had it. He won't foul his own nest again.
Inara - She might leave Serenity but she would never endanger Kaylee. Would she endanger Mal? Probably not.

Which brings us to Wash. What's his motivation for being on Serenity? Would he have moved on if he hadn't married Zoe? Wouldn't things be a lot simpler if they settled down someplace safer? Zoe's never going to leave Mal's side while he's still alive. Sure would solve a lot of problems if Mal was out of the picture.

Firefly being the ship, the crew or the show?

If you think about it Wash pretty much controlls the fate of Serenity, him being the pilot and all. Only one else is Kaylee but Kaylee's not going to do anything. And in Shindig there was the interchange between Wash and Mal. Went something along the lines of

Wash: that's because I'm going down too quick. Surely crash and kill us all

Mal: Well, when that happens let me know.

Granted both were kidding, but there's a point for Wash. But in actuality based on prior experience the biggest threat is Yosafbridge.

Nope, Minear isn't involved with Serenity, so our beloved crew may well be safe for the first movie. But he expressed interest with being involved with any sequels.

Check, but aren't all of the orginal crew going to die in Serenity? :deliberately confusing emoticon to heighten the tension:

Speaking of which, did anyone else worry when Wash made one of his dinosaurs say "Curse you and your sad but inevitable betrayal?" I've been thinking that there has to be a major betrayal in the future ever since then - and that Jayne's betrayal was just a dry run.

As someone else has observed, Wash himself is as good a candidate as any - particularly given that he's one of the only ones with a genuine conflict of interest with Mal (over Zoe).

there is no " you and" in the quote. the correct quote is:
"Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal"

also, i agree with CARBONEL that Wash's line might have been forshadowing something in the way of betrayal. Although there is the distinct possibility that we're both reading too far into this. Of course, in my opinion, you can never read too far into or over-analyze Joss's work - especially with his love of forshadowing. (example: the episode "restless" from "buffy: the vampire slayer"; fondly renamed by myself as "the cheese episode")

Well, if anyone has any ideas about the betrayal depicted in Wash's line ("Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal") please post a reply.

You know, Jayne does tell Mal that he'll betray him if the price is right. Also, he joined Serenity when he betrayed the guy he was working for then. And he betrayed Stitch. I say Jayne, 'Ariel' notwithstanding

Now we have to be married. I'm in the family way.

[q]You know, Jayne does tell Mal that he'll betray him if the price is right. Also, he joined Serenity when he betrayed the guy he was working for then. And he betrayed Stitch. I say Jayne, 'Ariel' notwithstanding [/q]

That's in the pilot, long before Ariel, and also before he pitches in and helps rescue Mal in War Stories (with no reward in sight).

In the commentary for The Train Job, Joss says that Jayne's character was originally "designed just to be an asshole, that was the idea", but that Adam made the character "beloved instantly". He may have been originally envisioned as an internal threat, but the character evolved. Given the chance, Jayne would repeatedly save the ship and crew.

The biggest danger/threat must be Mal's inner demons. He must work through them to grow as a character.

You all missed one person - Mal. One day his un-grounded sense of right and wrong could well ge them all killed, or one of his vengeance kill trips. Just look at what happened in Serenity. Plus, the very loyalty he inspires causes most (bar Jayne) to ask very few questions. And everyone makes a mistake sooner or later.

Lets run the list..
Mal - Mal does not love the ship. He loves what the ship represents- Freedom. His crew is his family. He was raised by a mom and about 40 work hands. He used to a "mixed" family. He would die or kill for his family (though I think her prefers he last)

Zoe - Whatever happened in the valley of Serenity and the prison afterwards, her life is connected to Mal's. She loves Wash. She saved his life before the captain's ONLY because it was the "logical" choice. With Wash gone, I would not say she is suicidal but I would say her judgement is impaired. She is a threat but a controllable one.

Kaylee - I like to think of Kaylee as the "Awww Damn" factor i.e. "aww damn Kaylee why did you bring THAT guy on board", "aww damn why did she come barging into the cargo bay like that", and "aww damn Kaylee do you have to use the puppy eyes on me". About the only way Kaylee is a threat would be trying to do the right thing.

Wash - Wash never was a threat. If he betrayed the crew or Mal he knows without a doubt Zoe would leave him and not look back. IF Zoe agreed to leave though I have no doubt he would have left the ship to be with her.

Simon - Here is the biggest threat. He likes Kaylee but .... His first loyalty is to River. He will follow Mal but only AFTER he has determined the risk factor to River. He argues continually with Mal. If faced with a choice of the crew or River, he would let the crew burn. He would be sad but wouldnt stop him.

River - She has BIG issues. I think she would not betray the crew consciously. She already showed she was willingly to sacrifice her life for them. They (as broken and crazy as they are) are her "normal" and her path back to humanity.

Jayne - Oh yes Jayne BELIEVES he can betray anyone. He likes to think he is ruthless. However he has stayed and been forced (via air lock) to acknowledge that the crew means something to him. I am sure given time he will realize what that is.

Booker - His past is shady. His present is confusing. I know Jesus walked among the sinners but I dont think he ever whacked a cop in the face or carried high alliance identification.

Inara - Inara will not betray the crew. It is just that simple. She is a "protector". I have a few theories on her but all in allshe is not a betray kinda person.

All this is just my opinion and does not reflect the opinion of the voices from the vent... well not the hall vent.. the bedroom vent kinda agrees with me..

Alliance...sure. Yet a notably ungoverned body of people doesn't have the motivation Niska has. They're likely to form a wide net of traps for Serenity, but their hearts isn't into it. The alliance's best bet is to send assasins to find River Tam. And even that can fail. Bureaucrats will eventually need LUCK to bring them the Tam siblings.

Niska has time and money on his side. His revenge will be served cold.

And by the way, dude, find another soap-box.

It might be Nishka or remotely YoSafBridge. They both have a good reason to do hate everyone on Serenity. Maybe Nishka using YoSafBridge. They both have "issues" with the whole crew but especially Mal.

Niska needs to reclaim his reputation and he'll wait and wait until the right moment and circumstances to get his revenge. I could see him creating an alliance of necessity and then callously discarding YoSafBridge.

It would be a great episode though.
