I loved this episode the first time I saw it, and I think I appreciate it even more every time I rewatch it. There's so much in this episode that wouldn't be done on any other series, and that's just in terms of the character development. It's hard to believe that the FOX network didn't see the quality of this series, even when episodes like this and "Objects in Space" came across their desk. And yet, there's plenty of room on the schedule for shows like "Fastlane"...

Here's my review for Firefly 1.10: "War Stories" (DVD version):

Overall, this episode is another excellent example of character development, once again spinning out of the plot and character elements established in the first several episodes of the season. The brutal and honest nature of the story is never obscured, and the characters reveal important depths in the process. This is a highlight for the character of Wash, who finally gets some real development, becoming much more than the comic relief.

BLUEBOMBER

I liked this episode too. My two favorite scenes are when (1) Mal and Wash are being electrocuted and they are trying to keep conscious by arguing with each other, and (2)Zoe first goes to Niska to negotiate their release (the way she doesn't even flinch when he hands her Mal's ear is just brilliant acting!).

The whole "meet the real man" subject that keep cropping up in the dialogue seems kind of strained to me, although it does add a little something to Niska's sadist character. I'm not sure we've even come close to seeing the "real" Mal. He's already a bitter, tortured individual who, I'm sure, has been in situations like this before. But whenever he DOES cross that line - and some day he just might - it's not gonna be pretty.

I wonder if we'll see Niska return in the films. And yes, I say film(S) because I'm sure the BDM is gonna do so great at the box office people will SCREAM for a sequel!

I thought it was intristing that this episode is the only time Book uses Chinese. It sounds weird to hear him say it, I guess because you don't expect a preacher to cuss like that.

DANTE144

I had a question about this episode!

When Gina Torres goes in to save Wash and Mal, she has a pair of Jerico 941s/ Baby Eagles. This is the same Gun used by Spike Speigle in the anime series, Cowboy Bebop.

Is this possibly a nod to another "Cowboy in Space" series?
