No, I’m not just talking about things like TV shows or movies being rebooted. But entire franchises are being torn down and rebuilt and in not a flattering manner either.

Of course, there is the reeducation of our own history going on here in the US as well in Europe. That could probably be it’s own thread.

But in pop culture, we have everything from Star Wars, Star Trek. Doctor Who, and most if not all TV shows or movies.

Add the Banana Splits to the list of bastardized shows. No longer are the four musical instrument playing animal characters a dopey offbeat parity of the Beatles, they have been turned into maniacal bloodthirsty monsters on a Syfy channel movie.

I suppose some director or executive thought that was clever and comedic, but instead it just came off as extremely cringe.

There’s probably two generations now removed from the original show who have no idea who these characters are, but now this is how they first get introduced to them?

What the hell is going on here? Across-the-board familiar characters and storylines are being repackaged and crafted to almost universally negative and unrecognizable versions of their former selves.

I can’t imagine that this is being driven by they need or desire from fans to see this. It’s just lazy riding where people take establish characters and then tear them down or turn them into cartoons of them selves.

Furthermore, Disney has decided to lock up virtually every old movie it has the rights to so that they can never be shown in a theatre.. That means Alien , for example, cannot be shown in the theater anymore. And the list of movies is very long. Why would Disney want to do that?

Oh sure, you can go out and buy those and play them on your home device, but that’s about the only way you’ll ever see them. They will no longer appear on any streaming service or on-demand.

Oh, and of course...

Life Cereal has gender swapped Mikey. HE is now a SHE.

They couldn't introduce a new character, and call her ' Missy ', ' Jenny ', or any other of 100's of girl names.

Nope. It's " Mikey " and she's a girl.

So many people in the entertainment industry were so happy when Disney Corp bought STAR WARS and then FOX...until now. They've ruined STAR WARS and are locking away many FOX classics.

Some time ago there was a terrible muckup which hamstrung the release to DVD of the original TV Series Six Million Dollar Man. It was tied up in rights by Weinstein, he wanted to make it a comedy, with Jim Carrey.

Thankfully I have not seen anything come of that horrible idea.

Hell, was Adam Sandler not available ? That is a terrible idea. Of course, 6 million dollars would be more like 600 million, if not more.

Maybe they think we'll not know the difference. Story telling is a true art. A craft. I get that we can hear the same story, but from a different perspective, or told in a different way, and that certainly allows for variations in how it can be treated.

And yes, even given a bit of a overhaul, with the essence of the story still at the heart. But it's less that Hollywood and others have stopped trying. They're actively going after known stories and characters and intentionally retconning them , instead of offering up brand new material.

I hope the stories of Dr Who aren't true, and that Tennent isn't coming back in some sort of former version of HIMSELF , to offer up all the past doctors as some sort of sacrifice to answer to Nurse Who for all the decades of toxic masculinity.

IT's not enough for these bastards to kill a franchise, but now they're parading the corpse around like a trophy and shoving it in everyone's faces.

Same w/ Star Wars.

Same w/ Star Trek.

And on it goes.

AU, I am old enough to have watched the Banana Splits and what you said they did is NOT kid friendly. As you know that was the point of the show.

Well, they tried it a number of years ago with the Monkees and it failed as well.

I remember that, they wanted to make it after the parody reboot of "Starsky and Hutch", (Staring Ben Has-Been Stiller) but when that bombed they scraped the idea.

If they want to reboot something why doesn't Disney Corp call Joss and Tim and see if it would be possible to reboot "Firefly", just for God's sake don't put it of a streaming service, I'm begging them.

Don’t recall any monkees reboot, but the Banana Splits were just odd to me. I “ got “ they were a part of the drug culture while still being too young to get what that even meant. Basically they were just filler in between the other shows that they had. They weren’t really considered the main attraction, at least from my point of view.

Which makes it all the more odd that the makers of this syfy movie decided to turn them into twisted furry killing cyborgs. If anything, I'd have had them be the heroes of the story, but that's just the normnie in me, I guess.

It wasn't ' franchise fatigue '. It was murdered, by Disney, Iger, Kathleen Kennedy, Jar Jar Abrams, Ruin Johnson and the cult of SJW ( social justice whiners )

So add Star Trek Picard to the list as well.

I'm trying to grasp what is behind all this purposeful retconning of established Sci-Fi lore. Dr. Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, Terminator... decades of successful storytelling being overwritten.

WHY?

Is the allure of easy $ just too strong for lazy writers and production companies to pass up? Is the prospect of taking a chance on their own efforts just no longer viable?

Because one after another, these franchises are being destroyed, and it seems no one cares. Instead of making REAL money, these iconic IP's are being cannibalized, in a feeding frenzy of destruction.

Or is there something else going on here.

