After a job goes bad, Simon discovers that there is a power in the 'verse that can stop Kaylee from being cheerful. Next part in my series, Simon/Kaylee, NC-17, yada yada.

Author's note: I'm putting out a request to all my readers for plot bunnies, prompts, ideas, whatever you wanna call 'em. If I use your idea, I'll give you credit when I write the fic. If I don't use your idea...well, write it yourself! We need more people writing S/K smut, after all. ;)

Simon could think of worse ways to wake up.

Hell, he'd experienced a number of them in ten months aboard Serenity. Alarms. Screaming. The ship listing to one side suddenly and violently and tossing him right out of his bed. And on one memorable occasion, Jayne marching into his room and dumping a bucket of ice water over his head.

He couldn't, however, think of a single better way to wake up. He bit back a groan as he reached down and slid his hands into Kaylee's hair, still not convinced he wasn't dreaming. The entire last two months with her seemed like a dream sometimes.

Kaylee moaned softly, then hummed a little, and felt Simon push up against her slightly in response. She took him deeper into her mouth, wrapping one hand around the base of his cock and squeezing gently. She pulled back so her lips were just resting on the tip, then slid back down over him, stroking him with her tongue as she went. He was so close to losing control, she could feel him trembling. But he was holding back, and she decided that just wouldn't do. Sucking harder, she grazed his skin with her teeth. He shouted and thrust up into her mouth, unable to hold himself still. Kaylee giggled, not minding at all.

"Oh, fuck..." Simon moaned. "Oh, God, Kaylee...I'm gonna..." Coherent speech became a distant memory as her mouth closed over him once more and he came so hard he could have sworn he blacked out for a few seconds. Kaylee didn't release him until he was done, then carefully cleaned him off with her tongue before crawling up his body and stretching out lazily on his chest, arching her back a little and smiling at him. "You look like the cat that got the cream."

Kaylee raised her eyebrows at his choice of words, and he blushed. "I made you cuss." She told him proudly.

"Hmm. Yeah, well done." Simon chuckled, running one hand down her back. "Guess now I get to try." He grabbed her around her waist and flipped them over, pinning her under him. He took a moment to enjoy the way she looked, flushed and panting with arousal, her hair spread out on the pillow and her eyes shining up at him, then kissed her softly before moving down her body, pausing to lick and suck at her breasts, loving the way she gasped and dug her nails into his shoulders.

When he was between her thighs, he waited, just long enough for her to get impatient and start to whimper and move her hips. He couldn't wait any longer anyway, and he lowered his head and pressed his lips against her center, teasing her with the tip of his tongue a little before pressing it into her, groaning. She was so wet, and he could taste himself on her from the night before, when he had come inside her several times before they'd both practically passed out, completely spent. Where Kaylee was concerned, he had a primative streak, and he loved the thought of branding her, marking her as his own.

It worked both ways, of course. He belonged to her completely, and he loved that, too.

Kaylee dug her hands into his hair and began pushing herself against his mouth. She kept moaning out his name, and that was something he still couldn't get his mind around. Kaylee was saying his name, begging him not to stop, wanting him. Whatever higher power it was that had brought her to him had a lifelong follower. And so did Kaylee. He would do anything to keep her by his side, to make her happy.

She started chanting his name faster, trailing off into a scream as he slid two fingers inside her, pressing on just the right spot as his lips pulled at her clit, pushing her right off the edge. He felt her muscles spasm and tasted a new rush of wetness that he quickly caught with his tongue, stroking her gently until she collapsed back on the bed, shaking and gasping for air.

Simon lay his head on her hip, absently pressing his lips against her abdomen. He felt her tense. "Something wrong?"

"No, nothing." Kaylee said.

"Are you sure?" Simon asked, moving up beside her and gently caressing her cheek. "Kaylee, what is it?"

"I'm okay." Kaylee insisted. "I just...I don't want you to go on this job."

"I'll be all right." Simon promised. "Really. I'll be with the captain, and he knows what you'll do to him if anything happens to me, so don't worry."

Kaylee smiled. "Yeah, that's true." She sat up and kissed him. "You better get going, before he comes lookin' for you, or worse, sends Jayne. You know he'll be bring that damned bucket with him."

