okay, i am assuming everyone here liked the show angel. fairly safe assumption. what i want to know is, what are people's opinions about the best and worst vampire related movies or shows? how about staying within the last 15 years or so. some choices to think about:

the blade trilogy
interview with the vampire
shadow of the vampire
underworld
dracula
forever knight
vampires
queen of the damned
vampire hunter D
angel
buffy the vampire slayer (movie and show)

Also:
Dracula 2000
Hellsing (The animé series with Alucard, not the Hugh Jackman movie.)
Roswell Conspiracies (Vampires as aliens, more snake-like than bat-like.)
InuYasha (Kikyo may not be a literal vampire, but she's an undead being with no soul [or only a fragment of one], who must feed on living souls to survive. Also one of my favourite villains.)

A Cheesy, late 80's or early 90's made-for-tv movie called. . .

"Blood Ties"

This was actually a really good spin on the genre as a whole, because it addressed the BASIS of the legend rather than the legend itself. Instead of the Vampires being immortal, super-human creatures that require blood for sustinence, etc. etc. etc. . .it focused on a community of folks from a little known European Country called "Carpathia". They live longer than normal. . .are noticeably stronger. . .and as a cultural ritual, draw blood from their partner during sex or from their opponent during a fight. . .however there is a group of 'Vampire Hunters' who believe these folks are actual vampires, rather than the not-quite-normal folks the legends are born from. . .not a bad idea for a story. . .probably could have been done ALOT better.

It's not on film (yet), but those of you who've read Bram Stoker's original should try to track down The Journal of Professor Abraham Van Helsing, "edited" by Prof. Allen C. Kupfer (New York: Forge, April 2004, hardcover). It chronicles Van Helsing's introduction to vampires, and frames Stoker's novel (in the middle of the Journal, Van Helsing exits to deal with Dracula, then re-enters a few weeks later), and does a really cool job of filling in Stoker's missing backstory, and even introduces a new Big Bad; one even older then Dracula.

Also, it's presented in a way that takes advantage of psychological horror fiction in ways that many modern "horror" books don't. Not too much blood or violence, but the text itself is "packaged" in a helpfully unsettling frame. Read it late at night, with a single light on, and it'll leave you questioning what you think is reality. . .

Well, I loved Forever Knight (up until the end, that is... That was just !), so I'm glad to see you include that.

However, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned what amounts to one of my favorite vamp movies ever: The Lost Boys. (I know, it was 18 years ago, but still... )

actually, my list at the top was not my choices, they were just some titles to get people thinking although i have seen most of those movies/shows. i guess i should throw my hat into the ring too. i would have to take angel, though. it was not always good, but when it they were on a roll, they were REALLY on a roll.

DROCCULARI

Kathryn Bigelow's Near Dark! On the DVD, if you get a chance listen to the commentary or watch the Making of documentary. The things Lance Henriksen did to get into character are scary all on their own.
