What alarmed me most wasn’t the suspected misconduct. It was how reluctant my university seemed to confront it.

Okay...

First off. I'm not even going to give the kids shit about cheating. Because if I knew the class was bullshit and I could cheat my way through it and not get caught, I would too. Most of the smartest people you have seen on TV "cheated" their way through life, and so did most of the smartest people you know personally. There's a hell of a lot of smart people out there that didn't become scientists and lawyers and just end up doing a lot less work to coast right on by while the rest of the ants are marching right along every day.

So... This is an ADULT problem.

And while I applaud the teacher for coming out and saying this to the press about his own employer with his full name attached to the "whistleblowing", really dude... what did you expect?

Quote:

I am a professor of economics at Brown University, where I have taught for the past 34 years. During much of that time, I have taught Welfare Economics and Social Choice Theory, an advanced undergraduate course in mathematical economics.

But this spring semester, I suspect that more than half of my students cheated their way through the course. And even after I reported it, it took Brown far too long to get involved.

Here’s how it happened: In part due to the tragic shooting that took place at Brown on December 13 during a review session for a final exam, I decided to move my course’s two exams—the midterm and the final—from an in-class exam to a take-home, closed-book format. I thought that would help students deal with exam anxiety. The exams would be made available to students through an online portal, and they would have 11 hours (for a two-hour test) to complete and submit each. Unsurprisingly, the course enrollment jumped to 86, far above 30, the highest maximum in previous semesters.

The results from the midterm were immediately suspicious.

No fucking shit.

Are you mental?

Who were your parents and how much did they have to donate to the college to buy your diploma?

Even if this little thing you may not of heard of called A.I. weren't a thing, on what fucking planet is this a good idea?

My guess is that nearly every student you had cheated on that test, save for the rare few who actually belong at Brown. And not just once. You watched them do it during the mid-term, and then you didn't change a single thing and let them walk all over you again for the final.

You want to know who the Smart ones out of those who didn't actually learn the subject matter of your little bullshit class are?

Look for the ones who weren't greedy.

You and I already know most of those A's aren't really A's.

Hey... All I'm saying is that you give me 11 hours to complete any college level 2 hour exam with zero oversight of any kind and full access to the internet, I'm passing it. I don't care what the subject matter is or how advanced the class.

Stupid.

You can teach somebody all their lives, but you can never fix stupid.
