An AU look at the Firefly 'verse. Takes place after the series is over, but there's no BDM. Life takes on a new meaning now that there are children aboard the boat.

CATEGORY: FICTION    TIMES READ: 2039    RATING: 9    SERIES: FIREFLY

The first chapter in a hopefully many parted series. I'm planning on about five chapters in this installment and there will be many more installments to come. Pairings(not all in this chapter, but this is what it will be throughout the series): Simon/Kaylee, Mal/Inara, Wash/Zoe (no Jayne/anybody, ever, but will have River/OC much later on)

What?!

Zoe was having a bad day. She had slept in, gotten yelled at by the Captain, threw up everything she had eaten in the past few weeks, and fell asleep on the bridge next to Wash while she was supposed to be navigating him through a field of asteroids. He almost crashed them without her keen eyes and Mal decided that it would be a good idea to scream at her again. And this all happened before lunch. At lunch, she ended up losing her appetite and gave her food to Wash, who shoved it down greedily- and disgustingly. During that time, while she watched everyone else eat, wondered what had happened to her period. It had been a month and a half since her last one, and it worried her. She resolved on swallowing her pride and cornering Simon right after lunch. She would have pulled him away then because she felt another wave of nausea coming on, but he looked to happy. A not-so-rare smile spread across his face, he laughed with Kaylee as she playfully poked him with her fork. He had loosened up since they got together, since he finally mustered up the courage to ask her on a “date.” It hadn't ended up being much of one, seeing as Mal didn't allow them to go off ship on that world. But, as the story went (according to Jayne, who had spied on the conversation), Mal took one look at “that pathetic little puppy look” in Simon's eyes and gave in. A few minutes later, the power shorted out for a second, causing Kaylee to roll her eyes, give Simon a kiss on the cheek, and flounce out of the room while saying, “I'm on it, Cap'n. Don' you worry.” They all returned to their meals without worry; Serenity was in need of some new fancy part (a fuse box, according to Kaylee) and the power kept going out for brief seconds. She always went to check, though, to make sure it was just the fuse box. “Why's it always doin' that?” Jayne grumbled. “Jayne, it don't really matter-” Mal cut himself off with a laugh. Jayne was holding his spoon by his chin and had some of their lunch slop splattered across his shirt. The rest of the crew joined in with laughter. “Do you need a bib?” Wash joked. “Ha, ha, very funny, guys,” Jayne muttered. “Why don't y'all shut up?” He turned to Mal. “Ain't we got somethin' to do to keep all this attention off o' me?” “Actually, he's right,” Mal answered. He stood up, plate in hand. “Crew, get back to takin' inventory. Chow's over.” As Simon returned his plate to the sink, Zoe saw this as her opportunity to pounce. She grabbed him by the arm and dragged him into the hallway by the crew quarters. “Doc, I need to talk to you,” she said, all business as she released him. “Yeah, sure,” Simon murmured, rubbing the spot on his arm where her vice-like grip had been moments before. “What's up?” She shrugged, not letting her concern show. “I'm just not feeling well is all. I wanted a check-up to make sure I'm alright.” Simon smirked at her. “That's what I'm here for. Let's go.” He led her down to the infirmary, with her lagging behind more and more each step. He observed this and made a mental note of it. “So what are the symptoms?” he asked, fiddling around with some basic medical tools as she sat down on the bed. “I slept in this morning,” she began. “Everyone's allowed a bad day,” Simon said, turning around with a few needles and syringes. Zoe shook her head. “On my bad days, I get up earlier, not later. Plus, I fell asleep on the bridge, too.” Simon chuckled a bit. “I heard about that.” “You laugh again, I shoot your head off.” “Sorry about that.” Simon quit laughing. “So anything, ah, else?” “I threw up for about twenty minutes this morning,” she added. Simon had a smile crinkling the corners of his mouth, but he kept it down. “This question here is kind of personal, but trust me when I say it goes no farther than a doctor-patient relationship. Did you skip a period?” Zoe stared up at him in shock. Was he psychic, like River? Or the more rational explanation- she was sick and was probably going to die. She put on a calm and collected face. “I think so. I haven't had one in a month and a half.” Simon smiled again, a goofy smile almost rivaling one of Wash's. “I think Wash wants to be here for this.” He stepped over to the intercom and pressed the button down. “Hey, Wash?” “Yeah, Simon?” Wash's voice came back crackly through the awful speaker. “You aren't doing anything inappropriate with my wife down there, are you?” “No,” Simon sighed, slightly annoyed with Wash's protectiveness. “I do need you down here, though. I've got something to say that you might want to hear.” “Coming.” The comm barely clicked off before they heard the clunk of Wash's boots run faster down the halls than either of them had ever heard. When it came to his wife, he didn't mess around. Zoe surveyed Simon as he injected her with a needle. He drew a bit of blood and stuck it in a vial, mixing it with some chemical that made the blood turn ice blue. All the while, he was smiling. Zoe figured that it couldn't be anything bad if it was making Doc so happy. Wash thundered in through the doors and into the sterile environment. He rushed over to hold Zoe's hand as he stared bravely at Simon. “What is it, Simon? Is she gonna die? Tell me now, I can take it.” Simon laughed lightly. “No, this is very good news. Best news in the 'verse,” he told them. He let the anticipation build for a moment before he blurted out the good news, “In a little less than nine months, you two are going to be proud parents.” Zoe's eyes popped open wide and Wash gave one of his trademark “I don't get it” faces. “So does this mean Zoe's gonna have a baby?” he babbled. “Or are we getting a space monkey?” “A baby,” Simon confirmed. “A human baby,” he added after seeing Wash open his mouth again. “Wow,” Zoe breathed. “Wash, baby, you ready for this?” “Most certainly,” he said, leaning down and giving her a kiss. Simon smiled down on the happy scene, praying that one day this would be happening to him and Kaylee.

Wow if they had a spacemonkey then who would be the daddy? Jayne? since he's a man ape gone wrong thing. And I think Kaylee isn't really fixing the lighting problem just so she can get kisses from Simon.