"Can't have that." Simon chuckled. "You got a lot of work to do while we're gone?" Kaylee shook her head. "Good, then stay here and get some rest, doctor's orders. You look really tired."

"I wonder why that is." Kaylee teased. She watched him get dressed, wrapping the sheet loosely around her body.

Simon walked back over to the bed, gathered her up in his arms, and kissed her soundly. "I'll see you in a couple hours."

"Be careful." She replied.

"I promise." Simon kissed her once more before he left. Something was definitely bothering Kaylee. But he knew her well enough to know that he shouldn't push her. If it was important, she would tell him when she was ready, she always did.

As soon as he was gone, Kaylee let herself slump back against the wall, drawing her knees up to her chest. She cursed herself for getting so emotional. But she couldn't shake the feeling that something was very wrong. ___________________

"Put this on." River said casually as she walked by Simon in the cargo bay.

"Armor?" Simon held up the deceptively thin, light garment his sister had handed to him. "River, I don't need this. I'm not even going to have a gun, I'm the diversion."

"Even if there is shooting on this job, he won't be anywhere near it." Mal added. "Don't worry, little one. He'll be fine."

"Yes, he will." River agreed. "Because he's going to wear it."

Mal and Simon exchanged looks. "Well, she's the reader." Simon conceded.

"Hell, Doc, just put it on. We gotta get going." Mal said, waving his hands dismissively. _______________

"Just as I thought. It's a minor ear infection." Simon told the mother of the little boy sitting in front of him. "It's more commonly called 'swimmer's ear,' he's got water in his inner ear. Should be fine in a couple of days, just keep him out of the pond until it works itself out."

"Thank you, doctor." The young woman seemed so genuinely grateful, and Simon couldn't help but wonder when the last time was that this settlement had seen an actual doctor, rather than just the obvious con man who called himself a faith healer, preying on peoples' beliefs and ignorance.

Mal had been right, it seemed like most of the village had shown up, leaving the trade station nearly deserted. He, Jayne, and Zoe would be able to clean out the vault without too much fuss. That was what Mal had said, anyway. Simon knew better than to put too much stock in what the captain said, at least when it came to how a job was going to go.

Gunfire erupted outside the small clinic at that moment, seemingly proving his point. _________________

River suddenly sat up straight, gasping softly.

"What's wrong, honey?" Kaylee asked, setting down the plate she'd brought up to the bridge for her friend.

"They're coming back." River said. "Coming back in a hurry."

"Is everything all right?" Kaylee couldn't help but be concerned, the girl was talking quickly, softly, the way she used to. "Why are they coming back quick?"

"Get the door." River told her without turning around.

Kaylee felt like her heart was going to pound right through her chest as she raced down the cargo bay. She reached the panel and hit the button to open the door. Moments later, the Mule pulled into the cargo bay and screeched to a halt.

"What happened?" She asked, pulling herself up to peer into the vehicle. "Oh my God, Simon!" __________________

He moved down the corridor slowly, hobbled somewhat by the lingering dull pain in the right side of his chest and in his shoulder. Despite his attempts to reassure her, she'd bolted from the cargo bay in tears shortly after he and the others had returned. Now he just wanted to find her and comfort her as best he could.

"Kaylee?" He called, knocking on the door to his room. Somehow, he had a feeling she was in there, rather than her own room.

"Ching jin." She called. When he opened the door, she looked up at him and smiled. "Hey, feeling better?"

"I'm fine." Simon replied, crossing the room to sit beside her on the bed. "I'm going to feel like I got kicked by a mule for a couple days, but speaking from experience, it could hurt a lot worse. If it weren't for River telling me to wear that armor under my shirt-"

"Don't." Kaylee interrupted, louder and sharper than she'd meant to sound. "Don't say it, I know what would have happened. You would have been...I would have lost you."

"You didn't, though." Simon put his arms loosely around her and kissed her. "I'm here."

Kaylee carefully pushed aside the collar of his shirt, sucking in a deep breath when she saw the edges of the bruise.

"I'm fine." He repeated. "Just a little...colorful."

"A little?" Kaylee said, still staring. "Simon, don't act like this were nothing. You got shot."

