okay, i have said it before, but wesley is my favorite character in any of the three joss whedon shows. his first appearance on angel is absolutely hilarious!

i am a rogue demon hunter.
you're a demon hunter?
ROGUE demon hunter.

trying to look all cool and mysterious in his black leather pants that chafe. taping the knife too tightly to his leg that he cannot get it off and ends up hopping around on one foot. classic.

of course, later he morphs into a complete bada--. loved it. he is the best.

I love Wes. Out of all the characters, he had the most dramatic character development.

Something I never could understand, though, did Wes hunt rogue demons, or was he a demon hunter that went rogue?

It's interesting. At first, I really didn't care for Wesley. He was funny, but to me he didn't have the charm that Doyle had (not to mention I love Irish accents). However, after seeing the Wesley develop over the seasons he definately ended up being one of my favorites.

I really agree...Wesley was so unlikeable in Buffy's 3rd Season...
and then he appears as such a wonderful comic character in Angel's 1st Season...
and then developed into such a tragic hero...

Wes was a favorite of mine until I met Alexis
last summer in Oakland
and now I have to say that he is my VERY favorite

i think he was more of the kind of "kung-fu" type of demon hunter. drift around, kill demons. more that HE is the rogue since he is a former watcher (who got fired) and now he is freelancing.

that is too funny. loved it. if you have more video clips of wes' funnier moments, you should make a montage of "wes' greatest hits" or something like that. i would LOVE to see that. the scene in angel when they all revert to their youth's is hilarious.

Me too. I despised him in Buffy, and the first part on Angel (that was also a holdover from liking Doyle's character), but he grew on me until he became my favourite Angel character, and 2nd favourite in the Buffy-verse.
I was devestated at the end of the last episode of Angel. I watched it thinking "this is not happening! It's all just a horrible dream & I'll wake up & it'll all be fine again."

and that's funny, I LOVED Wes fro the first moment he appeared on Buffy. it was soooo cool how Buffy and Giles teamed up on him and he was so clueless and so rightous in it. Buffy asking if he was evil and if she could slay him and Faith mostly ignoring him and Giles showing him off on every opportunity and Wes just kept on trying, never giving up, making such an a** of himself in the process and I think it was more than obvious that he was a nice boy at heart trying to be a Watcher the way he was told to be and failing miserably.

and when he came back to AtS as the RDH he was just cool and it was the same all over again, Wes trying to be something he's not becaue he thinks it's what he should be.

and then he stays and with time he grows up and finds himself and we all find out he's just perfect the way he ist, if he just stops trying to be something else.

Unfortunately, Joss must have known how we all felt about Wes. Before the finale aired Joss said that he wanted to "share his pain" over the cancellation of Ats. Well, he couldn't have found a better way to do that than killing our beloved Wesley.

Wes is a great character.
He was really funny on Buffy (moments like rescuing Cordelia from Vamp Willow in "Dopplegangland" or his first day as new Watcher.)
Although, he was excellent on Angel. (Wes was really creepy in "Billy" and who could forget the ordeal with baby Connor?)
He became a well rounded character. It was sad to see him die, but at least he went out fighting for the greater good..

yeah the point was he wanted himself seen as the 'rogue' because he thought it was wild and sexy and whatever and all the people he met just kept asking him, what a 'rogue demon' was because it simply wouln't even cross their mind that he was the 'rogue' hunter.

poor Wes always underestimated and misunderstood.

Almost. The point is he's not any kind of demon hunter (and certainly not a rogue one). As inferred by the episode (through Wes' various bunglings) he hasn't done a hell of a lot of demon hunting in between Sunnydale and LA ;)

the only other person i can think of is angel who commented:

wes: "i'm a rogue demon hunter"
angel: "you're a demon hunter?"
wes: "ROGUE, demon hunter, yes."

basically, angel could not even believe the demon hunter half of that, much less the rogue part! hahahahaha! i LOVE that scene. HI-larious! and then wes tries to look all cool by propping his foot on the bed and he slips off and nearly falls on his behind! classic.

I agree with that for the most part. Although he did say in his first angel ep that he had tracked the demon, "a particularly nasty bugger". Did he not say that he nearly had him in arizona or something. So he had done a little demon hunting after the council sacked him, the only thing was that he was tracking the wrong demon.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Not necessarily. I used to go fishing a lot and not catch any fish. I still considered myself a fisherman at the time - maybe not a good one, but a fisherman just the same.

I think the theory that Wes called himself a demon hunter, but one who had never caught a demon, is a good one. Let's face it, if incompetent, pre-Angel Wesley had caught a demon, it probably would have killed him before he ever had a chance to show up on Angel. So the idea that he had hunted, but never caught one makes a lot of sense.

I don't think we're giving Wes enough credit. True, he was on the green side when he first showed up on Buffy and then Angel, but he was head boy at the Watcher's Academy, he had an overbearing father who presumedly wanted his son to excel in everything (and it seems Wes tried to fulfill that), and he did show up on Angel with weapons and the practical knowledge for demon-hunting.

I think it's perfectly realistic to assume Wes had been tracking, hunting, and killing demons (perhaps not the most dangerous kinds, though) in the time he spent between Buffy and Angel.

That's exactly my point. Whether or not you catch a fish, you are a fisherman. Whether or not you shoot a buck, you are a hunter. Hunters don't change their names to Slayers after they shoot a deer.

It's incorrect to assume 'Hunter' means he hasn't killed anything yet.

Ah, I misread your post. I assumed that you meant that to be a hunter it was necessary to have BOTH hunted AND killed a deer, demon, or whatever. So we're really in agreement.

It's possible to be a demon hunter, but never to have killed one. Also, it's possible to have killed one without ever having been a hunter (say you accidentally ran over one with your car or something).

So Wesley saying he was a rogue demon hunter really doesn't tell us anything at all about his success rate, does it? However, he never actually mentions killing any, either (does he? I don't remember for sure)- just tracking them.

and he probably would have (told everyone) if he killed any.

and changing his title to 'slayer' and the reverse deduction was a joke hence the smilies.

but maybe he would have changed his title too if he'd actually killed a demon (that was worth killing). I hope the poodle lived to tell the tale (to other dogs, so they are warned).

let's just agree that our Wes is the best the posturing stumbling demon hunter with the chafing leather pants as well as the kickass version of later seasons.

and the video I almost forgot to mention was beyond great - soooooo funny. thanks a lot for that gem.

The cool thing about Wes is that he was just a guy. He wasn't very strong, but he could still kick some ass (like when he barrels into Holtz's lair). He was very smart, but not overbearing. And he always did what he felt was right. In all the times he could have turned his back on fighting the good fight and no one would have blamed him, he kept doing it. He never compromised his position. As Angel said, he makes the hard decisions, even if he has to make them alone.

I disagree...it is true that Angel never used guns
(and of course Buffy couldn't shoot at all)
but this wasn't Wesley's first time with a gun,
or his last...
Because Wes didn't have super powers he always tried 'whatever works'

and personally I like seeing Wes as the Harrison Ford/Indiana Jones type character on Ats
