Edited to include the supposedly "un-Angel-like" qualities.

1. "Being a vampire sucks."--opening line of Mick St. John (also a Harmony line from Buffy!)

2. "Like all good detective stories, this one started with a girl..." (opening Angel voice over--"Los Angeles. You see it at night and it shines. A beacon. People are drawn to it. People and other things. They come for all sorts of reasons. My reason? No surprise there. It started with a girl.")

3. The car (which someone mentioned down below).

4. Kevin Weisman (best known as Marshall from Alias, but he also was one of Glory's Hobbits)

5. Rudolf Martin (Buffy's Dracula)

A bizarre cross between Angel and Beauty and the Beast, IMO. Nice to see Kevin Weisman again, but my favorite thing about it was Jason Dohring...who SO deserves better material.

Talk me down man, somebody talk me down.

I'm trying, I'm trying really hard. But for the love of God, they stole the damned Angelmobile. Did they really think we'd see the black convertible and not make the connection? And if they were actually trying, they'd get rid of the damn trenchcoat.

*sigh*

I'll try to finish the rest of the episode...

Thank god Evanescence wasn't around when Buffy and Angel first started up. Then again, I don't see Joss putting that in the show, thank God. And what the hell is up with the Celine Dion?

Okay, calmer now.

The show's not horrible. Which is not to say it's good either, but I've seen worse. I think. And the actor who plays St. John isn't that bad, and I really like Jason Dohring (never watched Veronica Mars, so this is my first glimpse, so to speak). I will attempt to watch a few more episodes.

Ironically, this was on right after Doctor Who (Sophia Myles is David Tennant's girlfriend).

Yeah, I know I'm a fangirl.

I TOLD you Jason Dohring was good!!! LOL!!! That was just a glimpse though. This character is so much like Logan it's eerie (or maybe not considering Joel Silver was a VM producer), so I know he'll be great in the role. Logan was a evilish rich boy too, but was oddly sympathetic at the same time, thanks to Jason's acting.

Joss really did ruin us for other vamp shows, IMHO. I can't even imagine it being possible for anyone (even Joss) to top Angel and Spike...period!!! Alex O'Laughlin was all right, but not sure he was right for the role.

But okay, I'll give it a few more eps. just to see.

Has Joss commented on this obvious rip-off of his show?

I can't bring myself to bother - I expect it would just PO me. I know I'd miss the Joss dialogue, well rounded characters and driving story arcs.

I do like Jason Dohring (?) very much but I believe he has a bright future (not dependent on the success of this show...).

I suppose I'll have to break down and watch VM. Jason Dohring was intriguing enough that my curiosity has been piqued.

Yeah, gonna have to blame this one on Joss. If we didn't have Angel to compare this too, we might be enjoying this right now.

Well, maybe.

Is it a complete rip-off? I don't know... I seem to remember a show called Forever Knight that pre-dates Angel. I never watched it, but I thought that a vampire cop or detective was the premise of that show, too.

"Can you, for a moment, imagine how depressing it is to teach one thousand years of masculine ineptitude? Why do you think there are so few women historians? I'll tell you why. Because history is not such a frolic for women as it is for men... History is a commentary on the various and continuing incapabilities of men. History is women following behind with a bucket and a mop." - Alan Bennett, "The History Boys"

If he's commented, I haven't heard it yet.

Yeah, I think Jason Dohring will have a bright future too, regardless.

I'm still hoping (regardless of how I personally feel about the show) it's a mainstream success. Mainly for the genre. More interest in the genre means Joss might more likely to return to tv, which is where we ALL want him!!!!!!!!

Enjoy VM...especially the first season! Joss get me into that one, which was widely believed to be the "new Buffy" at the time.

Yeah, there was a series like that but apparently wasn't much because even most critics compare Moonlight to Angel rather than both, from what I've seen. If anyone compared Angel and Forever Knight when Angel first started, I really don't remember. I can't imagine that they would though. Joss is in a class by himself. It's impossible for me to not compare ANY type of show to his previous work. I just can't help it...everything pales, IMO.

