TOTALLY OT! You were warned.

So, I had a long and harsh day at work and now I have to go bake chicken but I had this vision and I wanted to share--

Listening to "Natural One" by Folk Implosion. And y'all know I'm creating a whole little fff.net 'verse where everybody is unique and inextricable. And I have this image in my head of all y'all, bitchin' dusters, holsters, badge for Haken, mongoose on leash for Melee, Kaythryn with wild red hair tons of other little details, somebody in a Hawaiian shirt--thinking Saint: walking slo-mo, "Right Stuff" style to this ass-kickin' song.

Okay. Just compelled to share. Cos y'all need to know you're special!

And no, the gin hasn't kicked in.

,
Sarah

Oh god, you made my day once again. I didn't know what song you were talking about so I just downloaded it and now I can't get this stupid grin off my face. That mental picture you painted is too funny.
But, where are you in this Firefly fan‘s ‘verse? I’ve yet to see you pop up in your own stories.

Funny? I could see that, what with the mongoose, but I was really thinking bad-ass, so much so that I kinda got a little teary.

Where am I? Not sure. I had this thought this weekend--an epiphany if you will (and LA, this is the one I don't want to bother you with). But I'm thinking that there might not be room for me in this 'verse. Got to look at y'all with a romantic (literal) gimlet (gin!) eye. If I could, I'd be between Succatash and Maniac, brown coat, American-flag chucks, funny-colored hair, notebook and pen.

But there's probably not a place for me. And that's the point. I've incorporated little bits of me into all the "characters" I'm creating. Maniac isn't the only one among us who has wanted to be a prof. And y'all haven't lived 'til you've taken my Survey of American History Since 1877.

Doubt I'll ever pop up in any actuality. The Browncoat Chronicles are about the amazingness that is the regular posters to this board. I honor y'all. I do. This is a way for me to keep on telling you how special you are to me and to this Browncoat 'verse.

Don’t get me wrong, I get the bad ass part, but my mind just automatically goes the way of laughter. I see us walking in slow motion, the music playing, and a wind whips at the dust, blowing back our brown coats showing pistols slung at our hips. On the sidelines, Joe mindless fans usher their small children in-doors. A few more powerful steps are taken down the street, a wide camera view showing all of the bad ass brown coats in all their glory. Just then my boot catches on a pebble and I fall in slow motion, hitting face first into the dirt. The slow motion effect fades away, and the music screeches to a stop. It could all just end there, but then Melee’s mongoose gets loose and begins to chew on my ear while I’m down. This is why I’ve given up the fan fic writing, and left it up to you who know what you’re doing.

The loud crashing sound of trash cans startle Melee’s mongoose and it stops crewing on my ear. It lets loose a loud squeal and runs from the noise, back into the crowd of Brown coats. Melee runs after it. That’s when the infamous domino effect sets in. Brown coats unaware that the slow motion and music have stopped, keep marching onward. A few go down trying to avoid the screeching mongoose and its chasing owner, others step on my fallen body and slip, and still others try to help Wulf to his feet, and get pulled into the ever growing pile of downed Firefly fans. Brown coat lapels and worn boots are seen in mid air, sharp curses in Chinese can be heard, and a few harmless, stray bullets fly free from jostled pistols. After the dust has settled, and the “Goramm” quieted, the religious fans, and the close followers of Book send a thankful prayer to God. Thank God that the reality show fans all went inside and we were spared the humiliation of falling in front of them. As Wulf is finally pulled from the trash cans, Melee captures and leashes her beloved mongoose, and I am dragged to my feet laughter builds in the crowd. Good thing we are all family. The laughter deepens and grows in volume until a Joe senseless fan dares to peek his head outside a window to see what the commotion is. As if on cue, the music resumes and the slow motion effect restarts. All brown coats whip their heads forward again and continue their bad ass saunter down the street.

Sorry, couldn't help myself. This is a pure and total distraction from my art homework that I’m futilely avoiding.

Dang, y'all make me laugh so hard, I almost fell off my chair. If there's one thing that I look forward to every day, it's the inevitable great posts from great browncoats on FFF.net. I am especially enjoying reading Sarah's fanfics. They make me feel like I'm floating. Hey Sarah, when you said you wanted to be in between Succatash and Maniac you meant that if you were to write a character about yourself, it would fall somewhere in between the character descriptions of succatash and maniac, right? Cause dang girl, that almost sounded dirty when I read it at first, and you're married ain't ya? You always talk about your hubby being next to you at his desk. Not that I don't think you kick the biggest ass of anyone around, and are dang sweet to boot, but I don't know if I can let a comment like that go by without saying something, can I?

