Glenn Quinn actually grew up just a couple of miles from me. Not that I knew the guy, you understand, but I know the area where he grew up (Cabinteely) very well.

Yes, there was a big fuss among the Angel fanbase when he died. Although he was only in a few episodes, he was a firm favourite and I think a lot of us had hoped that he would show up for another episode. Death is no barrier in the Buffy/Angelverse after all! Just ask Darla.

They showed the video Cordelia made of Doyle during the hundreth episode of Angel, the same video that plays at the end of Glenn's last episode. I always thought it was a very sweet tribute, making sure he was included. He is indeed sadly missed.

I had the same reaction to Doyle as well as Glenn's death. I was really hoping he'd stay on the show long-term. One of the most underrated characters, if you ask me.

I always liked Whistler better. I heard once that he was supposed to have been in the Angel series instead of Doyle. Not sure what prevented that from happening.

Doyle's character does grow on you a bit, but he just never really sucked me in.

Actually according to Joss he intended to kill off the character early before the series even started.

Well, we ARE talking about Joss, after all. The man would kill off everyone if given half a chance. As much as I'm a fan of his stuff, the non stop snuffing off of characters after we've been introduced to and fallin in love with them is really a pet peeve of mine. (rant over )

I too was sad to see Doyle go, and was really sorry to hear of Quinn's passing. What a complete waste of talent. I can definatly see him doing all sorts of stuff post Angel, had he been able to kick his drug demons. Makes me sad & mad all at the same time. He DID this to himself, and it need not have been like this.

He is missed.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

Non-stop? It was hardly quite as desperate as that ;) If you ignore Angel S5 (and I think it's fair to given the circumstances), then only 3 principal characters were killed off across 180+ hours of TV. And that's including Tara!

I've not even seen all of Buffy yet, but she died how many times? 3 ? So I don't even want to start in w/ any of that just now.

As for Angel, let's see....if ya don't let me include Season 5, then it's hardly fair, now is it? Besides the finale, Fred and Cordy die off. And before, Darla dies (again). And we can't forget Lilah.

And in the Firefly 'verse, 2 of the original 9 crew died in just the first movie!

Point is, Joss likes killing off folks as much as he likes creating them.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

If a character dies and is resurrected that hardly counts as a character being 'killed off'.

I excluded S5 because **SPOILERS**

a) Wesley dies in the final episode, and I believe Joss has said that he would have returned had there been an S6
b) Fred dies, but again was intended to come back the next year
c) Cordy dies, but her story arc was significantly shaped by real world events

Darla and Lilah are both supporting cast. Besides, both of them made went on to make post-humous appearances!

And as we're all very aware, the movie was a condensation of many, many hours of potential TV episodes. Mitigating circumstances or what?

Grounded - You're just not gonna let me win this one, are ya ? Hey, did ya see my sig? Sure, it just says 'shoots' and not 'kills', but we know what Joss REALLY means, now don't we ?

Ok, not so much main characters, but ya gotta admit, lots of secondary folks die on Joss's shows. From the parasite demon Merl to Knox ( aka Tracey ), and a long list of folks who deserved it or not.

Niska -should die, didn't
Nandie - shouldn't have, but did.

Ok, I got nothin' more to add on this thread. Least not yet.

Well, death is one of Joss' main themes. It's something he grapples with in all his work. Like power (or lack thereof), and love (or lack thereof) and how people cope in the face of desperate circumstances. You have to hand it to the guy, he tackles the big stuff!

If I were going for a psyche 101 approach, I'd say his Mum's death had a huge impact on his writing. For those of you who've seen the Buffy season 5 episode 'The Body', most of the first half hour of that episode was pretty much taken directly from his own experience. It makes sense to me that he'd want to explore how popular, well loved characters' deaths impact the other characters, rather than just people who breeze in out of nowhere.

I wasn't aware of his mom's passing. There's something Joss and I share in common.

Worst as in most affecting or worst as in most poorly executed?

Worst Death....hmmmm

Poorly executed- the death of Wesley. I mean he wasnt even killed by a interesting character. It was some old guy, who is only really ever seen in 2 episodes!

Affected the most- hmm... in Buffy: Tara should never have died. She was just starting to become interesting and less mousey!

LETOV

I hadn't really developed into a real fan of Joss's at that point. I only occassionally watched Buffy but when Angel started up I really liked it. I think my favorite character was Doyle. I never watched another season of Angel or Buffy until occasionally in syndication after Doyle was gone. Well, maybe the first couple of season 2 but the interest was gone. One of these days I'll probably go back and watch 2-4. I watched all of season 5 and loved it, but I still miss Doyle. I wasn't aware of Glenn's problems until now, it truly is a shame.

As for what was the most shocking etc loss of a character (other than Doyle), I would have to go with Wash from Firefly/Serenity, Buffy's Mom from Buffy, and Fred from Angel. Although, I have to give Groosalug an honorable mention just for the way he died at the end of season 5.

I'll speak to that which I know best, the death of Wesley. Granted, he was offed by an 'old guy', but at least it had been established that he was a really bad, important 'old guy'. I think it was suppose to underscore just how the odds were stacked against Angel and the gang, and they had finally stepped on some very big toes.

Also, I can't help but notice the similarity to you saying Wesley died by a character who wasn't even interesting and how Lindsay was killed off, not by Angel, but instead by Lorne, one of the 'flunkies'.

Yep, from what he's said in public about her death, it appears that he arrived home one day to find she had died very suddenly. He discovered the body and had to deal with the aftermath.

Of course it goes without saying that an experience like that has a huge effect on your life, as well as anything you create. Certainly 'The Body' is the truest portrayal of loss and grief I've ever seen on TV.

I've yet to see that ep of Buffy. It's in my queue of DVDs, whenever the hell Blockbuster gets it's act together..... but I digress.

I wasn't familiar w/ the episode The Body, so I did a quick google. Above a site which gave me the answer, there was a link to 'Celebrity Atheist List', of which Joss's name was one. I checked the main page, and wow! I had no idea that Lance Armstrong, surviver of massive turmors all over his body and 7x Tour De France champion was on the list.

Interesting. Don't know how accurate or up to date it is,( Ted Williams and Christopher Reeve appear on the various lists ) but there's also a list for The Ambiguous - skeptical about theism and religion. One notable on the list is well known right wing radio man, G.Gordan Liddy.

Boy, did I steer off the road here! Sorry!
