Now that I think of it, Nixon didn't have to resign. He could have been stubborn, destroyed the tapes, and forced Congress to go through the uncertain legal process of removing him. Without the tapes, the end of his term in office would have arrived before the wheels of justice had finished turning in the Senate, but Nixon exited early so that he could get a pardon and avoid being prosecuted after leaving office.
Trump will be stubborn and create much unnecessary trouble for himself in retirement, unlike Nixon. Trump will be in courtrooms for years after he leaves office. Nixon had a peaceful retirement, avoided all that legal maneuvering, because he was smarter than Trump.

The Reuters report examined Trump-branded buildings in Florida because “determining the ownership of properties is easier there than in some other states.” A report from McClatchy found this:
Buyers connected to Russia or former Soviet republics made 86 all-cash sales — totaling nearly $109 million — at 10 Trump-branded properties in South Florida and New York City, according to a new analysis shared with McClatchy. Many of them made purchases using shell companies designed to obscure their identities.
As with the Reuters report, this analysis would only include those where the buyer was traceable, suggesting that the total is probably incomplete. But it is worth noting that these were “all-cash sales,” which turn illegally earned cash into a legitimate asset for the buyer.
The picture all of this paints is of a U.S. president who is knee-deep in laundered Russian money from a system that Putin and his kleptocratic friends have a strong interest in protecting. Perhaps that is why, as Natasha Bertand explained, Donald Trump seems to be trying to rid the government of experts in Russian money laundering.

There are astronauts in Texas who will testify that the Earth is round, having seen it from the International Space Station (ISS). Newspapers implicitly cover that spherical Earth theory every time astronauts go to or from the ISS. Does that change the minds of Flat Earthers? It does not.
Similarly, Trump is crook is as easy to understand as the Earth is a globe. You don’t have to go to the ISS or work closely with Trump to know these things. The news covers Trump all the time. But Trump lovers fundamentally misunderstand Trump and do not change their minds about him.
6ix, you have never been to the Space Station to see the spherical Earth and you never seen a rich liar/crook/conman up close with Trump-ish characteristics and never had to deal with them but there are dozens of them in Texas, one of them in the White House, and they are easy to understand for what they are.

The Enron accounting scandal was publicized in October 2001. Ken Lay was revealed as a huge liar because of a recession. He had always been a liar, but now even the most gullible Enron stock owners realized they had been cheated. The least gullible (me, for one) had sold their Enron shares in the year 2000. Enron stock price goes from $90.75 per share in mid-2000 to less than $1 by the end of November 2001. Ken Lay goes into retirement. In the background, his lawyers are working while he has a carefree life since he sold his shares before the crash.
The Ken Lay trial began January 30, 2006. This is an open-and-shut case, yet four years pass before the trial starts.
The jury reached its verdict on May 25, 2006, convicting Ken Lay. His lawyers will appeal, explaining that he is completely innocent and that it is the Enron accountants who are the real crooks. Trump will similarly be blaming his subordinates.
Ken Lay died from a heart attack on July 5, 2006, before he was sentenced, and his convictions were vacated on October 17, 2006, meaning the convictions never happened.
See? This is American justice. All that trouble, years of litigation, and the result is nothing at all is accomplished about Ken Lay. The same could happen to Trump. He delays and delays some more, then he dies, and its as if he never did a wrong thing in his life, at least as far as the American legal system is concerned.

Ken Lay could have settled the case with prosecutors by paying a fine and would not have even gone to trial except wealthy people lost $billions on Enron stock. They were angry. They wanted prosecutors to punish Ken Lay. Nobody is losing their investment because of Trump. There isn't that motivation to place Trump on trial. So what does a cornered Trump do? For starters, he raises the specter of violence against his political opponents.
In an interview with Breitbart News published on Wednesday, Trump noted: “I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump – I have the tough people, but they don’t play it tough – until they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad.”
In case you missed it, “they” are Trump’s political opponents, including House Democrats and the mainstream media. And the “certain point” could be impeachment but is more likely to be reached if the House investigations reveal crimes Trump committed both before and after he became president.
“I actually think that the people on the right are tougher,” Trump warned in the same interview. “But the left plays it cuter and tougher. Like with all the nonsense that they do in Congress ... with all this invest[igations] – that’s all they want to do is – you know, they do things that are nasty.”
Here we have it, in a nutshell. In Trump’s mind, congressional investigations that could cause him shame and humiliation, and quite possibly result in a prison sentence, will be countered by forces loyal to him: the police, the military, and vigilante groups like Bikers for Trump.
To put it another way, the work of a democratically elected Congress will be met by Trump loyalists who, he asserts, are “tougher” because they have brute force on their side.

For as long as Trump is not convicted of a crime by Mueller, the GOP can pretend there is nothing damaging in a future Mueller report. Since Mueller doesn't even have the authority to arrest Trump like he did Roger Stone or Paul Manafort, Mueller cannot get Trump in court. There will be no trial until Trump is a civilian. Then the law can hammer Trump into an early grave unless Trump pardons himself on his way out. Then Trump's lawyers will argue that the pardon is valid, and many years will pass before a GOP controlled Supreme Court says that it is valid in a vote of 5 to 4.
Trump will get off scot-free. The Mueller report will only raise Trump's legal bills in retirement by a few million per year. That's nothing to a multi-billionaire. Today's Trump lovers will love him until he dies, without regard to what is in the Mueller report. Trump will grow ever richer from their love of him and his brand. He will easily afford the very best lawyers to keep him out of jail.

If Rupert Murdoch, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, and so on collectively decide that Trump is too damaged by whatever comes of the Mueller report and other criminal inquiries to survive, they can easily turn Trump’s base against him.
Trump knows this at some level. He can also see that at least some Republicans in the Senate are growing increasingly rebellious, having rejected both his border emergency gambit and his support for the Saudi war in Yemen. After the Mueller report comes out, it is difficult to imagine even McConnell’s squad of cynical GOP senators staying fully united behind Trump.
So, as defections begin to mount, will Trump choose to try to intimidate his Senate allies with fear of reprisals? Or will he be conciliatory and try to cooperate with them on their priorities in exchange for their loyalty?
So far, the answer appears to be the former. That’s in keeping with the hard-nosed negotiating strategy Trump has used his entire life. He tried and failed to cajole senators for the emergency declaration, and Saturday’s odious tweet attacking the late Senator John McCain over the Steele dossier can only be read as a threat against current senators who cross him over the report.
Trump may survive all this. He may even win re-election. But even so, chances are slim that his usual tactics of intimidation will carry the day. He needs allies in the Senate, and attempting to browbeat them into submission may prove his final undoing.
But that’s his choice to make.

From where Trump is sitting, the lower 99% look seriously stupid, and god won't be punishing Trump or me, despite what you might hope happens. Either the lower 99% of people do it or it won't get done. (I'm confident that the top 10% won't try because they hope someday to be 1 Percenters.)
