Not to be a nitpicky moo, but there are times when you have nowt better to do with your time....

In Trash we see Jayne electrocute himself and fly backwards before landing unconcious on the roof of Serenity. We also see Book manhandling him back into the ship and eventually in the Infirmary, where Simon has paralysed him.

1) When Simon drugged Jayne before, they could only get him as far as the stairs "He's just... heavy" Kaylee says.
2) Simon has gone to all the trouble of paralysing him so he won't wrench his neck except that it looks damn like this has already happened. You'd think they'd have one of those special stetchers for getting people through hatches (and was bugging me all day to remember what they are called)

(I'm now officially counting this as exam revision.... hehehe!)

in regards to the drugging to protect jayne, i believe simon's reason was so that jayne would not do further damage to his spine which may be something further down his back than in his neck.

as to the "how did they move him" kind of thing. in "the train job", moving jayne was not exactly a priority. he was not in any danger and they could have honestly left him on the bridge. in "trash", however, the situation is more severe and getting jayne to the infirmary is high priority. maybe they all just tried harder. in addition, perhaps book was more capable in "trash" since he is jayne's workout buddy and perhaps he had built up some more strength since the train job.

Well, at least watching this has made me go back over the stuff we did on spinal injury last year....

I guess you can't exclude that Simon was paralysing Jayne just for the crack, and to have a little heart to heart. (Be nice to medics, or they will do nasty things to you..... mwhahahah!)

Whilst making sure that Jayne doesn't move is fundamentally correct as spinal precautions remain until you can do a fully neuro exam to exclude injury (According to my lecture notes anyhow) but these include checking for movement and sensation- which you can't do if you've just paralysed someone.

My point was that they moved him off the roof like it didn't matter, which it really does as you should immobilise the spine ASAP if you suspect injury. It would have looked quite cool to have moved Jayne on the Robertson-Neil stetcher (which you can move people vertically with) which I would really expect a ship with vertical hatches to carry. Perhaps this just stuck in my head as I have always thought that the R-N stretchers were a really neat piece of design and they could be made to look quite futuristic.

GUNRUNNER

Well in TTJ Zoë wasn’t there, in Trash Zoë was there so I think Zoë helped haul Jayne down the hatch being the strong soldier she is.

That's true, Zoe wasn't in Train Job when they had to lift Jayne.

I was just watching Objects in Space and I realised I sounded like Early with my design obsession. :)