Edit: After rereading this I realize it sounded snotty, but I in no way meant it to be.

I just checked at zap2it, and while Ghost Whisperer did better than it's competitors, Moonlight tied with the first half of Las Vegas for first place in it's timeslot. Don't know if that's a good thing or not. Las Vegas is in it's fifth year. I know this because Vanessa Marcil is on that show and a lot of GH fans--like me--were hoping it'd get cancelled so she'd return because we fear a recast.

Anyhoo, a brand new show with moderate buzz doing the exact same ratings-wise as a fifth-year show with moderate buzz?

I liked it. A lot!

I was worried going into it, because it has gotten a lot of criticism, not the least of which coming from Browncoats. But personally I think it is sufficiently different from Angel in many ways. Personally, I think it's closer to Blade.

Liked the acting, liked the cinematography and feel of the show, liked the dialog and characters, liked the story and the pacing. Sorry, folks, but I liked it a lot! in fact, the best new show this season, barring Pushing Daisies which hasn't aired yet.

You are one sick dude, sickdude! ()

Seriously though, I am glad someone liked it. I really am. If the show gets a lot of people liking it, as I stated above, then that's a score for the genre, if nothing else. And a score for the genre, means we are that much closer, hopefully, to getting Joss back in tv again, since horror-drama-scifi are his specialties!!!

The only new shows I've seen so far are Chuck, Bionic Woman and Moonlight (and Mad Men, if you count that one). I like both Chuck (more on second viewing than first) and Bionic Woman (so far) but I'm trying to reserve my absolute final judgement on Moonlight until after I've seen at least 5 eps. I'm hoping it will improve. Hoping they're not really gonna be sprinkling cult show actors and references throughout as an effort to keep us doubters from noticing it's still bad--my impression of the pilot.

If you haven't checked out Mad Men on AMC yet, you should definitely try it. I never thought I would really enjoy a show like this, but I really love it. Still a bit disturbed about the way women acted and were treated back then but then I guess it's not that far a cry from today's behaviors in some cases.

Matt Roush's review:

The least one should hope for from a new vampire drama is a little bite of originality. Alas, MOONLIGHT is a soggy, anemic bundle of film-noir private-eye cliche's wrapped in an underdeveloped context about a secret and disappointingly bland underworld of the undead living in the shadows of Los Angeles.

Destined to be compared unfavorably with the cult classic ANGEL, this show strands a charismatic lead (Alex O'Loughlin as Mick St. John, turned immortal a mere 60 years ago) amid a wooden supporting cast as it spins out familiar tales of angst, crime and thwarted desires.

If there's a twist, it's that the demons are human villains who deserve the supernatural whipping Mick gives them. In the good news/bad news department, Episode 2 improves on the awful pilot, but that episode's writer (ANGEL's David Greenwalt) has since left the show.

It's kind of sad to me actually. A brief reunion with an old "friend" doing what he does best (write for/run a vamp detective show), then he leaves us again. Sure hope he's okay.

I tried. I'm sorry, but I tried.

Rarely would I ask the TV gods to cancel something, but here I just might make an exception. Are they really wasting money on this? They could put another reality show on in its place, and the world would be better off.

*takes a few dozen deep breaths*

I really want to have hope here, but they've made it nearly impossible. Don't know if I'll be back at all next week.

I know how you feel, but I do NOT hope they cancel it. It's about mainstream success for the genre. The kind of people who wouldn't give a show called Buffy the Vampire Slayer the time of day. We need Joss back on TV, and that might help further OUR cause!

Gotta admit I like it. I don't really see the connections like you guys seem to, other than the whole vampire thing. There's no board, no 'ghouls and goblins', at least not yet. There's just a guy who got suckered, literally, and is trying to make the best of it.
As to Forever Knight, it was a terrific show, just too far ahead of it's time. Had a good back story, which tended to play too much of a part IMO, but the story was good, and the actors were top notch.
I'll take closer look, now, though, and see if I see what you do. But c'mon guys! A convertable and a trenchcoat? Takes more than that to be a ripoff, surely.
