Epilog: “He was the only One”

Zoë walks on to the bridge to find River sitting in the co-pilots chair. Only the captain has sat in Wash’s chair since that day.

After a few tense minutes River says. “You want to know…know why…Wash.” Never looking away from the stars beyond.

“Yeah.” Zoë chooses to be terse.

“He was the only one. The only person on this ship that at one time or another didn’t think that maybe, just maybe, I needed to be put down.” River was speaking softly but not soft enough to hide her sadness.

“No! Your brother, Book you can’t be serious.” Zoë really didn’t believe her.

“Yep!” River said with a small nod. “Also if your going to program an auto-pilot you might as well start with the best pilot you ever met.” River doesn’t add that he was the only real pilot she ever met.

Zoë just a little sadly states. “That’s my man, best pilot in the ‘verse.”

“Besides…” River continues. “…Malcolm Hogan Washburn deserves to meet his father.”

Zoë’s hand slips over her belly as a small smile slips across her lips.

Kaylee is yet again in Simon’s dorm.

“Tell me all about them” Kaylee beamed in the after glow.

“About who, bai bao?” Simon says as he smiles at his lover.

“Robin Hood and his merry men.” Kaylee answers with pep.

“Well let’s see…it was at the end of the twelfth century. When good King Richard the First called ‘The Lion Hearted’ led the English in…I think it was the Second or Third Crusade…