The quiet clatter of boots on pavement, the muted jingle of spurs and gun-belts fill the now empty streets. Browncoats appear out of alleys and darkened nooks, joining the throng. A quiet voice, a velvet, husky woman's voice, begins to chant.
"Sar - ah"
Boots strike the pavement, left, right.
"Sar -ah"
Other voices take up the chant, more boots find the rythm. Left, right.
"SAR - AH"
Soon, the chant is echoing through streets, spreading panic and fear...except for one.
"SAR - AH!" Left, right. "SAR - AH!"

Technically you could, but I know you wouldn't.

When I said between I was think Succatash on my left, Maniac on my right, everybody in stride to that heavy bass.

But if you want to think censored things, you go right ahead. Far be it from me to stop you.

And yeah, I'm married. But he's .... He's great, but often doesn't get it. Last night, watching Objects in Space he said, "Uh, did they ever think a way of getting Early off the ship would be to just let Book's hair lose?" I said, "Hush." He said, "I mean, it scared Zoe! You know it's powerful stuff." I said, "Hush. Seriously."

I understand. I see this too, unfortunately, the whole Monsters, Inc. outtakes scene strikes me as a little more realistic, but this is your epiphany, so go right ahead.

Girl, we are lovin' ya right back. The funny part of this whole thing is that while you think there is no room for you in this particular 'verse, you are all around us. You are like the little man behind the curtain in Oz, but so much more than that. If you were to be a character, you would be Serenity, this presence so big that it can't be encompassed as easily as someone like me (even if I AM an all knowing, never seen Angel-type )

You keep us together, and you take us where we need to go. You take us to these places that we wish we could get to on our own, and you keep us together as a family.

*Sniff, sniff* Girl, I am only echoing what everyone else is saying: I look forward to what you give us, and it is a great gift indeed!

Edited to say: MY off topic blurb:

I work for a company made up of mostly asian people. I was taking the lunch order today and said," Anybody got a hankerin' for sometin'?" And got a room of blank stares! I had to apologize and ask if anybody wanted something in particular for lunch! Sometimes I forget that these people don't understand all of the normal slang that goes on, let alone the old western slang that I've started using more!

Soon, the chant is echoing through the streets, spreading panic and fear...except for one.
"SAR - AH!" Left, right. "SAR - AH!"
She stands at a cusp, knowing a decision will have to be made. Her smile tells us which way her heart wants to go...

The city itself seems to weep in fear. A light, misting rain haloes the streetlamps, paints the streets with silver. Bootheels thunder in rhythm to the cadence:
"SAR - AH!"
Left, right.
"SAR - AH!"
Left, right.
A trail of dead attackers and insulters litter the path of the browncoats. Other folks are beginning to line the streets now, though. The curious, the lost, the seekers, hearing something echo in their souls with the cadence:
"SAR - AH!"
Left, right.
"SAR - AH!"
Left, right.
It's not far to their destination, and the browncoats know, can feel it. Somehow, the volume grows. Windows rattle, dogs howl, and some folks cover their ears...but stand and watch the sight. Freedom incarnate, the browncoats march.

Ahead, obscured by mist, a figure stands in the middle of the street. The chant wavers, loses itself in the rain. Fingers slip hammer loops, and unsnap holster flaps. Wide hat, dark clothes beneath a long duster, the man waits patiently in their path. Someone in the front catches the glitter of brass on the man's chest.

"I'll be damned, it's Haken," blurts out Succatash.

Maniac throws up his arm, fist clenched. The browncoats behind him slow and stop, spreading from curb to curb to see what has delayed them.

"Go on," says Maniac, "we'll wait here."

With a nod, Succatash tramps forward. By reflex, he pulls out his pack, and shakes a cigarette from it. Before he can light it, it is soaked. With a rueful chuckle, he drops the useless smoke and repockets the pack. Another few steps, and the two men face each other. The badge on Haken's chest glitters in the failing light. The browncoats behind Succatash are silent, watching, listening.

