I just finished formating an online essay that is based on my interview with Tim Minear. It's at www.pbgaines.com/firefly/

"Some Notes from the Siege of the Last American" is an essay in nine parts that include a web-friendly system of footnotes. I'd be interested in everyone's feedback on the essay content or other footnotes to add.

This is meant to be a follow-up to the "Firefly; A Special Feature" DVD I made last year. There's a missing piece in the DVD, and this essay is supposed to fill it.

Keep flying,

P.S. My next project will involve a team of fans/writers. Anyone in the Seattle area (my turf) find this intriguing?

I definitely like it! I had similar thoughts about the relationship between the Western heroes and a sort of re-discovery of our own American history - especially revelaing for people who, in their youth, grew up in a background that was skeptical of traditional American nationalism. Some media like this - because I've seen that Joss Whedon can interface with that post-nationalistic and/or liberal culture - can help build bridges. People like me who thought of the Westerns as a joke several years back are now able to look upon it again with a much greater respect.

(They're one of my favorite movie genres now. Sergio Leonne forever!)

Hello again, Mr Gaines. I have a copy of your DVDs, and in them I especially enjoyed your detailed examination of the episodes, and of the characters' relationships to each other.

I think you have a very good handle on the series and its' characters, and your essay gives some further insights into why we see Mal the way we do. You go further into the writers possible sources and inspirations than even we here usually do. I highly recommend both your essay and your DVDs to any Firefly fan.

Unfortunately, while I am a fan, I'm decidedly NOT anywhere near the Seattle area, but the best of luck in your next project!

MAL "You only gotta scare him."
JAYNE "Pain is scary..."

Oh, I forgot to mention that Tim Minear gave us some very important insight with this interview. To wit: "I don't do Chinese Checkers dialogue." Think about it. Pretty damn earth shattering.