The pattern is too damn similar, across the industry, to be mere happenstance.

Is it a school of thought, an actual cult mindset? Or is this being directed... by someone pulling strings.

Dr. Who - Literally the entire series was destroyed with the latest episode. Fuck you, BBC, Fuck you, Chibbs. Rot in hell forever.

Oh, and Tom Clancy's book - Without Remorse, is coming to the big screen. Yay!

I see people in his comments section saying stuff like "how are you not famous" all the time.

But I think he is famous. Mainstream fame doesn't seem to be doing too well these days. I don't see Ryan making any pathetic "look at me" videos or singing imagine with no makeup on, is all I'm sayin'.

It's impossible to pick a favorite video of the ones he's made. None of them are bad.

I really like this one.

The way I screw them is by never watching it and instead watching RedLetterMedia do their reviews of it instead.

Much more entertaining, IMO.

Pretty sad, given that it's only two guys sitting in chairs across from one another drinking beer. I'd be lying if I said they had zero production budget though, because they really have some nice cameras and microphones.

A thread about what makes a good YouTuber is probably due. I watch way too much, having subscribed to 30-40 channels. Now, I don't watch most of those on a weekly basis, maybe just 6-8, but most of them I'll check in on and a few are almost entirely ' support 'subscriptions. I may check in on them once every month or two.

I'd say most of the appeal for me is whether the person can communicate clearly and distinctly, is their content interesting or informative, and production value. If they're filming w/ a potato and speaking through a Dixie cup and a piece of string, that's not gonna work for me.

Most of us can carry on a coherent conversation well enough but to publicly speak into a mic and cam, with the presence of mind to keep it interesting while having a sense of the technical aspects of things - not getting too close or far away from the mic, proper lighting, background and surroundings... mostly prep stuff that goes unnoticed - that's what separates the better ones from the weekend Bettys.

Not a bad idea about the thread.

I'm not sure if you watch RedLetterMedia or not, but they certainly don't fall into the "weekend Betty" description, although I might have just made it sound like they do.

The Picard and STD reviews they do are part of one of their segments where they're sitting in a room (that one of the guys constructed, and I assume is only used for these segments) and they just talk, sometimes for an hour, about a TV show or a movie. It's usually filmed by more than one person and has different camera angles just to break it up a bit.

That's by far their most "basic" prentations, with "Re: View" coming in a close second and being basically the same style except it's commentary on old movies or TV shows rather than stuff just airing now.

Their production value can go quite high in other segments that they do. I believe they were the first people to have McCauly Culkien on their show (if you haven't noticed him popping up from channel to channel now for the last 2 or so years). It looks like they became pretty close friends with him because he's always dropping in every few months to do another show with them, some of them requiring him to sit in a basement with 5 or 6 other people for a full day watching some of the shittiest movies ever put on film and doing a round table discussion of them after the fact.

They're OG YouTubers too. Their really old videos even pre-date the oldest videos on their channel and can be seen uploaded from time to time by other accounts.

Their F*CK YOU it's January are probably among my favorite skits, and I wish they did one every year.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Virtue signaling for absolutely no reason, what so ever. Personal fav Karen Gillan is rumored to be in a ' reboot ? ' Pirates of the Caribbean with OUT Johnny Depp.
Depp may not be a boy scout, but he certainly got royally screwed by Amber Herd and the fake claims of abuse. The very reason his name has been trashed is because of her hideous lies about him abusing her, when it was the exact opposite! Eff that skank.

So now Depp still has the stench of being abusive towards women, is silently ghosted by Disney, and it's on to better things now, huh?

If Disney were smart ( of course they aren't ) they'd try to do something like meet in the middle, have the next PotC movie work in a REASONABLE plot with Karen Gillan as the lead, and then at the end, bring back Depp. Leave it open , so he could return to the franchise, or even say farewell, as he goes off to other things, hands the keys over to Karen and then gets a proper send off for all the bank he's made Disney over the course of the franchise.

Not a fan of Disney anymore, but just offering some free advice. Knowing full well it'll be ignored, because Disney is rotten to the core.

I heard that a week or two ago, but I don't know if there was anything to it.

I think that's a great gesture by Amazon if they do it, but I think that woke is still clinging on enough that they won't be able to fix the problems they had anyhow.

If I were Bezos, I'd put it on pause for about 5 years and pick it up after woke is dead and everybody stops listening to the fat, ugly, crybaby nerds on Twitter. Yanno, like we all used to do since the dawn of time before the Internet made everyone crazy.

I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate that style of animation. There are YouTube channels with 1/5th the overhead that can make far better product.

But they use it because it's cheap, and the labor is cheap because the labor is talentless and would otherwise be unemployable.

It's a shame that Velma was so awful. For 2023 the animation was pretty great looking for a TV series.
