Like the show--never looked at one of his cookbooks. but then, I've got more cookbooks than I know what to do with. I really enjoy explanatory nature of the show--he does a great job of talking through the how and why of a dish/recipe. i also like the mix of science and history background that gets thrown in. I think this is one of the best cooking shows around for actually teaching viewers about cooking, rather than presenting a single recipe or focusing on a host's personality rather than the food.

how are his cookbooks?

His cookbooks are realy good, it's like the show except even more detail. Like his baking book, before anything he explained about baking and the properties of yeast and stuff and the cooking utensils you will need and why, it's really indept and better than other plain recipe only book.

I've often described him as the bastard child of Mr. Wizard and Graham Kerr (the Galloping Gourmet)...with a heavy dash of my high school biology teacher thrown in (shh, I don't tell my husband about that....

i watch it pretty much everyday and i try to tape as much as i can! the DVD sets from food network are ridiculously expensive. anyway, like i said, it is the only show i watch on TV that is not in reruns. being a scientist, i guess it appeals to me because of the science behind his recipies and how he always explains WHY you do certain things. i love that. knowing why certain ingredients are required allows me to tinker more with recipes.

Yes it was...I think it was in March '04. There wasn't a lot of publicity for it; it was part of the Simon Malls' promotion of famous chefs/cooking celebrities - they came in to Simon-owned malls for a day and did demos and book signings. I just happened to find out about it two days before from one of my friends (the blond in the last few photos), and she told us about it.

So, you're in the TB area? Yay!!! Another TB Browncoat! We do exist; there's a nice group of us in the St. Pete/Clearwater area, and a smattering we know in Tampa and outlying areas. And of course, we're planning a shindig in Orlando for the movie premiere, so stay in touch!

Perhaps my most favourite bit about how Alton Brown conducts his show is his philosophy of avoiding buying lots of specialty kitchen and cooking implements and instead showing his viewers how to do many things with some that's cheapish (and not intended for the task) over using a lot of highly-priced items one might use once or twice a year.

If you can survive death, you can probably survive almost anything.

I'm probably not going to make it either...it's close to where I work, but far from where I live, and since I'm off work today for MLK day, I'm going to just stay home and catch up on homework and stuff I need to do around here. I found out that it is just a signing, you actually have to pay $75 for the demo session/wine & cheese reception they're having later.

And yes....I don't like Bobby Flay either....way too smug, and the whole thing he did with jumping up on the counter...

The original Iron Chef was just way too much fun...especially when we turned it into a drinking game!

HARDWARE

Since Rat insisted I have to admit it; Hi, I'm Hardware and I'm an Eater.

Actually got to meet AB at a book and cook expo near Philly. He signed my first edition "I'm Just Here for the Food." I got food poisoning that day, but that's another story.

First time I saw this show I thought 'wow, a show that explains WHY you do something, not just HOW to do it.'

Anyhow, my favorite piece of Alton related gear. Per Alton's many suggestions I decided to buy a pizza stone to even out my oven's highs and lows. At first I had just picked up a big old slab of ceramic from the cooking store near my house and then I saw that Lodge made a cast iron pizza stone. Brilliant! Lugging my new found prize home I found a new use for it.

When the weather is too nasty or I want to make a really good London Broil I move the cast iron pizza stone to the top rack and leave the oven on 500 degrees for about 20 minutes. Then I switch it over to broil and let the heating element in my electric oven get rocket hot. Open the oven, pull out the rack and slap the steak or London Broil down on the hot iron and slap it back under the broiler. 5-7 minutes later the steak is done to perfection on both sides and ready to come out and rest.

The more I get to know people the more I like my dogs.
