Chapter Ten: “Zoë’s Captain?”

The next morning the Captain was surprised that everyone was at breakfast when he sat at the table. He became more suspicious when no one was eating, not even Jayne.

Zoë reports. “Sir, I do believe we have found a buyer for the ship.”

“My, now that was fast.” Mal says a he scoops up some powered eggs on to his plate.

“Yes sir, actually…um” Zoë says as she look around the table for encouragement. “I though I try my hand at captaining.” This last part could have used a little more confidence.

“Cute Zoë, but I don’t think this is gonna work.” Mal wasn’t buying that Zoë really wanted to be a captain a bit.

“Actually not my ideal, Mal.” He notices right away that Zoë addressed him in front of the whole crew as “Mal”.

“Really, what do I have here? Hmm…a mutiny. I wonder who could be behind this.” The Captain was going to try and have a little fun with this. “Let’s see here. Not the every faithful Zoë. No…not her. Hmm, Jayne? No, not Jayne. He can’t hold a gun to all your heads at the same time.” Jayne grunted a laugh as he though about trying. “Inara no, I don’t think so, what would she need with this old ship. Kaylee no, not Kaylee she loves her Captain. Let’s see that leaves our medical and criminal mastermind and his mind reading sister…You have any thing to say for your self, Doc.”

“Well...ahh…I…” Simon was a little less sure of the plan now that he was being directly confronted by Mal. “…Well we…” He motions around the table at the rest of the crew. “...um don’t want to go.”

“I see that’s the case.” The Captain then glares down at Zoë. “Had to tell them. Huh.”

Zoë tries to deflect some of the blame. “Actually the mind reader let the cat out of the bag, Sir.” It’s back to ‘SIR’ now.

“Me and you need to have a little talk, Albatross.” Mal says with a pointing motion between him and River.

River corrects him sarcastically. “You mean, you and me?”

“Ain’t that what I said.” Mal says knowing he should have never tried to trick a crew with a psychic on board. “Where I am going there is no coin in it for you, and no clients left for you.” Mal directs the first part to Jayne and the second half at Inara.

Kaylee speaks her first words of this fine morning. “But plan B is shiny, Captain.”

“Well then, did River leave me anything to tell yaw, or are all of you asking me to leave?” Mal said almost jokingly.

River comes back with. “No Captain, I just told them that were are going to Robin Hood. You know, steal from the rich and give to the poor.”

“No Albatross, sell to the poor at a substantial discount.” Mal says looking down his nose and holding up his index finer.
