MOHRSTOUTBEARD

After entirely too much time struggling against computer trouble, software mishaps, and grizzly bears, I have finished the "Big Damn Roadtrip." It clocks in at just about an hour, so finding a way to distribute it is the next step.

I'll do my best to compress it, but it'll still be a decently sized file. I have a friend who's willing to put up some webspace for it, but he's out of town for at least a few more days. The word "torrent" has been bandied about, but I'm really not familiar enough with that, so any suggestions would be welcome.

I'm also going to try to make a full-fledged trailer for it, for those who aren't sure about taking the time to download. The majority of the "documentary" (loosest sense of the word?) is taken up by the panel, with the other twenty or thirty minutes revolving around our journey. I know a major reason people will want to see it is for the panel, but hopefully the rest of it is interesting enough.

After having to watch yourself and your footage twenty million times whilst editing, you sometimes become a bit modest about the merits of your "documentary" (I feel weird even calling it a documentary without the quotes). There's a lot of stuff I wish I had filmed - namely, our conversation with Gabe and Tycho from Penny Arcade, and cartoonist John Allison, who, along with Bill Murray, is cool enough to pull off the phrase "ring-a-ding-ding" - but, what's there is good, in my opinion. It's hard to be objective because it's my experience, but, hey, that's okay. I'm rambling. It's all good.

It takes you from us leaving Sacramento to our time at the convention to the panel, and the waiting in line for the signing, and my personal experience with the BDH (which I narrate over photos which were graciously provided by Okayy. . .I wasn't able to find an e-mail address to contact you directly, but I gave you credit for "additional photography" since you said it was alright to use your pics).

Anyway. I'll shut up now and let you guys tell me where to go from here.

EDIT: Also, I was informed that there may be some interest in showing this thing at shindigs and cons and the like. . .not sure how accurate my sources are, but if that's the case, I'll work out something special for those cases.

EDIT OF EDIT: Also, why do I have to type the subject again? That makes me look the fool without even trying. I shaved off my subject heading for you, devil woman.

I'd love to see it MohrStoutbeard, as I'm sure many others would too! Sorry I don't have any advice on how to distribute it. I've only just learned of this 'bit torrent' that everyone is talking about, but I haven't tried it yet. Hope to see it posted here soon. I can't wait! Thanks so much!

I'd like to see it too, but an hour long video is quite a bit to be downloading.

I'd be willing to post it to my web space for a limited time as long as I'm not the only one who makes it available (I'm sure it'll take a number of willing hosts to make it feasible).

But maybe burning to CDs is the way to go. You could ask for volunteers who'd be willing to make X number of copies. Send a CD to each volunteer, and let them make their 20 (or whatever) copies, and when they're done, they can each announce it on the board and give them out first ask first served.

I volunteer (obviously).

Can you put me first in line?

My poor soul is still in dial-up hell, so there's no way I can download it. If a browncoat does start burning copies, let me know. I can contribute for media, shipping, etc. costs.

Or, if you can't find a handful of volunteers willing to make 20 copies and fork over the postage costs, you could send me a copy, I'll make 20 copies and only send them to people who promise to make ONE copy and send it to someone else who promises to make one copy. etc. etc. I'm sure there'll be some deadbeats who'll skip out on the deal, but at least the seed will be planted, so to speak.

Well, I'm still working on exporting the movie into a suitably compressed file. Sometimes I'll find a good combonation of settings that yield a nice estimated file size, but shortly thereafter go completely over it (i.e. 150 MB "estimated" turns into 1 GB "real").

Sort of like when you make an appointment at the DMV and arrive on time, but still have to wait an hour. The appointment really has no basis in reality.

The VCD/CD/DVD/Flipbook idea might be do-able for those who can't get it online, but we'll have to wait and see. I start college on Monday, so I'm getting ready for that as well as dealing with the BDR.

Anyway, glad to see there's some enthusiasm for the project. I'm sure we'll work something out.
