I am a praiser, I do love this movie, and I can't wait until I finish reading "hitchhikerss guide to the galaxy" so i can then read fight club the book! Great story, great acting, great directing, great movie.

As a film, I think it's a great work of art. The direction, the performances, the dialogue, it's all very well produced. The DVD is also a textbook example of exactly how to do it with plenty of genuinely interesting bonus material alongside an accurate conversion of the movie.

In terms of what actually goes up on screen, I think it's reprehensible. Apart from the utter stupidity of most of it ("Hey look! A guy's beating himself up! Let's quit our jobs and follow him, even though he constantly acts crazy!" or "Let's blow up eight buildings just to wipe out credit card records! I'm sure they won't have off-site back ups like every other company!"), the sheer nihilism and desperate self-loathing is very off-putting to me..

You don't like Ikea? Don't buy Ikea. Hand carve your own furniture, see if anyone cares. You don't like your job? Quit, retrain, be something else. You think someone else doesn't like their job? That doesn't give you the right to threaten their life. How many astronauts do you think NASA really needs?

The idea that some people would look to a fictional psychotic, mentally unbalanced, bullying, fascist, thug as some sort of role model is both bewildering and disturbing to me. I feel perfectly comfy in my masculinity without needing to beat up some other guy to prove it.

Thankfully, my hope that this was all just a subtle satire on how people will pay good money to hear about anti-consumerism seems to be coming true. Next up: Fight Club - the video game. Keep sending your money to News Corp, they really need it.

From the abnormal psychological perspective I love this movie. I agree that the behaviors of the characters are outrageous and farfetched. That is the point. This is an individual suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder (previously known as Multiple Personality Disorder) and is totally unaware of his suffering. It raises the commonly debated point of when is a behavior abnormal? When an individual is experiencing clinical distress? When those around the individual see that he or she is experiencing clinical distress or may cause harm to themselves or others? As psychologist when do we have the right to say that a behavior is abnormal? Up until very recently earlier versions of the DSM said that homosexuality and PMS were mental disorders. Then again I digress. My point is, that viewing the film with the criterion of DID in mind you see so many of the finer points of human behavior and the human mind at work.

Psychologically, this is fascinating. Doesn't it make everyone want to lock them in separate rooms and do experiments on them?

NEEDLESEYE

I think one of my favorite parts of this movie is where Norton/Tyler is in his boss' office and begins to punch and throw himself into a big bloody mess to blackmail his boss.

Also the office scenes mentioning things like "action items." I nearly died from laughing, after being stuck in a really horrid/stupid corporate job (and leaving all of it). It's always so serious, with that ridiculous corporate speak.

Selling women's fat back to them in a soap.

One of my favorite lines, H.B. Carter/Marla, "Have you ever heard a death rattle before? Do you think it'll live up to its name? Or will it just be a death... hairball?"

I really wish history didn't have so many examples of 'the masses' looking to non-fictional psychotic, mentally unbalanced, bullying, fascist thugs as role models.

One of the things I like most about Fight Club is that it showcases desperation and it's a very modern kind of desperation. It's not the desperation of people fighting life-or-death battles, it's the desperation of people for whom life seems to have no meaning. Almost everybody can identify with it on some level. If you can't identify with it at all then I must congratulate you on being freakishly well-adjusted.

And regardless of the cause, desperate people do crazy not-particularly-well-thought-out things. Hell, Hitler convinced an entire country (two if you count Austria) that the answer to their problems (caused by losing a war) was to start another war and kill all the Jews. And they believed him! Blowing up credit cards companies doesn't seem like much of a leap by comparison.

So yeah, I like Fight Club quite a bit. I like it as art (inserting split second still shots of Tyler Durdan long before we actually meet him= brilliant) and I like the way it explores the darker side of human nature.

Graheim, I know exactly where you're coming from but it's not that the characters in the movie follow Tyler that worries me, it's the idea that people in real life think he's an example to us all and someone to be worshipped.

It's like that South Park where Eric is chastised for dressing up as Hitler and is shown a video of Nuremburg Rallies to teach him the error of his ways (instead his eyes light up with glee).

I'm not that well adjusted but at least I can tell basic right from wrong.

Do people really worship Tyler? C'mon, if he is an example, it's just one of how a person who is completely off his rocker can be amusing and, yes, sad, because peeing in soup at a resturant that you then serve to people is really sick.
Isn't this movie supposed to be funny?

Maybe it's the type of humor that's not your preference??
