“Zoe!” Zoe snapped out of her daze and looked up at Jayne standing in the hatchway of the kitchen. “You alright there?” Zoe nodded, stabbing at a stray raisin on the table with her fork and chewing it thoughtfully. “Yeah.” Jayne swung himself behind the bench, flicking on the kettle and shuffling through tins. “You wanna cup of somethin’ hot?” “No thanks.” Jayne shrugged and snatched up a mug, sniffing at it, before pouring in his tea. “Suit yourself.” There was a moment of silence except for the boiling of the kettle. “Hey Zoe?” “Yes Jayne?” “What were she like?” “Who, Jayne?” Jayne grinned crookedly. “Who d’ya reckon Zoe? Fast Dash!” “Why do you wanna know?” Jayne paused for a moment. “Well, we’re gonna be rescuing her ain’t we? And she might wanna take over from River as pilot right?” Zoe nodded. “Well I just wanna know what we’re getting into if we brought her on board.” Zoe smiled at him, “Fair enough. You’d like Dash. She was tough as army boots and as slick as there was. Doubt she’s changed much.” Jayne grinned like a wolf, “I saw her in a promotions Zine once. One of those things that they used to put out to attract people to one side or the other. Girls in Uniform. I mean they were some fine pictures. Mighty fine.” He gazed off into nothing, enjoying the memory. “Ah yeah, the Girls in Uniform Zine. I remember that one.” Zoe had a small smile on her face. Jayne stared at her suspiciously for a moment, then his mouth dropped slack. “You weren’t... I mean you didn’t…?” Zoe laughed, “Pose? In the Girls in Uniform Zine? No, Jayne I didn’t. I was asked though. We’d just come out of fighting on Durin, a speck of nowhere moon. I wasn’t in the mood. Nearly broke the man’s arm who asked me, would have if Mal had hauled me off him. Shoulda seen the look on the sleazesnake’s face, it was, well lot like you look now, smatter o fact.” Jayne’s wolfish grin dropped away as he realised what he was doing. Zoe continued, “Should ask the Cap’n about it though. He was in one, in his younger days.” Jayne gaped, “Mal? Mal! Mal was in Girls in Uniform?” “There was a version for the ladies, Jayne. Guys in Uniform. Mal said he lost a bet in Basic and had to go in it. When he joined our unit we plastered his entire tent with the pictures.” Zoe chuckled at the memory, lost in it. Jayne laughed out loud, slapping the table, “Oh boy! Whadda turn in developments! Mal ain’t never gonna hear the end of this one!” “I don’t think you better say a word ‘bout it. Mal just might shot the both of us. Then I’d shoot you as well, just for getting’ me shot.” Jayne’s grin faded as he saw the look in Zoe’s eyes, the cold steel behind her gaze. “Aww c’mon Zoe. You wouldn’t-” Zoe gave him a dangerous half smile, “Try me.”