Simon placed his fingers against her lips. "I know, baobei." He let his hands slide down to her shoulders, rubbing gently, pressing a little firmer on spots that felt tense.

Kaylee sighed, leaning into him. "That feels real good. But you shouldn't, I should be taking care of you."

"You do." He said. "You take care of everyone on this ship, one way or another. You keep us from breaking down, you make us laugh, every single day. But you don't have to keep it up all the time. You can't, Kaylee. You deserve to feel scared or upset sometimes, and to show it, just like anyone else."

As he spoke, she laid her head on his shoulder, weeping softly. He just held her and let her cry for a few minutes, sliding one hand under her shirt and rubbing up and down her back. When her sobs died down, he kissed her forehead gently, then cupped her chin and tilted her face up to brush a tear off her cheek.

"I keep telling myself you're all right." Kaylee admitted. "But no matter how hard I try, I can't stop thinking about how I could have lost you."

"You didn't. You won't." Simon kissed her softly. "Kaylee, I will never-"

"Don't." She interrupted. "Simon, don't make me a promise you might not be able to keep."

"You're right. I'm sorry." He said. "I can promise you this much, though, I will never leave you willingly, not without putting up one hell of a fight. Not after it took so long for us to be together like this, and not after everything we've been through together." He kissed her again. "Kaylee, I love you. I want to be with you for the rest of my life, and I plan on that being a very long time."

"Yeah?" Kaylee's demeanor brightened considerably. "You been giving it a lot of thought?"

Simon grinned sheepishly. "Well, now that I'm not spending most of my time making sure that my sister doesn't blow up the ship, I've had a lot of time to think."

"About what?" Kaylee pressed. Her fear started to fade as she listened to him.

"The future. Our future." Simon explained, taking one of her hands in both of his. "There's no one else in the 'verse I can even imagine spending the rest of my life with, however long that might be. I think about marrying you...having a family with you." He stopped when he saw her eyes widen. "I mean, if that's what you want."

"Well, not just yet." Kaylee giggled. "Though I do think you and me would have some really pretty babies. But I want you all to myself for a while, first."

"You've got me." Simon whispered. He pulled her onto his lap, holding her tightly against him.

Kaylee gasped when she felt him press into her thigh. She made a half-hearted effort to pull away when he started cupping her breasts and kissing her neck. "Simon, you sure that's a good idea? I don't want to hurt you."

"You won't." Simon held her closer. "Trust me, I'm fine."

His kisses reassured her, and she let herself get lost in him. She unbuttoned his shirt and pushed it off of his shoulders, wincing when she saw the bruise again, then gently touched her lips right to the center of it, freezing when she felt him tense. "Did that hurt?"

"No." Simon insisted. "I told you, you won't hurt me." He lay back on the bed, pulling her with him so she was straddling his hips. "I'm scared too, Kaylee. I was scared today. Scared of dying without seeing you again, holding you. It's not dying that I'm afraid of, it's losing you, or letting you down, or hurting you-"

Kaylee pressed a finger to his lips. "You could never hurt me, Simon, not on purpose. I know that now. I know you." She let her hands trail down to the waistband of his gray pajama pants and slowly pulled them down. Then she stood up and removed her own clothing, aware that he was watching her, purposely drawing out every movement, until she could hear him groaning softly.

"You are so incredible." Simon murmured reverently, reaching out to her. "So beautiful."

"You're pretty...pretty yourself." Kaylee teased. She moved back over him, feeling her body tighten with anticpation.

"Are you ever gonna forget that?" Simon asked, sliding his hands from her shoulders to her waist, ignoring the ache in his right shoulder.

"Hmm. Nope." Kaylee replied. "You're welcome to try and make me forget, though."

"Wonder how I could do that..." Simon mused, slipping on hand down from her hip, between her thighs. He sucked in a deep breath. It still blew his mind every time he touched her like this, how much she wanted him. Holding her hip, he guided her down over him so he was pressed right against her, then waited.

Moaning softly, Kaylee leaned back, supporting herself on her hands, and started to sink down. She closed her eyes and just listened to Simon's groans as he watched his cock slide into her, just felt him stretching and filling her. Panting heavily, she waited for a minute, adjusting to the heat and fullness inside her. Then she started rolling her hips, slowly at first, then picking up speed.

