I mean, I think Joss Whedon may have a good sense of dialogue but that song is awful.
Can anyone tell me where in the show the movie takes place? Is it just a remake of the episode Serenity or does it start after Rivers and the Doctor have joined the crew?

I suppose that's a matter of opinion. I loved the theme song the first time I heard it. I think it really sets up the key things that make Firefly different from most sci-fi. Sorry to hear you didn't like it.

Bloody hell (she said in terribly Birtish fashion) but damn me if I don't love, I mean postively want to do the old fashioned marriage and babies thing with, the Firefly theme song!!!

I think "Once More With Feeling" certainly established Mr Whedon's credentials as a damn fine humourous song writer (a la Tom Lehrer (sp?)(see footnote 1)) but I like to think the FF theme tune is a little bit more grown up, a bit more Loudon Wainwright III ....

I think we dedicated Browncoats have grown to love the song, but let's be honest - it's not going to appeal to everyone. Having said that, I'd hate to think anyont would be shallow enough to stop watching a show just because of the theme tune!

What's more pertinent perhaps, as raised in one of the essays in "Finding Serenity" is that Joss was taking a risk creating a western when there's little interest in those anymore.

And yes - Once More With Feeling is sheer genius. Was travelling to London at the weekend and ended up listening to it three times in a row! Never get tired of it - there's the comedy element referred to above but also those beautiful songs sung by Tara & Giles. The latter in particular just gets me everytime.

Oh, to get back to one of the original queries - no it's not a rehash of Serenity. It takes place after the events of the series.

I think they should do a "Sing Along A Once More With Feeling" at the Prince Charles behind Leicester Square like they did with the Sound of Mucus and Rocky Horror - I'd go!!

I think you might have Firefly confuse with Enterprise. Firefly is the one with the GOOD theme song and Enterprise is the one with BAD theme song.

Both classics!

Never heard the Enterprise theme tune so can't comment. But I'm still prepared to concede that many people won't like the Firefly theme tune. Doesn't make them bad people (well, not too bad) and as I said above, I certainly hope they wouldn't avoid the show just because of it. But it's clearly not going to be to everyone's tastes.

When I say I like the Firefly song, I should probably also point out that I'm a big Country fan, so I'm inclined in that direction anyway.

Speaking from experience, there are lots of shows with credit sequences I don't like: I use that time to get a snack rather than choosing not to watch the show, which is just silly.

Can't remember what it is right now, but there was a show in the past few years that had an opening sequence that I hated so much it would actually make me a little queasy. So I just recorded it every week so I could have the satisfaction of fast-forwarding through it. Lemons into lemonade!

And from someone who greatly dislikes Country music, I have to say that I sometimes find myself humming the Firefly theme song (and singing when no one can hear), I didn't choose the name Quietude for nothing, although it was in the Thesaurus for another word for Serenity.

As for people who do and don't like something, even Inara voted for the Alliance.

Take me where I can not stand (the bar after several pints, especially on Re-Unification Day).

I was going to mention the Enterprise theme song, but everybody has gotten there before me. But here is one question my ears cannot answer in regards to it, there is one line that sounds like 'No one's going to bend or rape me', kind of Nirvana, but I must be hearing it wrong. Its likely 'break' instead of 'rape' so the singer needs to take some enunciation lessons from Sean Maher.

I'll admit I didn't really care for the theme song in the beginging, but now I adore it. I really like the ending credits where it's just insturmental.

I recently saw a fan vid where someone set the trailer to the theme. I thought it was wonderful. When I first saw the trailer I didn't hink it had the "Firefly" feel to it. After it was put to the theme music it was a spittin' image of the series. It's amazing what music can do.

For example, do you really think Jaws would have been as cool w/out the music? How about Psycho? I haven't seen the BDM yet, but I really hope the soundtrack has that same gritty western feel to it.

I'm another one that didn't like the theme song right off that bat (I don't like country, either) but it's grown on me and now I find myself singing it all the time. I make up my own words. I think for me, it just became part of the whole Firefly experience, rather than just the westerny theme song.

And I'm SO glad someone brought up Enterprise before me, because I CANNOT stand that song, and it may be one of the reasons I stopped watching the show (that and it wasn't holding my attention.)

I didn't really like the theme song the first time or two I heard it... in my case, it wasn't until I had a 'feel' for the 'verse, and what Mal had gone through, that the song really connected.

Of course, if I didn't watch a show just because the theme song sucked, I would've turned Wonderfalls off 15 seconds in. Damn, that chorus is annoying as hell.

I really didn't like the theme song much myself when I first heard it. It took a while for me to accept it. That's the same for the whole show though.

I also have converted friends who still think the theme song is ridiculously stupid. They like the show though. So, I consider that acceptable.

Then again, I also am the type of person who won't go see cinderella man because of how terrible that title sounds. They might as well have called it fairy, girlie, fancypants man.

