Yay for friday 13th.

My best friday 13th experience was a few years ago, at a FORSAKEN BALL (yes, that's what the Goth Shindigs in adelaide are called) that was a combined friday 13th/valentine's day event.

Edit: I just found this pic that's being used as the header on forums of my old WoW guild, thought I should share it.

My Friday 13th story is way too spooky... oh hang on - no it's not...

My cousin had her first child on Friday 13th May... oh a few years back now... and the rest...

Her sister's first baby was also born on 13th May...

My sister, Trudi's first baby was born on Friday 13th May a few less years ago than my cousins...

How's that then...? Maybe a little spooky?

4.30pm here - but damn - Penguins' tongue still tickles!... meh... Tristan's loss I reckon!

Ok, that is strange! My best friend in elementary school was born on May 13th, a Friday. I didn't think they were that common in May...

Happy Black Friday everyone!!!
13's always been a lucky number in my household, both my parents are born on the 13th and wed on the 13th.
of note, my boss pointed out that this is the 'true' friday the 13th as if you add the numbers in todays date, 13/10/2006 (as we write it in Australia) 1+3+1+2+6=13

Simon: Captain, why did you come back for us?
Mal: You're on my crew.
Simon: Yeah, but you don't even like me. Why'd you come back?
Mal: You're on my crew... Why we still talking about this?

My parents married on the 13th of Feb, but I don't think it was a friday that year.

RIVERISMYGODDESS

Mornin' shiny Forsaken folk, and happy Friday the 13th.

This may be a little long, but here is the history I promised (I hope I can remember all of it, it's been a while since I read anything along these lines [I might look up some names and dates online as I go]). It is not the definite beginning of the unluckiness of the day, but many sources I have read have speculated it to be so.

First, we'll need a little background history of the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, commonly known as the Knights Templar. The Order was founded by Crusade veteran Hughes de Payens and Godfrey de St Omer in or around 1118, supposedly for the protection of pilgrims on the road to and from Jerusalem. There were 9 original members, and they relied mostly on gifts and donations when they were formed. Something interesting to note here is that we are asked to believe that there were only 9 men designated to cover the entire trail from Europe to the Middle East. There is also evidence that the Knights were the militant wing of the secretive Priory of Scion, made famous in the fictional work The Da Vinci Code.

They were given space on the Temple Mount (believed to be above the ruins of the Temple of Solomon) for their headquarters. Soon after occupying this area, they began to excavate to see what they could find below. Research has found that they discovered something, though it is unknown as to what it specifically is, that turned their fortune. This was a very powerful symbol for the Catholic Church and they immediately began to increase in wealth and power. There are disputed claims as to what they found, ranging from evidence that Jesus and Mary Magdalene had children and the blood-line continues today (seen in fictional works like The Da Vinci Code and non-fictional works such as Holy Blood, Holy Grail) to evidence that Jesus and his brother James were keeping alive a secret society that dated back to Ancient Egypt and the original Temple of Solomon, showing that they never intended to start a new religion and that Peter was actually the one who skewed it into that. But I digress.

The Knights were a very powerful force in the 1100-1200s, amassing land and money, and only answering to the authority of the pope. They formed the basis for modern banking, built many castles and churchs, and still owned the vast tracts of land all over Europe.

On to the actual day: King Philip IV of France saw the Templars as both a threat and a way to gain resources for his struggling country. In secret, he sent messages to soldiers loyal to him and the Church from all over France as well as the rest of the continent. These messages were not to be opened until the morning of October 13th, 1307. The messages contained many false claims against the Order, ranging from devil worship, blasphemy, and heresay to sodomy and molestation. Many of the Knights were rounded up and tortured in an attempt to unearth the wealth they possessed, but very little of it was actually found.

The Templar's last Grand Master, Jaques de Molay, continually told the king that he would rather endure the endless torture rather than betray those closest to him, and after multiple attempts of said torture he and 3 others of the Order were burned at the stake.

The unarrested Templars, having their own fleet of ships, disappeared on or very near to Black Friday. There is much speculation as to where they went from there. Some claim the Knights were absorbed by other military and monastic orders. There is evidence that the Templar ships became the first (and most powerful) of the pirate ships, the Jolly Roger (skull and crossbones) being included in both Templar and Masonic symbolism. There is also evidence through physical symbols that the Knights were on the North American continent long before Columbus, the Pilgrims of the Mayflower, or any of the other early European settlers. One final speculation, which seems to hold true to me, is that Templars formed the country of Switzerland, backed up by their similarity in flags and insignia and the proclivity and efficiency of the Swiss banks.

Whew. I could really go on for days and days about the Knights Templar and the factual and fictional history and alleged connections and inspirations, but I think I have already whinged on long enough. For those of you who read all of this, I hope it provided a little insight to the history of this otherwise normal day.

Time to go to the pub, methinks.

Thank you for the history lesson. I'd read about the Templars a lot before and was aware they'd been bumped off, but never associated it with friday the 13th.

Yeah, I got one of those too (the frakin' French one!). And I missed one of those. (the number 13 vs. Friday the 13th.) And it sounds to me like Otis Elevators is not fully committed to its beliefs.

Gotta go with them all there Nico!

The last two were great for laugh effect and the rest just give me those happy childhood memories!

Not to mention the last one was abou 15 years in the making. We talked about that match up as kids every time a new movie came out for either.

Man I truly miss those movies!

I know, I saw we run a marathon in the Pub today!

All Fri the 13 all the time!

I got a 4 out of 8. Not too bad, considering that I didn't think people were that silly (90% of elevators skip/don't have a button for #13, if they have a 13th floor?).
