i love shows that make you laugh so hard at just one line or scene. there are not many shows that do that. in my opinion, most comedies have very formulaic jokes and the laugh tracks can be pretty distracting. anyway, on to my point. i was watching an angel rerun last night (carpe noctem. whatever that means) that i had taped from earlier in the day. there is a scene when cordelia is trying to convince angel to squash fred's high school-like crush on him. their conversation goes:

cordelia: she's got the big puppy love. i mean, who wouldn't? you're handsome, and brave, and heroic, emotionally stunted, erratic, prone to turning evil and, lets face it, a eunuch.

angel: hey, how can you... i'm not a eunuch.

cordelia: angel, it's just a figure of speech.

angel: find a better one.

man. i had to pause the tape because i was laughing so hard. angel's tone of voice and body language is SO ridiculously defensive, as all men can be when our masculinity comes into question. it must be programmed into our collective brains. anyway, i know it is a minor line in a relatively insignificant scene, but it was SO funny to me.

anyone else have moments like this or is it just me?

I have a lot of those moments in Joss shows, mostly Buffy. The likes of "Nothing can defeat the PENIS!" and...

Xander: So, how did the slaying go last night?
Buffy: *Looks around at the other students* Could you speak a little louder?
Xander: Oh! *looks around, and says, loudly* How did the LAYING go last night?

I recently watched The Gift again, and there were two or three moments that I laughed out loud at something I'd forgotten...I've since forgotten them again, except for the one exchange between Giles and Spike, just after Buffy says she'll kill anyone who comes near Dawn, something like:

Spike: Well, not exactly the St. Crispen's Day speech, was it?

Giles: We few, we happy few...

Spike: We band of buggered.

MALICIOUS

I LOVE the ep in (I think) Buffy Season 4, the one where Willow's thoughts/wishes come true and she says Giles is blind and Buffy and Spike should get married. There's a lot of confusion and no one is really communicating, just arguing. At one point, Spike says something like "...and this is the crack team that foils my every plan???" Cracks me up every time.

Also, in that ep, where Zander is checking to see if Giles is really blind and Giles says "Stop whatever you're doing, you smell like fruit roll-ups." His voice is SOOO genuinely irritated!

AND when Zander sees Buffy and Spike kissing and asks if he can be blind too.

Basically, that whole ep is just hilarious.

Sometimes, just for fun, I put in the Angel S1 disc of Cordelia's party where a woman asks Angel to dance and he pictures himself dancing, dorklike, and then says, "I don't dance." His facial expressions while he's dancing are priceless.

And prior to that where Wes is doing HIS dork-dance. Pure hysteria.

Like they said on Seinfeld about Elaine dancing: "It looks like a full-body dry heave."

I love that bit. It's exactly the reason why I don't dance. That's the same way I picture myself dancing. I don't care about ballroom dancing or whatever. Give me a set pattern to follow and I'll go waste time dancing, but make me improvise and it's a solid NO.

I also like Orpheus when Willow is catching up with Wes and just totally out does his low point. Her whole black hair destory the world thing vs. Wes's locking Justine up in the closet.

I took a day of work today and in the afternoon was lucky enough to see the last two episodes of Buffy on Sky One. (I was telly-less and had missed the last series first time round).

There's one hilarious moment the night before the big battle where Giles and Xander are looking over a map. It looks like they're planning but then the camera moves back and Giles rolls a dice and they're playing dungeons and dragons. ROFL.

I think that's one of the worst lines of the series. Go rewatch City Of (and much of S1) - Angel clearly 'knows' about the internet, making the above line something of a shameless continuity slip just for the sake of a cheap joke.

I too laughed till I cried on smile time. Esp when Spike dives on Puppet Angel..such a long way to fall!

I was re-watching season 3 last night and cracked up at this line when Wes is being all aggressive to Fred:
Wes:" Oh, are we standing now? Is that what we're doing?"

I think it was scary when I saw it the first few times but last night it just seemed hysterical.

I don't remember the Dance of Shame, actually.

I remember the Dance of Joy:
"Numfar, do the Dance of Joy."
*Numfar dances*
"But now you have returned to us. Numfar, no longer do the Dance of Joy."
*Numfar stops dancing*

Then later:
"Thank you Angel. You bring us great honour. Numfar, do the Dance of Honour."
*Numfar dances*

We didn't actually see the dance of shame because Lorne and Angel are leaving the house, but you could hear Lorne's mother yelling at Numfar to do it, then there was a teeny sound effect of the dancing on the floor. ;)

And yes, Joss was Numfar. The story goes Joss came up with the dancing and he showed it to all of the writers when they were working on the Pylea episodes. Everyone was so amused that they dared him to be Numfar. And he did it.

I honestly cannot name all of the funny moments in Angel. In fact, at the moment i can't name any. I seem to be having a complete mental blank. But i laughed my head off at Smile Time, and that scene at the start of Fredless, and seeing Joss (I already knew it was him)to the Dance of Joy just killed me. I actually know someone that had the entire Dance of Joy memorised. Buffy eps such as Tabula Rasa (ssn 6) and Something Blue (ssn 4). Also Hush (ssn 4), the scene in the lecture theatre, had me in tears!!! The expression on Xanders face! Priceless.

Y'all have hit most of my favorites!

I actually haven't watched TV since Babylon 5 ended in '98, just DVDs of shows I hear a lot of great things about.
Only saw Seasons 2 & 3 of Buffy, and the first couple episodes of Angel, and haven't been able to afford the DVDs of either, so I'm reading the transcripts off twiztv.com.
I'm up to the Season 3 of Angel, "Fredless", and I just saw this line...

Trish: "I mean, Rog's always had a thing for those disgusting "Alien" movies with all the slime and teeth. He just can't get enough of 'em. - Except for that last one they made I think he dozed off. - I just can't believe it's all real."

ROTFL! Joss wrote "that last one they made"!

Then there was Angel's fascination with alternate conditions in Pylea...

Angel: "Can everyone just notice how much fire I'm not on?"

Angel: "Let's start gathering some branches, some brush. Anything to cover up the car. Oh, hey, look. There is some over in that patch of sun. I'll get them!"

Angel is looking at himself in the mirror and feeling his hair, trying to push it down.
Angel: "Okay - this is because of going through the portal, right?"
Cordy: "No. It always looks like that."
Angel turns to look at them.
Wesley: "Angel, while we search for the proper incantation, it might save time if you go with the host. Hit the streets, see if you can document any - portal activity."
Angel: "I don't get it."
Wesley: "Well, the host knows this world, we need to ascertain if..."
Angel turns back to the mirror: "No, I mean why didn't anybody tell me about this? Look it's..."
Plays with his hair again.
Cordy: "Uh. You look good."
Angel checking himself out in the mirror again: "You're not just saying that, are you?"

What I find so amazing about the Whedonverse is that there are these little comments about EPIC happenings from way earlier, and it just SMACKS you when you stop and think about it, and the whole backstory comes swimming up into your forebrain, and you have to close your eyes, lean your head back and laugh, Laugh, LAUGH!
Then you open your eyes while you're still facing the ceiling and say, "What a story this is!"

The problem is trying to hook your friends & family into watching... with just the 10-words-or-less they allow you!