I thoroughly enjoyed the theme song, but it does have it's own taste. This song was specifically written to be kinda otherworldly or allworldly, I think you know what I mean. Anyhoo, I HOPE people wouldn't turn off a show just because of the theme music. I do know that my mom only started watching Third Watch (great show) because as she was flipping through stations their theme song caught her ear. I don't think that would work the other way around. Look at Family Guy's theme song. I'm sick of hearing it! But I really don't think I'd stop watching the show because of it. That's just silly.

I'm sure you meant to say "that song is awful, IMO" right? Not everyone is of the same opinion, let's remember. And they're not afraid to tell you either, as you may have noticed

I'll admit, the theme put me off for a bit, due to the genetic aversion I have to country western music. I took it as such at first, then realized it actually has a blue grass tempo to it. I've grown to appreciate blue grass in recent years, which I probably should, since it has Scottish roots, same as I do.

Forgetting the tune for a moment, consider the lyrics. Even hating the tune, the words are very Firefly.

Not to mention, it has considerably less verses than "Hero of Canton" which makes the theme WAY easier to sing in the shower.

I don't like most of the Country music out there--but Southern Rock like "The Ballad of Serenity" is good.

BTW, does anyone know anything about Sonny Rhodes? What else has he done? Also, who is his fiddler? I think the fiddling really makes that song.

It probably helped that I watched O Brother Where Art Thou before I saw Firefly. If you get a chance, see that movie.

As much as I love the theme song after coming to understand it, (and peripherally before that, because you dont hear many lyric songs these days) i just want to disagree about the enterprise theme.

I actually liked the enterprise theme song, from the first time i heard it on the pilot, it's just a nice song. Imho, the problem is the show REALLY (really!!!!) didn't do it justice. The show seems like it was designed around the song, pigheaded idealism and all. Still, it's a nice song, imo.

Now, would I have liked the music outside of the context of the movie? Not so much. But it was so perfect in the movie. And plus, I've read the Odyssey, so it was a hoot for me, comparing the two.

Every time I watch an episode, the theme song makes me feel like the world is a little bit brighter. For someone struggling with "issues" I find the theme to be inspirational. I hope I find serenity soon.

And if you disagree, you're obviously unpatriotic to your country, you hate children, you eat puppies, and should be sterilized!!!!!

Actually, I happen to love the theme song, but I SUPPOSED I can understand that the style may not be everyone's favorite. Although, lyric wise, it's entirely perfect as a sort of backstory bit.

Hit the nail on the head! I felt I recognized the storyline but couldn't place it until I bought the CD and read the booklet. And like Firefly, when the music is in context to the movie....perfection!

I too would be upset if the Ballad of Serenity is not in the movie.

Hit the nail on the head! I felt I recognized the storyline but couldn't place it until I bought the CD and read the booklet. And like Firefly, when the music is in context to the movie....perfection!

I really wish they'd come out with a Firefly CD because the music really is superb.

I respectfully disagree with you about the theme song being "terrible". as for when Serenity takes place, it's about eight months after "The Message" which was the final episode of the series, it remained unaired until Sci-Fi re-aired the episodes before the movie. River and Simon have been with the crew since the begining of the series!

anyway to answer the first post..That theme song is awsome. Joss actually wrote it before he wrote the first episode.. and yes the movie does take place during the series, right in the middle of it..you can tell because wash and sheperd book are there the whole time. (sarcasm) :)

I love the Firefly theme song, or Mals' song. There is another version of that song floating around the internet. This girl with a beautiful scottish or irish sounding voice sings it, and it is the most beautiful song you ever heard

Oh hell yes.

If they didn't (barely) balance out the dodgy with the hearttuggingly historical "spirit of human exploration" video (both real and CGI), it would just be crap-on-a-stick.

It was the ONE Trek series theme that FAILED to move me as much as the orchestral tones of TNG/DS9/VOYAGER. Now THOSE are sci-fi themes to remember. Hell, even Trek TOS had a better theme, and IT sounded like a yodelling "happy"! XD

Joss' "Ballad of Serenity" theme was the FIRST sung sci-fi theme I haven't WINCED at!

And these days, the audiences are more fickle, maybe spoiled by themes of old?

Hell, Jerry Goldsmith made most of the Trek ones! The man (WAS, sadly) a genius!
He came up with the rare musical genius that inspires entirely ORIGINAL themes that are finally emerging again today, like the new Battlestar Galactica and Farscape themes - odd to the ear to begin with, but still amazing and stirringly original, and MEMORABLE!
(Who doesn't get shivers as the choir dies down slightly and the drums kick in in Battlestar? ANY originality is remembered in ANY good project. Even spreading to non-TV/Movie media such as PC games - Deus Ex anyone?)

Noone hears one of those themes and goes "was that show A? Or show B?", unlike, say, Superman and Star Wars for example. I go to hum Superman, and I switch half way to Star Wars by accident!

Anyway, to conclude, themes are good backups to reinforce the show's memorability, but in the end, it's the SHOW that defines itself, not two minutes of credits' music.

just wanna double check... in the film Mal makes a comment to Simon; "eight months you've had her on my ship, knowing full well she could go monkey-shit..."

so i'm assuming 8 months from day 1, pilot episode when Simon waltzes onto Serenity with River in a box....
