Alright, so we all know Joss does comics. There was Fray and the most recent run of X-Men titles. Both dealt with Joss' theme of outcasts trying to fit in and find their place in the world. As ever, Joss wrote great dialogue, awesome characters, and great dilemmas for them to sift through. Everyone here knows he's The Man when it comes to an engaging script, so I won't belabor the point.

Any of you who read Penny Arcade ( http://www.penny-arcade.com ) know that Gabe and Tycho do comics -- and how! Great facial expressions, a brand of deadpan sarcasm that could be coming right out of Spike's, Faith's, or Mal's mouth. They have recently been doing a bunch of one-shot publicity comics for PC and console games. The general idea is that the creator gives them a seed of an idea and a 'verse to play in, and they go wild. The comic gets thousands of hits, so anything they help out on gets some great mindshare among the geek community. To top it off, Gabe has recently admitted to interest in a project in the "post-apocalyptic Western" genre!

Firefly (and by extension Serenity) already has good visibility among geeks, but I'm convinced that if Joss, Gabe, and Tycho teamed up, they could put out a one-shot comic that would generate great buzz for all involved. Perhaps something distributed in print at the premiere, or posted to the official site the week beforehand. In any case, with the three of them working on it, I can't see how it would be anything other than a runaway hit among the Neterati and Browncoats.

What do y'all think? Am I out of my gorram skull, or is this a project that could really take off?

Much as I like both Whedon/Firefly and the Penny Arcade duo.... don't really see it working as well as you think.

Whedon's brand of humor is a lot like a ricochet bullet. Sarcasm and deadpan, just usually bouncing in directions you'd never expect. Don't think the gaming duo has those kind of chops - their humor is almost pure deadpan, like an anvil hitting the floor.

Interesting idea though. Fling it Gabe's way, see what he makes of it - they are certainly spreading in all directions. If he hasn't thought it already - Tycho at least has made mention of Firefly before.

Scott Kurtz of PvP fame is also a Firefly fan.

I dunno... Deep down, Firefly is very sincere, and Gabe and Tycho... aren't. I didn't know Tycho'd mentioned it... can you link?

Now, a Firefly comic is a fantastic idea, and I'm astonished it hasn't come up before. I wonder if the deal with Universal precludes it at all? The only problem with it is that I wouldn't want anything really important to happen because the comic should probably not be integral to a universe that exists in audiovisual formats. Still... it would be a great place for episodic storylines they never got to play with it.

Who would you want to illustrate? What sorts of stories would you want to see? Would it work?

*laughing* A far better summation than I ever could have come up with.

EDIT - don't have a link, really - I just remember it coming up in Tycho's usual gab. Might have just been mere awareness rather than actual interest. They were in San Diego as well, after all.

EDIT AGAIN - Bah. Took me thirty seconds after thinking that to find it.

They talked about Firefly awhile back. They are both big fans of the show.

First, their sincerity: when they care about something, they can be almost ferocious in their sincerity. Check out Gabe's summation of his success: that he would be only too happy if someone else managed to acquire the same sort of pull he's got with the geeks, so long as they also used their clout to do things like a Children's Hospital Toy Drive. Talk about using your powers for good or for awesome.

But if they're doing the art and Joss is doing the script, their sincerity isn't an issue -- just their talent! Let Joss build a short prequel about the crew, or about Blue Sun, or about the Reavers. They could sit down over a long lunch and look at sketches, decide what did and didn't fit in the 'Verse, and go from there.

I just think their art, especially the Cardboard Tube Samurai pieces, shows a lot of talent. Their ability to put just the right facial expression on a person while uttering just the right line is the equivalent of having good actors for a script.
