Or is that overstating the obvious ? I mean, wasn't that implied with the character ? Was that the REAL reason he was such a cast out from his own family?

I think you're mistaking that for a HUMAN reason for why he was cast out. Seems to me there was a demonic reason, and sexual preference wasn't one of them.

It's been so long since I watched the series, however, that I'll have to defer to someone a lot more knowledgeable on that than I am right now.

No, but remember that there doesn't seem to be any sexual dimorphism in Pylea (Lorne's mom was played by a man and had a beard, yet probaby had a female reproductive role). This would suggest that either Pylean males & females look alike (like dwarves), or that they're hermaphroditic and concepts of "male" and "female" have no relevance.

We've never seen any "female" members of Lorne's species, except for the obviously costumed dancers at his Vegas show.

And Lorne was disliked because he was a dreamer and aesthete in what appeared to be a tribe of warriors. Remember how his reaction to music was different than anyone else's would have been.

THAT's what it was - Everyone else had apoplectic fits or conniptions because of music - hurt their ears, right?

I would even be willing to bet that the female members of his species were outcasts as well - for having strange physical deformities. However, that would be a HUMAN reason as well - same one that has kept the glass ceiling in place for so long.

Thank you Cybersnark. I can now go on peacefully through my day.

Well, I recall the music issue, and how unique he was, what with his joy of song and his powers of foresight.... was that special to him or did his people all have some sort of ability ? I can't recall.

What I found interesting is that he gave no hints ( I could discern ) on leaning towards one sex or t'other. Although Angel had a problem with Lorne calling him pastries. ( hah hah - always makes me laugh )

I just wondered what the fan's in general thought, and if there was an agreed upon, though unspoken, concensus on this matter.

Thanks folks.

I always kind of assumed he was, but only because of his flamboyance and the fact that he was so FABULOUS. I guess that's a bit presumptuous of me...

It wasn't anything that bothered me about him, though - if fact, I loved the character of Lorne. Who else could call Angel "Angel-cakes"? :)

THEREALME

If I recall correctly, all members of Lorne's clan were able to sense things psychically. I think that Lorne's brother (?) used it to hunt. But Lorne's ability was a bit different, I think. He could use it to foretell someone's future.

ANGEL: Is it gonna to be alright? Is there a stain?

LORNE: Oh, relax, crumb cake. I've got the soda water working overtime. Man, little Connor burps like a champ.

ANGEL: At least he's sleeping.

LORNE: Who wouldn't? With that sweet Irish lullaby you crooned. Just a hair flat on the bridge, but more to the point... Cordelia?

ANGEL: What about her?

LORNE: I read you while you were singing, you big corn muffin, and uh, can't say as I blame. I mean, what a woman she's become.

ANGEL: You're not supposed to be reading me. Anyway, you read me wrong.

LORNE: Sorry, strudel. It's not just when you're singing. We got a little term back in Pylea. Kyrumption?

ANGEL: I know it.

LORNE: Okay. When two great heroes come together...

ANGEL: There will be no coming together, okay? Everything we've been through together and all anybody wants to talk about is...

LORNE: Can't fight Kyrumption, cinnamon buns. It's fate. It's the stars. Kyrumption is...

ANGEL: Stop saying that. (petulant) And stop calling me pastries

And that ability only worked when people sang.

I will never, EVER forget the look on Lorne's face when Fred sang "You are my Sunshine" after she and Wesley got together.

For purposes of saving any Angel inductees from spoilers, I'll stop there. If you've seen it, you know what I mean, and any further comments on that should be written with the spoiler commands.

If you haven't seen it. Do.

If Lorne was the female of the species, does that make him gay? Or is it a human perception of his male oriented appearance that makes us lean toward the idea that he's gay?

In our culture, as humans, seeing a male attracted to another male means homosexual. In Lorne's species, it would be considered heterosexual.

Was he gay? If you mean generally happy and completely FABULOUS. Oh heck yeah. I LOVED Lorne. I'd have gone to the club myself and belted out "Isn't it Ironic" just for him.

PHOENIXROSE

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

He was sensitive (I mean, come on, empath!) he had a lilt to his voice, loved music and art, had a sense of style (only someone with green skin could pull off that suit, am I right?) was persistently friendly, loved women but never touched them, and wasn't really at his best in a physical fight, more handling the emotional end of things.
In other words? Stereotypical gay man in a green demon body.
However, as has been said, since he wasn't human that meant very little. Human standards don't apply to him. He was cast out by his family as a disappointment because he didn't enjoy seeing blood run and loved music. Now, maybe that is a metaphor for the ostracized gay man in human society, I couldn't say. But lacking any members of his own species to pair with (if, in fact, they 'pair' in a sexual way on Pylea anyway) we never saw him in a romantic or sexual entanglement. He seemed to get a certain fulfillment from his friendly relationships with people, no matter their gender. Maybe, considering his empathic powers, he functioned somewhat like an incubus, feeding off emotions (if not sexual emotions) and that's part of why he had the bar and the interactions he did.
He never seemed to want sex or romance, just peace and music.

One of the most dramatic moments of the series, imo.

Lorne definitely grew on me as a character. Before I started watching ANGEL seriously, and had any clue of what the show was about, I scoffed at the idea of some green dude w/ horns had any real purpose of being on the show, save for possible camp value. But, as was the case for the rest of the show, I saw there was so much more than I thought from 1st glance. Funny, that.

I'll answer my own question - No. Lorne wasn't 'gay', at least not as how humans understand it.

Was re-watching Waiting in the Wings, and Lorne is telling Angel that he should show his true feelings toward Cordy. Lorne, in the midst of calling Angel 'pastry' names, mentions that he'd take a pass at her, if he thought she looked good in green ( or near enough ). Lorne might switch hit, but now that Andy's gone, I just miss the guy.

And now I'm sad. Great.

RAHLMACLAREN

"Damn yokels, can't even tell a transport ship ain't got no guns on it." - Jayne Cobb

Lorne’s obviously very eccentric, but not gay. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!

Exhibit A: -From “Happy Anniversary”- Lorne is worried about embarrassing himself in front of the opposite sex.
“I better stick to the shadows and think of something to say should we happen upon a comely co-ed.”

Exhibit B: -Also from “Happy Anniversary”- Lorne thinks Cordelia is hot.
“...Not to mention, Cordelia? Wooh! Hot-o-rama! In the 'oh my sizzling loins' sense of the word, if you know what I mean.”

Exhibit C: -From “Belonging”- Through extensive research, Lorne knows where to find the females.
“While the rest of you boys were off hunting, I was down at the water hole chatting up the
senoritas, gathering a little love.”

I think it was just that Lorne’s mom was supposed to be SO ugly that the creators had to cast a bearded man. Do we know how OLD his mother is?

I could of sworn I saw one or two when the gang went to Pylea. I'll have to watch again.

I still liked that scene where Lorne overheard Holt humming a ditty as he exited the bar...and gave atimley warning for all present to RUN!...right before that fuel drum and the fragmentation grenade came bouncing down the stairs.Way to throw in a useful skill set,Joss!

My own opinion is that Lorne isn't homosexual, (and as pointed out, the sexual standards of his species may be very different,) but on arriving in LA, he came across some examples of the 'flamboyantly fabulous gay' archetype, liked aspects of it, and adopted the whole thing into his persona as a way of acclimating to Earth society.
