Did anybody else notice Illyria's shrimp comment to Wes regarding the planes she'd traveled to? It seemed so....off. Until I considered that Anya was talking about shrimp in season 4 buffy when attempting to describe alternate realities in the episode Superstar.

Is there a connection between Illyria's comment and Anya's?

Most definately. I believe there is another shrimp reference during the "Lorne's home-dimension" story arc, but not sure.

*goes off to watch DVD's*

Edit: Now I remember! (sort of) There was an episode of Buffy where Halfrek was rambling on about the wishes people have made, and the shrimp universe was one of those she mentioned. (I think, but I haven't slept in 2 days, so I may be experiencing Buffyverse delusions... I've been known to 'remember' episodes that were only fanfics)

One of the worst jokes in the Buffyverse. Just plain ridiculous.

But at least there's continuity. And come on! It's shrimp! The very name of the poor little creature inspires uproarous laughter!

*laughs uproarously*

Anya first made the shrimp comment in "Superstar". Buffy (starting to realize that their 'Jonathan is a hero' world was kind of off) asked Anya about alternate realities. And Anya mentioned crazy melty world or bendy time world (something like that), and World Without Shrimp, then a world with nothing but shrimp.

The second time it was mentioned was Triangle. Willow did a spell to send Olaf to The Land of the Trolls. Anya told Tara that alternate realities don't always stay in the same place, so they could have missed the troll world and sent him to The World Without Shrimp instead. And then Tara had the great line of "There's a world without shrimp? I'm allergic."

I don't recall anything about shrimp mentioned in any of the Pylea episodes or anything that Halfrek said. I'm pretty sure it was only those two Anya scenes and then the Illyria one.

So there's totally a connection between Anya's comments and Illyria's. But probably nothing more than a shout-out to the long-term Jossverse viewers.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

I personally liked the shrimp references.

"Anya: "Sure, alternate realities. You could uh, could have like
a world without shrimp. Or with, you know, nothing but shrimp.

Anya: Say you really like shrimp a lot. Or we
could say you don't like shrimp at all."

[Giles nods but keeps eating.]

Anya: "Blah I wish there weren't any shrimp you would say to
yourself."

Buffy: "Stop you're saying it wrong! I think that Jonathan may
be doing something so that he's manipulating the world and
we're all like his pawns."

Anya: "Or prawns."

Buffy stares at Anya.

Buffy: "Stop with the shrimp I am trying to do something here!"

Much like The Bunnies or Joss' frequent references to goats, I think it works.

There's nothing wrong with ridiculous comments, of course, but I'm saying the idea is ridiculous.

Yes. Now that you've called my attention to it, Joss does continue certain themes, though the purpose of them escapes me.

Anya+bunnies for instance:
1. She raises bunnies as a mortal in her origin story in season 7.

2. She sings about bunnies in OMWF.

3. She summons lots of bunnies in Tabula Rasa when under the amnesia spell.

4. She is inspired by the mention of bunnies in the show's finale to go on a kill crazy rampage against the uber-vamps emerging from the high school basement.

I can't recall any mention of goats in either Angel of Buffy with the exception of angel's misplaced phone call in season 5 when he gets the message: You've reached ritual sacrifice! For goats press 1, or say "goats".

But the larger question for me is to know if there's a serious point to the bunnies, goats, and shrimp or is it just Joss being silly?

Hey! Bonus points for mentioning the phrase "kill crazy rampage"!

Kaylee: "What's so damn important about being proper? It don't mean nothing out here in the black."
Simon: "It means more out here. It's all I have..."

Reservoir Dogs. When Mr. White yells at Mr. Blond.

Honestly I had forgotten where that phase came from. Over time my head fills with many phrases and ways of describing things and as I get older I start to forget where it all comes from.

I had to sit a few seconds and think on that one.

Didn't you guys know that bunnygoat and shrimp is a rival firm of wolfram and hart's? They're not quite as powerful but they're working their way up.

Kinda like ConeyKid and Brine, or PulletRam and Prawn?

I think the point is our pleasure online discussing them...
My own favorite is the cheese:
in Buffy season two 'Bewitched Bothered & Bewildered'
Amy turns Buffy into a rat,
and all Buffy recalls is offering to do the lap-dance for Xander and then a burning need for cheese....

well no one much mentions cheese for almost two years,
but when Riley is asking Willow for tips on what Buffy likes,
Willow says "She likes cheese"
(could that be a hold over from the being a rat experience?)

And then in the Season 4 finale, when everyone is kind of experiencing Buffy's dream w/the Primal Slayer...
and the cheese man (has Buffy been dreaming about the cheese man for years?)

Personally I would have enjoyed more cheesy references,
I always love the bunny references
(and you noticed how bunnies inspired Anya to fight in the series' finale!)

And the shrimp references are similar,
something for those who have been fans for years

In "Reprise", Angel crashes a warehouse where some W&H lackeys (one of them played by writer David Fury) are attempting to sacrifice hundreds of goats.

"That's a lot of goats. Goats. Many."

FREDIKAYLLOW

i love the whole shrimp thing!!! i would have laughed out really loud when Illyria mentioned shrimp, cept i was so sad at the loss of Fred. of course, the reference to shrimp in 'Triangle' kinda had me lost, because i hadn't seen 'Superstar' yet at tht stage. then when i saw 'Superstar' i burst out laughing. anyway, like i said, i just think the whole shrimp thing is so funny because the fact that they chose shrimp as a reference, rather than something slightly more orthodox- like, say, people?? i don't know.

Also, in "Fear Itself" (the halloween one with Gachnar, the mini-demon), she dresses up as a bunny, because bunnies frighten her.

OMG, she does dress up doesn't she? I never made the connection between her costume and the fact she might be afraid of bunnies. (Or at least cautious).

Yeah, Zander tells her to dress up as something scary, so...

(Hence his crack later about her costume...)
