I like it a lot, I'm gonna start watching it. But as I never saw Buffy I'm a little confused about the "rules of vampirism" or whatever. Obviously daylight and stakes kill them, and these things still apply to Angel even though he's a good, friendly vampire. I assume they don't like garlic or crossing running water, either?
And the coming uninvited thing confuses me. The other character, the half-something, basically says that vampires can't come uninvited, like with most vampire legends. So how come Angel goes several places -- the bad guy's house and office, the apartments of the girls -- uninvited? Does that rule not apply to Angel, or should I just pretend I didn't notice that?

Well, most offices are public spaces, and they can go in public spaces. Also, once they've been invited in somewhere, they're allowed in forever unless you do some hocus-pocus dis-invitation spell.

I think Joss dropped the garlic and running water bits; at least, I haven't seen them used in what I've watched so far.

How come you're watching Angel without Buffy? They're both pretty damn good! And there are some fun crossovers too.

Yes there are GREAT cross-overs...
of course I get that BtVS always had that High School/Girl Power thing that doesn't attract a lot of guys...but they also had Hush (the silent episode) and Once More With Feeling (the musical episode)...in other words: some of the most creative work Joss ever did.

So you'll notice, that once Angel is leaning on the empty space of an open door, because he had never been invited into the person's home...
but (back in a hospital somewhere) the person dies...
and Angel falls into the room...because the 'rule' (whatever) that keeps him out without an invitation no longer applies when the owner is dead.
And it never applies at all if the owner is a demon...

I know you'll have fun getting to see all these great shows for the first time!

Have fun!

Yes, in the pilot in particular, Angel can enter the villain's house because the villain is another vampire - hence, no invitation is needed. Also, he can enter the girl's apartment because she's already dead when he arrives. The rule about not entering is very specific - he can't enter the abode of a LIVING HUMAN BEING without an invite. Pretty much everywhere else is open to him without an invitation..

EDIT: An interesting caveat - when he gets an invitation, to be valid, it must be extended by someone living in that abode. In other words, Doyle can't invite Angel into Cordy's apartment - only Cordy can do that. This has dire consequences in a later episode where Angel is trying to save the life of someone who won't invite him in.

Thanks, this is helpful.
As to why I'm watching Angel w/o Buffy, the answer is simple. I never got into either of these shows, but I loved Firefly. This morning I was sick, and sitting in front of the TV. The pilot of Angel is on, so I watch it. I really don't have a lot of time for television -- most of it is crap anyway -- but I think I'll start watching this and just get left out of crossovers.

They've just watched the pilot and you're already spoiling them!

You're right. My bad! I didn't even think of it as a spoiler because I didn't give any names or places. But it was really wrong to even mention the situation, in general. I apologize - won't happen again.

's okay, I've trained myself to forget spoilers.
Thanks for all the info, though.

So I guess technically, when the "messenger" guy is in Angels apartment and says "you know I'm not a vampire like yourself because I'm here uninvited" or something to that effect, he could be a vampire because Angel's not human, right? People tell me I nitpick too much..

You know, that's a good question. I think Angel himself may be the exception to the rule because, unlike other vampires, he has a soul (like a human). I'll have to think about this some more, but it seems that while Angel doesn't need an invitation to another vampire's lair, another vampire might need one to get into his home because of his soul.

I'm really not sure about how that worked. Does anybody else have a recollection of whether other vampires needed to be invited into Angel's pad? I know lots of other types of demons broke in during the run of the show, but I don't remember whether any other vampires did.

When Spike went all obsessive stalker in Buffy, she festooned her room with garlic cloves. We never see whether or not any of it actually works though.

Kinda ironic, really, as the garlic thing is one of the few pieces of vampire lore that can be backed up scientifically.

Garlic changes blood chemistry (like alcohol, garlic gets absorbed into your bloodstream very quickly). It makes sense that vampires, who can smell blood, would react to it. It probably triggers a little subconscious vampire instinct that says "This one's past the sell-by date: don't eat."

It certainly works for other blood suckers like mosquitoes. Eat enough and it repells people, too.

Darla entered Angel's apartment in B1.07 'Angel' so I don't think his soul gives him any protection from vampires entering his place.

Of course she also found packets of human blood in his fridge in that episode.

I assume garlic works, the slayer is not likely to employ an ineffective method for very long. But I don't recall that we were ever shown how or why.

Um, I'm lost. Uh, I'm Angry. And I'm Armed.