"Kaylee..." Simon managed to say as he pressed one hand against the small of her back. "Open your eyes, xin gan. Look at me." She did, and he moved his other hand up to cup her cheek. "I love you."

"I love you, too." Kaylee gasped out. She cried out as he moved under her, pushing up just as she thrust down. He did it again and she bit her lip to keep from screaming. "Simon, it's...I can't..." She was already close, and when she felt his thumb rub against her clit, she gave up and wailed out his name once more before her orgasm tore through her, knocking the air out of her lungs.

Simon waited until she was done, until her body stopped clenching around him and she stopped shaking. He was close, too, but he wasn't done with her yet. Holding her hips gently, but firmly enough to keep her still, he started thrusting up into her, well aware that she was still tight and sensitive from her release, loving the way she spasmed around him with every movement. Just when he couldn't hold off for another second, he heard her moan and felt her squeeze tight around him, and he followed her quickly, barely managing to say her name as he pushed up once more and came hard, flooding her with his warmth.

When he opened his eyes a minute later, he saw her still over him, panting and whimpering. She had slumped against the wall instead of collapsing on top of him, and it touched him to realize that she was still trying to avoid hurting him. Whispering her name, he slid his arms around her and carefully guided her down to lie next to him, turning on his side to face her.

"How's your..." Kaylee trailed off and gestured to the bruise, still a little too dazed to speak. Simon smiled, thinking that she looked so adorable like that.

"It's fine. I forgot all about it." He said truthfully, placing a soft kiss on her forehead. "Thank you."

Kaylee laughed breathlessly. "Glad to help."

OTHER FANFICS BY AUTHOR

Out of The Frying Pan: Where We Left Off
Does anyone remember this fic? Well, just in case, here's a brief summary of the story so far, really just to see if there's any interest in me continuing it...

Out of the Frying Pan: Ch. 6
The crew meets the new passenger, and a dream spurs Simon and Kaylee to take a surprising step. No smut in this one, either. Saving it all up for the next chapter...

Out of the Frying Pan: Ch. 5
Surgery! Flashbacks! Mind-reading! Simon gets punched! Oh, just read the freakin' thing. Features a bit of non-graphic (gasp!) Simon/Kaylee lovin', so I'm rating it R just to be on the safe side. See, folks? Fair warning.

Out of the Frying Pan: Ch. 4
Simon broods, Kaylee does her best to help, and Simon and Jayne find an appropriately dysfunctional way to communicate. Another transitional chapter, mostly Simon/Kaylee smut with a few hints of plot. Very NC-17, you've been warned.

Out of the Frying Pan: Ch. 3
The crew arrives on Bayou, meets up with an "old friend," and gets more answers than they really wanted. Simon/Kaylee, embarassingly PG. Next chapter will be a return to the smut, I promise.

Out of the Frying Pan: Ch. 2
Simon and Kaylee's wedding has to be postponed when the crew decides to head to Bayou. Simon/Kaylee, Mal/Inara, NC-17. I SWORE this chapter wasn't going to have any porn in it, but certain people protested. Not gonna name names. You know who you are. ;P

Out of the Frying Pan: Ch. 1
A continuation of the Motivation Series. After Miranda, the warrants for Simon and River were revoked, and the crew thought they were safe. Turns out? Not so much! Simon/Kaylee, NC-17. Yes, that's right, porn WITH plot...or is it plot with porn...eh, just read it!

Motivation Series 30: Past Tense (repost)
That's right, I will continue to delete and repost this fic until that troll gets the message: You can't beat me! Simon/Kaylee, NC-17. The final chapter in this particular series, more of a transitional one.

Motivation Series 29: Dream On (Part 2 of 2)
Kaylee watches Simon sleep and gets an idea. NC-17, not for kids or prudes. This one was demanded by Piffle101, so if it sucks, it's all her fault. *wink* And remember, there's a special hell for people who don't comment...

Motivation Series 29: Dream On
Simon and Kaylee get a few days off, but everything is not as it seems...(Simon/Kaylee, NC-17, duh.)