"Every breath," mutters Haken, and puts out his hand.
"Hallelueh," breathes Succatash, and warmly shakes hands. "What...?"
Haken raises his finger in a gesture for silence. Succatash nods. Up the street behind Haken another form seems barely visible: a dark horse with a pale, cloaked rider. Succatash squints, wondering if it might be...
His wondering is interrupted by Haken's cellphone ringing. Haken holds it out to Succatash as it rings again. Taking it, Succatash waits for the third ring.

"Ni hao."
"Ni hao, browncoat. Succatash, she ain't ready."
"But..."
"I'm sorry, but that's how it stands. She just ain't ready."
"Well hell. Any idea when she might be ready?"
"Even I don't know that one," she says, and laughs. "There will be signs and portents; we'll know when the time is right for her. Meanwhile, keep flying."
"Xie xie," he says, and hands the phone back to Haken. The two men shake hands again, dark lawman and worn browncoat. Succatash looks up the street, trying to make out the figure on horseback. The pale figure raises an arm in salute, then wheels her mount and rides away, cloak spreading behind like ... wings.

Maniac eyes the returning Succatash, questioning with a raised eyebrow. Succatash shrugs and waves his hand for attention.
"Browncoats, lissen up. What we done tonite we done good, but now it's over...for now. Angel says Sarah ain't ready yet, so we'll hafta carry on like we have 'til she is." Murmers of protest and chinese curses come and go. "Now, ya'll know we can't be out on these streets too much after dark, so let's get back to our business."
The voice that started the chant speaks out again.
"Then, a cheer before we go! For Sarah!"
The browncoats thunder out three times, "Hip! Hip! Horay!"

They fade into the rainy twilight by two's and three's, until only Succatash and Maniac remain.
"Well, where to now?" asks Maniac, pulling up his collar against the increasingly insistent rain.
"Don't matter. LostAngel will know."
The two men amble into the night.

It's an old expression: It warms the cockles of my heart.

The line that's rolling around in your head probably got snagged on a protruding neuron and has been hiding out since grade school. It's a St. Patty's day song about Molly Malone. I forget most of it, but she's a fish seller that sings cockles (shellfish) and mussels, alive alive-o. I think she's waiting for her true love to come back from sea.

For the rest a y'all:

Let's see how far we can get our Browncoats marching!

The browncoats go marching five by five,
hurrah, hurrah
The browncoats go marching five by five,
hurrah, hurrah
The browncoats go marching five by five,
To let them know we're still alive,
And we all go marching down into the streets
To hold our ground.

The browncoats go marching six by six,
hurrah, hurrah
The browncoats go marching six by six,
hurrah, hurrah
The browncoats go marching six by six,
So you know who to call when you're in a fix,
And we all go marching down into the streets
To hold our ground.

Comic stories, valiant tales, marching music, little laughter, poetry, cheers, and...cockles? What is going on with this crazy thread???

This thread is the most beautiful thread in the world.

This thread is your thread, this thread is my thread,
From the Canton planet, to the Arial moon,
To the land of Patience, to the Reaver borders,
this thread is made for you and me

Has YOUR mom seen Firefly, lately?

We've all lost our minds. This thread has single handedly caused us to lose our minds.
I blame it on the poems and songs...and the cockle. Wait, isn't that a bird?

Oh, come on. We all know it's space monkeys. A small group of tiny ninja space monkeys. With nunchucks. Whoa, that'd be a bit creepifyin.

Me too. And I accept partial responsibility what with starting the thread and all. I started it as a compliment! Then y'all start talking about cockles and some people are obviously too drunk to use the dictionary....

Lovin' y'all,

I'm thinking that technically it should be "Canton Moon" and "Arial Planet" instead of visa vera, but I'm not sure. Any help here?

Has YOUR mom written a jingle about Firefly, lately?

You're right, it goes the other way around. Canton's a Moon and Arial is a core Planet. Great song either way.

This thread is my thread...

*too tired to think up any more words, so pulls out a lighter and holds is up while humming and "lala"ing the rest of the tune over and over again, accompanied, as always, by the squeeks of her mongoose*

Enough! There will be one mongoose and one mongoose keeper. And she will be called Melee. And Sarahetc looked and said it was good.

Thus spake Sarah, on her way out the door for fajitas.

Can I have a mascot too? *gives BIG puppy dog eyes*

Being the hub of a massively complex intelligence system gets lonely!

How were the fajitas?

BTW, I know that a mascot won't work here. Mascots don't translate well over cell phones.
