It went splat. That sucks for science. Two years probably gone down the drain. The live feed was pretty cool.

Splat is an understatement. It hit the ground at over 100 mph; parachutes never deployed. And if b-movies have taught us anything, they have taught us that even now the malevolent cosmic hitch-hikers that stowed away on the craft are climbing out as thick fog billows from the capsule......

It's funny you brought that up, Dug. That was exactly my first thought when I read it crashed this morning, "Oh great. Now all those atomic samples are going to turn into the chicken heart that ate New York." But hey, maybe we'll get another Highlander movie out of it.

I shaved off my beard for you, devil woman!

Bill Cosby! Yay!

Anyway, despite the sudden thwacking, did it land on target? I mean, who cares if it's busted if it hit the bullseye, right?

Well, they had planned to catch it in mid-air.

No, seriously.

The samples of solar gasses were delicate enough that they had 2 helicopters set to grab the chute before it could smack into the ground and break.

Since the chutes did not deploy. it smacked into the ground and broke. A lot. So now there are gasses scooped from the sun loose on earth. Oh, Scifi network could milk this for ages....

Cool. Those gasses will irradiate some poor roach that will bite some poor fat-bald-greasy divorcee and he will become....ROACH-KING!
