EMBERS

I was watching the end of Ats S4 last night, and the final episode had a very good commentary which said that they (the writers) had trouble really isolating what Angel's metaphor was....
in Buffy, particularly at the beginning it was easy: High School is Hell.

But it wasn't until the end of Angel's season 4, when they came up with the idea of moving Angel & company to run Wolfram & Hart that they kind of realized that the real metaphor of young adults has to do with necessary compromise.

That a young adult must get a job and compromise their freedom, their creativity, & their lives, so that they can get a pay check and make a living.

I hadn't looked at it way - it seemed interesting to me.

I had mostly looked at in the way that people do hope to change the system from within, to find a way to make the corporation more enlightened...
the urge that makes a lot of people go into politics (or whatever)

Eh, sorry Em, but I work in a corporation (One of the good ones), and it's still a mess. You survive the system from within- you don't attempt to change it, least not in the lower levels. Peeps jobs are perpetually on the line at higher levels, and this promotes a climate of panic- not good for 'enlightenment' of any kind.

The metaphore in Angel for me is surviving the establishment, and keeping your inner self intact.

OATH

Angel is about responsibility, the true impact of death, and the cold slap of reality once you're out of high school.

IMHO.

Here here! I spent years working for large corporations. Very difficult to be a hippie in today's corporate climate. One of the many reasons I switched careers and now work for a very small company. Of course it took me ages to do that, and not everyone has the choice.

If the corporations ain't careful, we'll ALL have that choice in the next few decades...

To me Angel was all about the struggle for redemption. His going to work for Wolfram & Hart seemed to be a metaphor for being consumed by the very institution you started out trying to change.Very much like politics,as has already been stated.Angel,I believe, felt that since he had been on the Darkside,it made him uniquely qualified to destroy the company from within.

Not so much a metaphor then, seeing as that did actually happen to him! ;)

I disagree Grounded. He was tempted but never really gave into the evil.It is still a metaphor since it reflects something in the real world.
