SWEDISHMYSTERY

Sketch - Mal Reynolds
Monday, April 30, 2007

Inspired by the comic "Serenity - Those Left Behind", I wanted to try to draw some of the characters of Firefly. I started by tracing some photographs and realized that it was very hard to make the characters look like themselves. It was impossible with just outlines - I needed some kind of shading to get them look somewhat ok. You see the result here... I know it's just a traced sketch which is a big no no in some artistic circles but for me it's a start.

Those are really good! I know you traced the outlines, but the shading is really good! I especially like the image of Mal in the top right. You should absolutely try drawing the characters without tracing - I think with enough practice you could get them pretty much perfect!

Oh pertyful!
Tracing is fine as a place to start so no problems there. And nice shading. You didn't trace that.

I especially like the dark Mal on the lower left the shading looks very difficult.

i think the dark one on the lower left captures his expression the best. although that one on the upper left has a great underhanded smirk to it that i nearly missed on first glance.

keep drawing. brilliance will emerge suddenly and swiftly when your hands start moving independently of coherent thought.

Thank you :)

Even though tracing is something I'm alittle bit ashamed of I still incredibly fun doing it. Eventually I will try to draw Mal free hand which probably will be more sketchy, not as much detailed as this. Right now I just want to get to know his face.

The final portrait in this series for now. Now this guy is so thankful to draw. I love his face! Older people are more interesting and easier to draw because their faces usually have more character and more to work with in general. / Sketch traced after screencap in Photoshop. I made another (traced) sketch. I was bored and felt I needed to do something with a little contrast and color.
